[001] - ACE 1.4a-pl2 (OCI)
 by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 23:35

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that can help you develop and deploy high-performance
software systems faster and better. ACE is especially useful for systems
that use network and/or inter-process communications and that take
advantage of multithreading. While the ACE source code is free, that's not
the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's wrappers and higher-level
patterns help you develop your software quickly and portably, helping you
to complete your projects on time and within budget.

Changes: Optional support for IDL types that use TAO's Data Distribution
Service (DDS) was added. Bugs in BiDirectional GIOP were fixed. Bugfixes
were made for the VxWorks port. Support was added for SunCC 5.6 and Visual
C++ 8. Support for UTF-32, UTF-16, and UTF-8 was fixed. Fixes were made for
endpoint routines. Support for strings of strings was added. Deadlocks and
event, servant, and thread leaks in the Notification Service were fixed.
Other minor speedups and bugfixes were made.

[002] - Ampache 3.3.2-Alpha1 (Development)
 by Karl Vollmer (http://freshmeat.net/users/vollmerk/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 04:17

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Ampache is a Web-based MP3/Ogg/RM/Flac/WMA/M4A manager. It allows
you to view, edit, and play your audio files via HTTP/IceCast/Mpd or
Moosic. It has support for downsampling, playlists, artist, and album
views, album art, random play, song play tracking, user themes, and remote
catalogs using XML-RPC.

Changes: This release contained some major database cleanups that should
make future development easier. A vastly improved MPD interface was
included. Norwegian and Spanish translations were added and all XML-RPC
functions were improved to allow for XML-RPC session validation and remote
catalogs of over 10000 songs.

[003] - Apache2GDL 1.0
 by Schwalex (http://freshmeat.net/users/Schwalex/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 06:43

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Apache2GDL is a Perl script that parses an Apache log file and
generates a directed graph of visitors' movement in GDL format for
visualization with aiSee. It also allows you to pipe the graph directly
through aiSee and get a mapped SVG or PNG image of the layout. The
generated images help you find out how people actually browse your site --
which paths they take to get from page A to page B, which paths are more
popular than others, which pages get the most hits, and whether there are
one-way paths and dead-end pages.

Changes: This release does a better job at distinguishing actual visitors
from search engine spiders. Minor bugs and glitches have been fixed.
Referrer URLs containing unmasked spaces no longer cause invalid GDL
specifications to be produced. Edge thicknesses and arrow sizes now much
better reflect visitor movements between pages. The code has been cleaned
up to allow easier customization. Lastly, the output GDL files are now
smaller, yet better indented.

[006] - BashDiff 1.23
 by William Park (http://freshmeat.net/users/opengeometry/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 11:34

Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Shells

About: Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash that incorporates many useful
features from Awk, Python, Zsh, Ksh, and others. In the main core, it adds
the following: new brace expansion {a..b}, new parameter expansion
${var|...}, new command substitution $(=...), extended for, while, and
until loops, extended case statement, new try-block with integer
exception, and new here document <&lt+. As builtin commands, it adds the
following: sscanf(3), <string.h>, and <ctype.h> wrappers, a variety of
array and regex(3) operations, GDBM, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL
database interfaces, an HTML template engine (BASP), stack/queue
operations on positional parameters and arrays, Expat XML parser
interface, simple x-y character plot, DOS line support, and simple Awk
emulation. For GUI dialogs or layout, it adds a GTK+2 interface.

Changes: This release adds a shell interface to GTK+2 widget library, for
building a simple GUI dialog or layout. It uses XML syntax for layout, and
returns the user's selection in a shell variable or runs a shell command as
callback. The name of the 'xml' builtin has been changed to 'expat'. The
<<+ here document now removes space and tab indents.

[007] - C++ ResourcePool 0.99.11
 by mws (http://freshmeat.net/users/mws/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 06:37

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries

About: C++ ResourcePool is a library which can be used to pool resources
of every kind. It can also be used as an abstraction layer by providing a
unique API for different resources of similar resource types; the most
prominent examples are SQL databases. It includes a convenient way to
access MySQL and Oracle databases in the same way, so that changing from
MySQL to Oracle or vice-versa does not need big code changes.

