Here's what I did:

0.  Ensure that /etc/syslog.conf sets kernel.* to /dev/console

1.  Reboot (note that my inittab is set to default runlevel 3, so XWin
doesn't load).

2.  mii-diag eth1 --msg-level 0xffffffff (that's 8 f's)

I got the normal output (as seen earlier in this thread) from that.

3.  Unplug ethernet cable.

4.  Reboot

5.  Verify that the messages given earlier are present in /var/log
messages (they are).

6.  mii-diag eth1 --msg-level 0xffffffff (again, 8 f's) (again, normal
output)

7.  Plug in ethernet cable.

I didn't see anything displayed to the console (of course, the machine
didn't lock up either).

Did this prove/disprove anything (can you tell I'm lost?)?
