setfacl problem

i can do the getfacl comand, with no problem;
i can do the setfacl comand,  just to the owner.
ex.:
i can do:              sefacl -m u::rw- arq

but

when I do:
              setfacl -m u:joao:rw- arq
I get this error:
              setfacl: arq: Operação não suportada(not suported operation)



why???

kernel: 2.6.10
File System: ext3 with acl suport.
