[001] - /etc/net Scripts 0.7.9
  by Pilot (http://freshmeat.net/users/infrastation/)

System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command
set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration
framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, usbnet, and
PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be
added without overall design changes.

Changes: This release features initial iptables support.

  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 04:45

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Version Control :: CVS
Software Development :: Version Control :: Subversion

About: Antmod is a build management, release management, and repository
management tool. Its implementation is an Ant-based extensible engine
for retrieving, versioning, building, and deploying code to and from
Subversion or CVS. It standardizes build files for Java projects and
provides build plugins for various tasks. It also standardizes tagging
and branching for both CVS and Subversion, and its module and repository
management can also be used for non-Java projects. It greatly speeds up
Java software development, promotes reuse of Java software, and
standardizes the build-test- release cycle.

Changes: This version features a solid plugin architecture, making it easy
to customize Ant build functionality. New plugins for test coverage and
OSGi have been added. Antmod's build output has been improved to show more
and easier to read build information. Many smaller improvements and
bugfixes have been made. Java 1.5, Ant 1.6.5, and Mac OS X now are now
fully supported.

[005] - bash programmable completion 20050720 (Stable)
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 01:05

System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: The patterns for tarball matching were fixed. Evince completion
for .pdf files was added. More OpenOffice 2 completions were added.
Completion for xine front-ends and kplayer/MPlayer was added.

[010] - bpkg 0.3
  by Alec Thomas (http://freshmeat.net/users/alecthomas/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 00:51

System :: Archiving :: Packaging

About: bpkg is a utility that tries to simplify the process of trying out
new programs from source. For most packages, this can be as simple as
"bpkg <url or tarball>". bpkg will download, extract, configure, compile,
install, generate a package in your system's native format, and finally
integrate that package into your system's packaging system so that you can
remove it cleanly. It has auto-detection for Arch Linux, Slackware, Red
Hat, Gentoo, and SuSE (though not all packaging back-ends are complete).
bpkg is not intended as a replacement for normal packaging utilities.

Changes: Packages in zip files are now handled. An issue with Python
packages was fixed. Slackware install was fixed so that it doesn't extract
checkinstall unless necessary. Package version detection using source file
name or python setup.py file was improved.

[014] - Conary 0.61.4
  by Edward C. Bailey (http://freshmeat.net/users/yeliab/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 11:41

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Fixes to group handling, command line parsing, and
architecture-independent handling of :lib components. The cvc newpkg
command now accepts the --dir option, and complains when given unexpected
arguments (which used to be ignored).

[015] - Crossroads Load Balancer 0.04
  by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 05:09

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking

About: Crossroads is a load balance and failover utility for TCP-based
services. It is a daemon program running in userspace and features
extensive configurability, polling of backends using "wakeup calls",
detailed status reporting, "hooks" for special actions when backend calls
fail, and more. It is service-independent; it is usable for HTTP(S), SSH,
SMTP, DNS, etc.

Changes: This release introduces a new configuration keyword for back
ends: "decay", specifying how fast the estimated load of a back end should
decrease. Furthermore a new flag "-u" is introduced, to switch back the
daemon to a non-root user ID. Other than that, a manpage is included and
the documentation is updated.

[016] - DNS Flood Detector 1.11
  by Dennis Opacki (http://freshmeat.net/users/dopacki/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 16:57

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
System :: Networking

About: DNS Flood Detector was developed to detect abusive usage levels on
high traffic nameservers and to enable quick response in halting (among
other things) the use of one's nameserver to facilitate spam. DNS Flood
Detector uses libpcap (in non-promiscuous mode) to monitor incoming dns
queries to a nameserver. The tool may be run in one of two modes, either
daemon mode or "bindsnap" mode. In daemon mode, the tool will alarm via
syslog. In bindsnap mode, the user is able to get near-real-time stats on
usage to aid in more detailed troubleshooting.

Changes: This release adds A6, AAAA, and ANY qtypes. It examines all
packets with >=1 qdcount. It will stop processing packets with invalid DNS
characters. TCP parsing has been fixed. A '-D' option has been added to
dump DNS packets.

