I am using Linux 2.4.20 (SuSE) on an old IBM 760EL labtop. The LAN support is not stable, as soon as I access a file larger than 3Kbyte i get a number of timeout's. I have changed to the newest driver I could find (3c59x.c:v0.99Y 12/16/2002) but this have not solved my problem. The system gets more stable, but slower, if I change from the MTU size 1500 to 100. I also tried to use 10 Mbit instead of 100 Mbit but this did not make any change. Here is a trace from an FTP session where I try to put a file of size 4891 Bytes from W2K to Linux. I use the PCMCIA_SYSTEM setting of "external", "kernel" could not assign a valid irq. I have no problems with the PCMCIA card when running WIN98. Any suggestions are very much appriciated. I have used this problem to learn something about the art of network driver programming and I have tried to make different settings af variables (timeout value, ring sizes) but the change of the MTU size is actually what has given the "best" result, but not enough.
