Hi!! We are using SuSE9.3 successfully diskless over nbd (in some other setup with squashfs). The setup is done of course in the initrd. That initrd is written by a modified version of the SuSE10.0 mkinitrd tool (rather nasty shell script for generating InitRDs). I could post that, but do not know if that might be of any use ... We are working with special kernel command line options for triggering nbd use like: nbdserver=IP:NBD-Port,type_of_fs ...
