Run X using the 'vesa' driver. Look at /var/log/X*.0.log. It should contain a list of modes that the BIOS supports. Pick the one you want, and take down the mode id (the mode id is a 2 digit hexadecimal number). Add 0x200 to the mode id and use that in your vga= line.
