It works on 2.6.11? fr1 in particular is untested by me on fr1. I got
the impression that I should lock very carefully at the locks!

Well, that certainly sounds like a locking problem.

I'd try using raid1 instead, so as to confirm/deny that the problem is
in the fr1 layer.
