Settings need restoring after reboot - not persistent

I have successfully installed EVMS 2.5.5 on Centos 4.4 (kernel
2.6.9-42.0.3.EL).

I had to install some -devel packages to get evmsgui going (glib, gtk
and ncurses).

I did:
patch of all current patches for 2.5.5 engine
./configure
make
make install
ldconfig

I did not touch the kernel (prefer not to for simplicity and ease of
future upgrade and instead to use the workaround of using the kernel's
drivers for the boot HD and EVMS for my RAID data disks).

I excluded hda in sysfs_devices in /etc/evms.conf (so it booted
without a problem).

I did the following:
Run evmsgui
Delete volumes hde & hdg
Actions - create - region - RAID 1 hde & hdg
Actions - create - volume md0 from RAID
Actions - File Systems - Make - Ext2/3 - name md0_vol
Save
Backup
Mounted md0
Add mount /dev/evms/md0 to fstab

I could successfully add files to md0 and waited for the resync to
complete.

/proc/mdstat indicated no problems.

When I reboot I cannot see my RAID. /proc/mdstat provides no details.
Mount /mnt/md0 fails

I have to run evms_metadata_restore to recover and be able to mount
them with mount /mnt/md0.

What have I done wrong/missed?

There was a message flashed up on re-boot about md0 (still in use?)
but nothing in /var/log/boot.log
