[004] - Backup Manager 0.5.8b
by Alexis SUKRIEH (http://freshmeat.net/users/sukria/)
Sat, Jul 9th 2005 11:59
About: Backup Manager is a small and basic tool for generating archives.
It is designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for making
tarballs. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz, and zip archives. It can be run
in a parallel mode with different configuration files. Archives are kept
for a given number of days. Its upload system can use ftp or scp to
transfer the generated archives to a list of remote hosts. The
configuration file is very simple and basic.
Changes: This release provides two security fixes. First, all generated
temp files are handled by mktemp. Second, the archive repository can be
readable and writable by a specific user and group instead of being world
accessible. Moreover, the configuration file is now validated before using
it, triggering warnings if mistakes are encountered. The code has also been
cleaned a bit and the French translation was updated.

[006] - Bulletin Board News Server .10
by Alexander Oelzant (http://freshmeat.net/users/aoe/)
Sat, Jul 9th 2005 13:30
Communications :: Usenet News
Internet
About: Bulletin Board News Server is a (relatively) quick NNTP interface
for vBulletin. It reads directly from the MySQL DB and is therefore
independent of the Web frontend. It doesn't alter read counters, but
"forbidden names", name size limitations, user authentication, and
anonymous posting (through a "usenet" user) are implemented. Registered
users (either in the vboard or through a proprietary pw hash in the config
file) can see the email addresses of others, as far as the owners permit
it.
Changes: A mode to feed NNTP (via ihave) to a Newsserver is now supported,
thus eliminating the need to stay connected to the client and speak the
entire NNTP protocol itself. The drawbacks to this method are a need for a
standalone newsserver and the fact that it only works with vb 3.x.

Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games
About: Concede is a computer version of the board game "Take It Easy". The
game is a kind of mix between 4-in-a-row and bingo (a.k.a. lotto). The
player starts with an empty board where 19 hexagonal tiles have to be
placed. At each turn, a random tile is drawn and the player must put it
somewhere on the board. Each tile is marked with 3 numbers (from 1 to 9)
and the player must try to make as many complete rows as possible with the
tiles he gets. The problem is that there are more tiles in the game than
places on the board, and they come in random order.

Sat, Jul 9th 2005 22:11
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Speech
About: eXtace is a visual sound display/analysis program. It requires
Esound (esd) for its audio source. It includes various fast fourier
transforms of the audio data in realtime. Its displays include a 3D
wireframe flying landscape, a 3D textured flying landscape, a 16-256
channel graphic EQ, three types of scopes, a 3D "spike" flying landscape,
and two forms of spectragrams. The 3D traces can be picked up,
manipulated, and displayed at nearly any angle. eXtace also features a 3D
direction control widget for controlling the angle and speed at which the
trace runs away and a gradient/colormap editor for changing the colormap
to suit your needs. No OpenGL is required.
Changes: Cosmetic improvements were made to the Options panel. FFTW-3.x
support was added. eXtace will detect the presence of FFTW-2.x or 3.x
during compilation and select the best version. (FFTW-3.x is recommended,
as FFTW-2.x can cause an eXtace crash when switching FFT sizes.) Scope
zooming is supported to allow zooming in or out of the trace in the time

Sat, Jul 9th 2005 22:57
Desktop Environment :: File Managers
About: Jfilerunner is a file manager for Unix systems. It features file

Web via HTTP. There are multi- threaded file and GUI operations, and the
ability to change the Look And Feel dynamically.
Changes: An additional version is available that uses the NiceSTEP classes
