How does your ifconfig-output look like?

It should list a couple of extra devices, where the vlan-id is added as a
eth(n).<vlanid>.

I don't have a linux-box running vlan's but on FreeBSD (well, a Juniper M40,
actually, but that doesn't make any difference) it looks like this:

ge-0/1/0.9:     flags=0x8000 <UP|MULTICAST>
        inet local=213.239.154.1 dest=213.239.154.0/26 bcast=213.239.154.63
ge-0/1/0.14:    flags=0x8000 <UP|MULTICAST>
        inet local=213.239.157.1 dest=213.239.157.0/24 bcast=213.239.157.255
        inet6 local=2001:9a8:1205:21::1 dest=2001:9a8:1205:21::/64
            local=2001:9a8:1205:22::1 dest=2001:9a8:1205:22::/64
            local=2001:9a8:1205:25::1 dest=2001:9a8:1205:25::/64

Your vlan-devices should look like eth0.17 for vlan-id 17 on eth0.

http://www.candelatech.com/~greear/vlan.html#setup gives detailed
installation instructions. Did you follow them? (Just checking)