Changes: This release focuses on portability (GCC 4.0 series
compatibility) as well as code cleanup in the multi-threading code. The
multi-threading features of ResourcePool were present from the 1st release
but are not yet documented.

 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 16:31

Desktop Environment :: File Managers
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Capivara is an application to manage and synchronize files and
directories on either local or remote computers. FTP/SFTP are supported to
access remote servers. Additionally, Capivara can also serve as a file
manager with all features that the java.io package supports.

Changes: This release supports synchronizing files by comparing MD5 and
SHA-1 hash values. The plugin for the Windows filesystem has been updated
to compare timestamps of files on FAT and NTFS even when the resolution of
the actual timestamps are different. Several worker threads have been
revised so that exceptions are not quietly consumed. New GUI elements,
like a status panel while deleting files, make the new version more
user-friendly.

Utilities

About: ClamShell gives you an easy graphical tool for running the clamscan
anti-virus command line engine. It has built-in reporting of both the scan
activity as well as any virus activity found, customization options, and
virus definition updating.

Changes: This release resolves an issue where freshclam would not run and
update the virus definition DB if it was started from a link or command
line. To resolve this issue, ClamShell needs to be run with root
privileges. This functionality has been added to ClamShell's config, and

[013] - drm_tools 1.1.0
 by mathog (http://freshmeat.net/users/mathog/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 22:49

About: drm_tools contains several small utilities: accudate, datasniffer,
execinput, extract, mdump, and msgqueue. accudate is a date replacement
with subsecond accuracy. execinput executes commands one at a time from
stdin. extract extracts and then emits column/token fields. datasniffer
and mdump format binary data files. msgqueue provides command line control
of message queues.

Changes: Datasniffer, another data dumping program, was added. A link was
provided from the home page to Windows binaries of all but msgqueue and
accudate, which are rather specific to Unix/Linux.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Editors
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: EasyTAG is a utility for viewing and editing tags for MP3, MP2,
FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, MusePack, and Monkey's Audio files. It features a simple
and attractive GTK+ interface.

Changes: This release adds the ability to identify the picture type (front
or back cover) when adding it to the ID3 tag. A lot of bugs were fixed,
including the saving of a new path in the browser entry, a problem on Ogg
Vorbis and FLAC files where the TRACKTOTAL field was saved several times,
a problem when loading a picture with a file name containing characters
not in UTF-8, and a problem with strings that didn't appear translated.

 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 06:51

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: EncFS is an encrypted pass-through filesystem which runs in
userspace on Linux (using the FUSE kernel module). Similar in design to
CFS and other pass-through filesystems, all data is encrypted and stored
in the underlying filesystem. Unlike loopback filesystems, there is no
predetermined or pre-allocated filesystem size.

Changes: A problem which sometimes prevented a directory from being
renamed if it contained symbolic links was fixed. A symbolic link to "/"
is now allowed. OpenSSL hardware acceleration engine support was
initialized. The “cat” command was added to encfsctl, which
can dump the contents of a file without mounting the FS.

Communications :: Conferencing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards

About: FUDforum is templatable forum with i18n support based on PHP and
either MySQL or PostgreSQL. It features a user/group management system, a

 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 09:15

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to
only those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed
through an existing iptables policy.

Changes: fwsnort was completely restructured with respect to how it
creates Netfilter chains. There are no longer any per-interface chains.
Three new chains were added: "FWSNORT_INPUT_ESTAB",
"FWSNORT_OUTPUT_ESTAB", and "FWSNORT_FORWARD_ESTAB" to which TCP
connections in the ESTABLISHED state are jumped. This allows fwsnort to
use the Netfilter TCP connection tracking mechanism to ignore Stick and
Snot style attacks (similar to the flow:established Snort rule option).
True variable resolution was added for the Snort rule header. This
directly emulates the behavior of the Snort IDS.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The GNU Compact Disc Input and Control library encapsulates CD-ROM
reading and control for applications wishing to be oblivious to the OS-
and device-dependent properties of a CD-ROM. It provides an API for access
to SCSI-MMC (multimedia commands) and support for CD image types like
BIN/CUE, cdrdao's TOC, and Nero's NRG, which gives applications using the
library the ability to read disc images as though they were CDs. ISO-9660

