woah -- this is bizarre.  the box is a router, and it seems to route
packets a lot faster than it handles local TCP sessions.

using a host on wlan0 to wget a file from a host on eth0 i can achieve
>600kbyte/s.

but when i run wget on the router itself the rate is only 20kbyte/s.