  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 00:55

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: HTML Forms generation and validation is a PHP class that generates
HTML forms supporting keyboard navigation, many built-in validation types
on server and client sides, prevents security attacks by discarding
spoofed values, has multiple submit protection, outputs HTML for fields
displayed as fully accessible or in read-only mode, has field value
filtering based on regular expressions, and has automatic capitalization
of field text. It can be extended with custom input control plug-in
classes. Calendar date, CAPTCHA, and linked select plug-in controls are
available. The form output can be defined with templates using HTML with
embedded PHP or the Smarty template engine.

Changes: The Optional attribute was added to the date custom input class
to make it accept empty date fields as valid. The form HTML output
encoding of all attributes was verified and completed to prevent
outputting potentially invalid HTML when the attributes include HTML
special characters. The output of style attributes of textarea fields was
added.

  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 07:59

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: MillScript-XML is an alternative Java XML parsing library with its
own custom API. The underlying tokenizer can be configured to permit
non-well-formed XML. This library's API provides both an event model and a
more conventional token stream model. The authors believe that the token
stream is more friendly to applications, easier to use, and helps to
minimise object creation and inter-conversion of types with the parser. A
SAX2 implementation is provided for compatibility with existing
applications.

Changes: This initial alpha release provides tokenizing support for both
non-well-formed and well-formed XML documents, character encoding
autodetection (including byte order marks), and a SAX2 XMLReader
implementation.

and less memory-intensive).

Changes: The release fixes various matching problems, including /d
deleting and /p printing too much, inverted matching, addresses ranges,
and last line match. New-line and other escape sequences are now
substituted. Some segmention faults have been fixed. Printing the pattern
space is faster. The code was ported to modern ANSI C to allow compilation

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities

About: msort is a program for sorting files in sophisticated ways. It
differs from typical sort utilities in providing greater flexibility in
parsing the input into records and identifying key fields and greater
control over the sort order. Records need not be single lines of text but
may be delimited in a number of ways. Key fields may be selected either by
position or by tag. For each key an arbitrary sort order may be specified.
The sort order may contain multigraphs. In addition to the usual
lexicographic and numerical orderings, msort supports sorting by date,
time, and string length. Any or all keys may be optional. For optional
keys, the user may specify how records missing the key field should
compare to records in which the key field is present. The basic program
has a somewhat complex command line interface, but it may be driven by an
optional GUI.

Changes: UTF-8 Unicode is now fully supported. Input text, field and
record separators, tag regular expressions, exclusions, and sort order
specifications may all be given in Unicode. The GUI now provides various
character entry tools to facilitate the entry of non-ASCII characters.

Whether you are an Internet Cafe operator or a librarian, Openkiosk can
make your life easier.

Changes: This release features a major code overhaul from earlier
versions. Notably, the kiosk locker window no longer runs in the address
space of KDE's kicker. Instead, a proxy applet launches a separate
KioskLock process and communicates to it via DCOP (KDE's IPC mechanism).
This way, switching to Kiosk-Mode UI can be a seamless process. In
addition, initial support for deploying kiosk desktop Web applications

  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 22:28

Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: PHPlist is a mailing list and newsletter manager that allows
posting via a Web page. It works well when used for announcements, and can
handle very large email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists,
but will only receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing
up, users can identify their geographical location, and messages can be
targetted to these. You can add place holders in your email that will be
replaced with personal details (such as the person's name). Users can
update their own information, and unlike many other mailing list systems,
they can change their email address. HTML emails are supported.

Changes: This version fixes numerous bugs and adds a few features. The
tinyMCE text editor was integrated. New features include click-through
tracking, the ability to forward to someone else, the ability to view open
rates of emails, alerts when email sending starts and finishes, domain
throttling, and complex bounce handling. Spanish, French, Brazilian
Portuguese, and Chinese translations were added. The way that a user can
be removed from the blacklist was updated. "[email]" was added as a

[065] - Plash 1.10
  by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 14:23

Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System

About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.

Changes: The fchdir() call is now implemented. There are several programs
that need fchdir(), including "rm" (when using the "-r" option), "install"
(when using the "-d" option) and "mkdir" (when using the "-p" option).
These now work under Plash. Plash's libc maintains a table for file
descriptors that are not implemented by the kernel. This table maps slots
containing directory file descriptors to references to dir_stack objects.