About: Libxml2 is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. The
library code is portable (to Linux, Unix, Windows, embedded systems, etc.)
and modular; most of the extensions can be compiled out. Libxml2 implements
a number of existing standards related to markup languages, including the
XML standard, Namespaces in XML, XML Base, Relax NG, RFC 2396, XPath,
XPointer, HTML4, XInclude, SGML Catalogs, and XML Catalogs. In most cases,
libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively strict way. To
some extent, it provides support for the following specifications, but
doesn't claim to implement them: DOM, FTP client, HTTP client, and SAX2.
Support for W3C XML Schemas is in progress. It includes xmllint, a command
line XML validator.

Changes: This release includes a lot of bugfixes and some enhancements
like improvements to XML Schemas conformance, support for XML Schemas
streaming (SAX and Reader), new APIs similar to DOM "import", and better
standalone regression tests.

[045] - mpiBLAST 1.4.0
 by Aaron Darling (http://freshmeat.net/users/darling/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 11:54

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: mpiBLAST is an MPI based parallel implementation of NCBI BLAST. It
consists of a pair of programs that replace formatdb and blastall with
versions that execute BLAST jobs in parallel on a cluster of computers
with MPI installed. There are two primary advantages to using mpiBLAST
versus traditional BLAST. First, mpiBLAST splits the database across each
node in the cluster. Because each node's segment of the database is
smaller it can usually reside in the buffer-cache, yielding a significant
speedup due to the elimination of disk I/O. Second, it allows BLAST users
to take advantage of efficient, low-cost Beowulf clusters because
interprocessor communication demands are low. mpiBLAST achieves
super-linear speedup in situations where the database is too large to fit
into RAM, and near linear speedup in other situations. It does not require
a dedicated cluster.

Changes: This release contains several critical enhancements to mpiBLAST's
performance, scalability, and stability. It has a 305x speedup in searching
the NT database with 128 worker CPUs. The previous fastest release gives
only 180x speedup on the same data set. Other improvements include result
ordering that matches NCBI's blastall, and a variety of bugfixes to
features like database updating and database removal. Support for MPICH 2
has been added. A new program called mpiblast_cleanup removes
mpiblast-related data from each node's filesystem.

 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 06:52

Utilities

About: pkpgcounter parses files and outputs the number of pages needed to
print them. It currently recognizes the following formats: PostScript
(both DSC compliant and binary), PDF, PCL3/4/5, PCLXL (aka PCL6), ESC/P2,
DVI, TIFF, OpenOffice.org Writer, and OpenOffice.org Impress. pkpgcounter
has been part of the PyKota project since 2003, but is now available
separately.

Changes: Support for the OpenOffice.org Writer and OpenOffice.org Impress
document formats was added. The code was reorganized to ease its reuse
from the PyKota print quota software.

 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 17:11

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT

About: Pustefix is a Web application framework that features an
XML/XSLT-based view generation and the usual MVC architecture of the
backend system. The frontend can be built with the help of XSLT templates,
and include parts that contain HTML or XML code that will be transformed to
create the final HTML output. The backend allows for the creation of
reusable handler classes, which can be aggregated into complete pages.
These handlers get their input in the form of real Java objects that are
already assembled and checked against user defined rules by the framework.
Other features include pageflow management avoiding the need to explicitly
code dependencies between pages anywhere, a small built in editor to
conveniently edit the include parts by just clicking on them in the Web
browser, and much more.

