I don't usually give recommendations, but...

For serious use look at gigabit cards.  They work at 10/100 and are now
inexpensive enough to make standard in deployments.  Their only drawbacks
are that they still suck power, and do not support Wake-On-LAN (WOL) and
IPMI management. 

The next step down are the 3Com and Intel 10/100 cards that include a
boot Flash ROM.  Both do WOL and PXE network boot, and avoid the hassle
of finding the right Flash chip to put on a board with an empty socket.

At the low end ($10), look for a ADMtek Comet board on sale.
