One volume (EVMS term; Logical Volume in LVM terms) did get corrupted,
so much so that after an hour on reboot fsck was still spitting out
errors.  I booted to a rescue disk and repaired; seemingly things are OK
now.  /var was the volume, and the only problems I saw reported were in
cache (but other stuff may have scrolled off the screen).  The file
system was Reiser 3.  I don't know how or when the corruption happened.

While in the repair environment, after having done
mount --bind /dev /target/dev
and similarly for proc and sys, some volumes I mounted ro showed up as
ro in the outer environment but rw when I did chroot.

evms-debug is a terrific tool.  As a wild guess, evmsn uses a curses
interface I suppose, and maybe that leaves the non-standard busy box
terminal in a weird state.  I tried "reset" and some other tty
changing/setting commends, but they didn't help.  I also launched emacs
and ran a shell inside it; there too the screen handling was messed up.