[067] - Python milter 0.8.2
  by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 12:00

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run
with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail
talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter
informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the
milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT,
REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from
sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also
ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.

Changes: This release implements strict processing limits per the (now
official) SPF RFC. Several parsing bugs under the RFC has been fixed.
Official IANA SPF records (type99) are supported. Honeypot support has
been added (requires pydspam-1.1.9). Supports extended SPF processing
results beyond strict RFC limits. Supports original SES for bounce
protection (requires pysrs-0.30.10). A callback exception processing
option has been added to the milter module. Corrupt zip attachments are
handled.

[069] - RTL-check 0.1.3
  by tootix (http://freshmeat.net/users/tootix/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 22:29

Software Development

About: RTL-check is a framework for static analysis of programs from a
safety and security perspective. It performs analysis on RTL, which is the
low-level intermediate representation generated by GCC. This framework was
created for a research project that deals with static analysis and memory
safety of programs developed in unsafe languages such as C or C++. In
particular, it is targeted at detecting buffer overflows statically and
proving their absence. However, this framework should be useful for other
projects dealing with static analysis.

Changes: The main improvement of this version is that the framework now
supports widening and narrowing. The linear solver has been converted to
use the new interface. Also, a few modules have been cleaned up and some
bugs were fixed.

[073] - sshdfilter 1.3.4
  by Greg (http://freshmeat.net/users/grg/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 05:23

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: sshdfilter automatically blocks ssh brute force attacks by reading
sshd log output in real time and adding iptables rules based on
authentication failures. Block rules are created by logging on with an
invalid user name, or wrongly guessing the password for an existing
account. Block rules are removed after a week to maintain a small list of
blocks. It also comes with a LogWatch filter.

Changes: The LogWatch scripts were synchronized to this version. The
number of permitted attempts ($maxchances) is now a distribution-specific
parameter. SSHD chain rules are now flushed at startup. An install script
has been written. The check for SSHD redirection broke when the redirect
was after the SSHD chain. A DoS and remote root exploit caused by bad
assumptions during log parsing were fixed. Upgrading from all versions is

  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 13:16

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: Studs MVC Framework+ contains a port of Apache's Jakarta Struts to
PHP, though the libraries included in the rest of the project are much
more vast. In order to implement the Struts port, it was necessary to
build a core, object-oriented API in the style of the JDK and the Jakarta
Commons, a servlet container to handle HTTP requests and to invoke
servlet classes, and finally, a parsing engine for JSP-style template
pages. In the end, the result is an environment which is very similar to
that provided by a J2EE Web Container, only everything is implemented in
PHP. While it was possible to carry over many of the concepts, designs
and mechanisms from J2EE, some limitations do exist due to the nature of
the PHP programming language, such as the lack of checked exceptions
(runtime only).

Changes: This release features a handful of optimizations and consistency
improvements. An ActionForm generator was added, the ability to use
mod_rewrite as the controlling action was implemented, multivalue
checkboxes are now possible, and a lot more flexibility has been added for
the location of the various configuration files. One of the bootstrap
functions was optimized for overall speed enhancements.

[082] - Transolution 0.4beta2
  by fredrikc (http://freshmeat.net/users/latrin/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 16:54

Software Development :: Internationalization
Software Development :: Localization
Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: Transolution is a Computer Aided Translation (CAT) suite supporting
the XLIFF standard. It provides the open source community with features and
concepts that have been used by commercial offerings for years to improve
translation efficiency and quality. The suite is modular to make it
flexible and provides an XLIFF Editor, translation memory engine and
filters to convert different formats to and from XLIFF. The use of XLIFF
means that almost any content can be localized as long as there is a
filter for it (XML, SGML, PO, RTF, StarOffice/OpenOffice, etc.).

Changes: This version includes a couple of bugfixes (Mainly TM related) ,
Indian language codes, and some small UI updates.

[083] - Tstat 1.01
  by Marco Mellia (http://freshmeat.net/users/mellia/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 21:36

Internet
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Tstat provides information about classic and novel performance
indexes and statistical data about Internet traffic. It collects
measurement indexes at both the network (IP) layer and transport (TCP/UDP)
layer. Real time protocols (RTP/RTCP) are also analyzed, allowing you to
get statistical measurements on VOIP traffic, for example. Tstat analyzes
either real-time captured packet traces, or previously recorded
packet-level traces in various dump formats.