[062] - ReleaseForge 0.8.7
 by Phil Schwartz (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_schwartz/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 16:34

About: ReleaseForge is a GUI application designed for project
administrators and release engineers of projects that are hosted at
SourceForge. It is intended to make it easier and faster to create a new
release and edit existing releases rather than using the SourceForge Web
interface. It streamlines the release effort by prompting you for
information regarding your new release (version info, change log, release
notes, files to include, etc). It then seamlessly negotiates with the
SourceForge Web server, creating your release, posting your release
notes/change log, uploading your files to the SourceForge FTP server,
selecting the files for inclusion in your release on the SourceForge Web
server, updating the file attributes of each of the files and then, if
appropriate, notifying monitoring users of the new release.

Changes: This fixes a Freshmeat XML-RPC interface bug. Previous versions
incorrectly passed the "project_name" rather than "short_name" to
Freshmeat.

[064] - Rubber 1.0
 by Emmanuel Beffara (http://freshmeat.net/users/xunam/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 06:47

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: Rubber is a building system for LaTeX documents. It is based on a
routine that runs just as many compilations as necessary. The module
system provides a great flexibility that virtually allows support for any
package with no user intervention, as well as pre- and post-processing of
the document. The standard modules currently provide support for bibtex,
dvips, dvipdfm, pdftex, and makeindex. A good number of standard packages
are supported, including graphics/graphicx (with automatic conversion
between various formats and Metapost compilation).

Changes: Many changes were made in the code's structure. Several new
features were added, including more intelligent rules for graphics
conversion, new command-line options "-W" to report compilation warnings,
"--only" for partial compilation, and "--inplace" and "--into" for
compiling in another directory than that of the source file. Several bugs
were fixed.

 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 04:10

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It saves many
files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program.

Changes: Archiving of sparse files was sped up by 50%. Support for
extracting hard links in the SVr4 cpio CRC archive format was added. A new
-read0 option was added as a counterpart for gfind -print0, which is used
when reading filenames with the list= option. A new pkglist= option was
added as an unstable internal interface for the Schily Source Package
System SPS and is used to create packages for SchilliX. A bug in xheader.c

About: xajax is a PHP class library for easily creating powerful PHP-
driven, Web-based AJAX applications. Developers can use the library to
asynchronously call PHP functions and update the content of your a
Webpage without reloading the page. It is designed to be easy to
implement. To keep the presentation markup relatively clean and avoid
having to create a lot of JavaScript functions to update the Web content,
it allows you to control a great deal of the content through XML responses
from PHP functions.

Changes: Some serious bugs with the UTF-8 support were fixed. You can now
pass single and multidimensional arrays and associative arrays from
JavaScript into xajax-enabled PHP functions. If you pass a JavaScript
object, the PHP function will receive an array of the object's properties.
You can now easily process Form data asynchronously, including complex
input naming that produces multidimensional and associative arrays. xajax
can now work with Smarty templates. A bug with detecting non-standard

[081] - YourKit Java Profiler 4.5-EAP10
 by YourKit Team (http://freshmeat.net/users/YourKitTeam/)
 Mon, Jul 11th 2005 06:58

Software Development

About: YourKit Java Profiler is a CPU and memory profiler that makes it
easy to solve wide range of CPU- and memory-related performance problems.
It features automatic leak detection, powerful tools for the analysis of
memory distribution, an object heap browser, comprehensive memory tests as
part of your JUnit testing process, extremely low profiling overhead,
transparent deobfuscation support, and integration with Eclipse, JBuilder,
IntelliJ IDEA, NetBeans, and JDeveloper IDEs.

Changes: The impact of CPU tracing was significantly reduced because of
using a dynamic byte-code instrumentation approach. Tracing is only
available in Java 5.0 or higher, because older JVMs do not provide
appropriate means for dynamic byte-code instrumentation. All locally
running profiled applications are correctly detected on all supported
platforms. The ability to connect to remote application to a given host
only was added. A "Summary" tab was added to telemetry views. The release
version of Eclipse 3.1 is supported.

About: Zile is a small, fast, and powerful Emacs clone. It is useful for
small footprint installations (e.g. on floppy disk) or quick editing
sessions.

Changes: A fatal bug in macro creation was fixed, and the --funcall
command line flag was re-added.
