What driver version did you try?

0.99Y.

   What is the detection message?

Jun 17 14:57:54 osiris kernel: 3c59x.c:v0.99Y 12/16/2002 Donald Becker, [email protected]
Jun 17 14:57:54 osiris kernel: http://www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html
Jun 17 14:57:54 osiris kernel: eth0: 3Com 3c1556B-5 mini-PCI at 0xe800, 00:04:76:4d:d7:b8, IRQ 10
Jun 17 14:57:54 osiris kernel: 8K buffer 5:3 Rx:Tx split, MII interface.
Jun 17 14:57:54 osiris kernel: MII transceiver found at address 0, status 786d.
Jun 17 14:57:54 osiris kernel: Using bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives.

So the driver correctly identifies the card -- no change in PCI ID.

Oh, this is interesting. Having booted with the modified kernel driver, I
switched to your driver to get the detection message, and it works now. So
it appears that there's still some subtlety about getting the card into the
right state -- which the kernel driver might even be doing accidentally.

I enclose `vortex-diag' output that reflects the current state (booted with
modified kernel driver, switched to yours). I do see differences from the
second `vortex-diag' dump in my previous message, but I don't know which
ones might be significant.
