2.5.68-mm2 & Mach64 on Inspiron 3700 laptop (LCD)

Well, finally with 2.5.68-mm2 (RedHat 9 base distro), I compiled "atyfb" as a module and was able to modprobe it successfully without completely losing my screen.  After modprobing, I have to switch to another virtual console and just see a cursor.  Logging in returns the text to the screen and /proc/fb shows that fb0 is working.  However, trying to change to 1024x768-60 results in the completely blank screen.  I have tried adapting modelines from XF86 and the end result is the same.  I have to reboot to get my LCD screen back.  Any ideas on where to go from here?  What other info should I provide to correctly diagnose this problem?