Changes: erf.c was updated so that VLAN encapsulation over SSH should also
be correctly decoded. An experimental and quick patch was added that allows
reading from two separate files when using the ERF file formats. A bug in
address.c that caused wrong hit counter updates was fixed. Some #ifdef
errors when GROK_TCPDUMP was not defined were fixed. Some problems when
reading from a pipe were fixed.

About: UPKG (Universal PaCkaGe manager) is a modular package manager. It
supports the RPM, DEB, and Slackware TGZ package formats and doesn't
depend of any distribution-specific tools. It is completely
self-sufficient, as formats such as cpio were reimplemented.

Changes: Support for Debian packages was added. zlib was rewritten in
upkg-rpm. Multiple bugs were removed. Overwriting packages with the same
name is now allowed. Libraries may now be specified in the config. Fixes
were made in upkg-file. findfile and find were updated so that wildcard is
prepended and appended. Colliding files are shown. A Makefile fix was done.

[086] - Virtual AGC 20050720
  by Ron Burkey (http://freshmeat.net/users/rburkey/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 06:04

Scientific/Engineering
System :: Emulators

About: Virtual AGC is a simulation of the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC)
used in the Apollo Command Modules and Lunar Modules in 1968-1972, as well
as the Abort Guidance System (AGS) used in the LM. The project includes an
emulated CPU, an emulated display/keyboard (DSKY), the AGC's original
executable binaries and machine-readable assembly-language source code
(Luminary and Colossus), AGC source code for a CPU validation suite, an
AGC assembler, scanned Apollo documentation, and other elements. The
emulated CPU has been designed to be modular and portable, to facilitate
incorporation into spacecraft simulations such as lunar-lander
simulations.

Changes: Window management features have been added to make running and
shutting down the simulation much more convenient. The simulated IMU, FDAI
ball, and LM rotational hand controller are now functional. The AGC digital
uplink and digital downlink are working. The AGC retains the contents of
erasable memory when powered down. The Abort Guidance System is working.
Portions of the Colossus 3 ("Artemis") source code have been made
available. An annoying but non-critical inconsistency in the assembler
(yaYUL) has been fixed. There is now an online Virtual AGC discussion
group.

[088] - WallpaperZapper 0.1.1
  by nicolasr (http://freshmeat.net/users/nicolasr/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 21:54

Desktop Environment :: Tools

About: WallpaperZapper is a GNOME background changer. It randomly selects
backgrounds from the GNOME list. It is written in
Python/PyGTK/python-gnome.

Changes: gamin is no longer used to monitor background files. GNOMEvfs is
used instead. The wallpaper popup menu has been modified so it now
presents a background together with a thumbnail. The wallpaper list is now
sorted on wallpaper name. The about dialog now inherits from
gtk.AboutDialog, so it should be more like GTK. An adapter between
Wallpapers and GConf was added. Usual code cleanups were done, including
fixes for typos, removal of comments, and modification of configuration
parameters.

[089] - Web Performance Trainer 2.8 Beta Build 606
  by Michael Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 08:05

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: This is the first public release of WPT 2.8, which adds
everything needed to automatically handle not only dynamic field values,
but dynamic field names as well. Test cases can also repeat from any point
in the test case, so you can record a login and then have subsequent
repeats of the test case skip the login part. In addition, it has been
tested successfully with 1000 virtual users on a modern Windows server
machine. Numerous stability enhancements were also made.

[092] - XMLLiterate 1.0.0.4
  by Paul Hamilton (http://freshmeat.net/users/phamtec/)
  Wed, Jul 20th 2005 04:27

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Documentation

About: XMLLiterate is framework for literate programming using XML. It
uses the STL and patterns extensively and runs on all platforms supported
by Boost.

Changes: Standalone code is now supported. This is code that is not
dependant on cppxmlobj. This means that all of the source for cppliterate
now appears in the XML files in literate folders and is tangled. For this
to work, constructors and destructors were added to objects and a scheme
for placing other code trees into the schema was devised so that not
everything descends from @xmlobj. The next step is to create a "skel"
system which can be used to build new project directories outside of
xmlliterate. Lots of bugs were fixed.
