Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: AfterStep is a Window Manager for X which started by emulating the
NeXTSTEP look and feel, but which has been significantly altered according
to the requests of various users. Many adepts will tell you that NeXTSTEP
is not only the most visually pleasant interface, but also one of the most
functional and intuitive out there. AfterStep aims to incorporate the
advantages of the NeXTSTEP interface, and add additional useful features.
Changes: Significant improvements include new XML tools to assist
configuration, bugfixes and polish in ASWallpaper, the GTK colorscheme
generator, placement features, and the Command suites.

[004] - Asymptote 0.83
by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Printing
About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: This release extends Asymptote to three dimensions, with the
addition of triple and guide3 types and projections. Three-dimensional
arrays can now be read in line mode, using blank lines as block
delimiters. An array pop function was added. Math mode delimiters were
moved to within the "defaultformat" string. The xline and yline routines
were renamed to xequals and yequals, Dot was renamed to dot, Cross was
renamed to cross, and Angle(pair) was renamed to degrees(pair). A
segmentation fault involving control points with direction specifiers and
a bug in font(pen) were fixed.

Communications :: Fax
About: fax4CUPS is a very simple shell script that acts as a CUPS backend
for a serial fax modem. Essentially, you print with lpr and the fax is
sent. The nice thing is that you have CUPS around, and this means, for
instance, that you can check whether your fax has been sent just using
your favorite browser (as you would do for any other printer), even if the
fax modem is really on a remote server. It supports efax, HylaFAX, and

About: Plan 9 From User Space is a port of the bulk of the Plan 9 software
build environment to Unix. While the libraries make an attempt to play nice
with the rest of the system (by using the Unix rules for printf verbs and

build environment as faithfully as possible, providing u.h and libc.h, and
blithely redefining tokens such as open, dup, and accept in order to
provide implementations that better mimic the Plan 9 semantics. The result

programs can typically be compiled with little or no changes.

Tue, Jul 19th 2005 02:26
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers
support for reliable syslog over TCP, writing to MySQL databases, and
fully configurable output formats (including great timestamps). It is
designed as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to
work with the same config file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features
require changing the config file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: This is primarily a bugfix release. It fixes a nasty bug where
the TIMESTAMP was not properly decoded for some months. It also adds the
capability to specify the destination port when forwarding messages to a
remote host. Lastly, a very experimental TCP sender is now included.
However, the TCP sender cannot yet be used in production, as it causes
rsyslogd to hang during certain events, e.g. when connecting to the
receiver.

[070] - Stunnix VBS-Obfus 2.7
by Stunnix (http://freshmeat.net/users/stunnix/)
Tue, Jul 19th 2005 08:17
Internet
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Stunnix VBS-Obfus protects your VBScript code from potential
analysis, study, or reworking by unwanted parties. It's both an obfuscator
and encoder for the VBScript code. It converts the VBScript in raw .vbs
files, or in ASP or HTML pages into a highly obfuscated form, making it
extremely difficult to study, analyse, or reuse, while fully retaining
functionality of the original source code. It optionally adds expiration
and hostname checking. It has a lot of options to control all aspects of
code hiding, and has full support for all syntax constructs. It is
designed to be multi-module aware.
Changes: This release adds one important and several almost non-important
bugfixes and a "Project-Quit GUI" menu item in the Project Manager GUI.

[071] - SurakWare Base Library 0.4.0-rc5
by trapni (http://freshmeat.net/users/trapni/)
Tue, Jul 19th 2005 09:12
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: The purpose of the SurakWare Base Library (SWL/libswl) is to serve
as a platform independent framework for C++ and QPascal. The SWL includes
both thin layers over functionality exposed by the Linux and Windows
operating systems as well as higher level classes for many purposes. Save
for a few exceptions, the SWL is completely indpedenent from the STL and
the C/C++ runtime library. Platform independence has been achieved by
encapsulating OS-specific implementation details in a number of SWL
classes. There should never be a need to use "#ifdef"s to distinguish
between platforms.
Changes: A false syntax-error problem when overwriting for sub-sections is
not allowed was fixed. The TDebug API was back-ported from SWL 0.5, as it
implicitly fixes the "DEBUG environment-variable bug". Code cleanup was
done. The API was extending for TArgumentEvalator, TStream,
TNetworkStream, TConsole, and TAnsiColor. The Unix API implementation is
now more complete. TThreadPool and TPollMgr were improved.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT
About: Syntext Serna is an XSL-on-the-fly WYSIWYG XML document editor.
During the editing process, it renders XML documents according to XSL
stylesheets (e.g., a Docbook XSL stylesheet similar to the Norman Walsh
one). As a result, authors constantly see rendered and transformed content
which looks similar to the final presentation. It also provides on-the-fly
XML schema validation and extensive entity support.
Changes: This release brings a number of new features, such as WebDAV
support, XInclude parse="text" support, basic form support, a preview of a
Python API, and others. Some bugs were fixed.

Communications
Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
About: Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups
to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables
software developers to create new communication tools with built-in
privacy features. It provides the foundation for a range of applications
that allow organizations and individuals to share information over
public networks without compromising their privacy. Individuals can use
it to keep remote Websites from tracking them and their family members.
They can also use it to connect to resources such as news sites or
instant messaging services that are blocked by their local Internet
service providers (ISPs).
Changes: This release fixes an assert that was triggered if an
authoritative directory server claims its dirport is 0. A bug that
occurred when Tor was removed as an NT service was fixed.

dedicated to LANs. It is almost 100% compatible with Vypress Chat for
Windows. It allows you to chat with friends on public or private
channels, and send and receive messages etc. The GUI is user- friendly,
and there is optional sound support.
Changes: A presence notify packet is sent to the requester only, not to
all; this should stop flood alerts. A bug with zombie processes in libao
and arts support was fixed. A memory leak on the 'play' command and
external scripts execution was fixed. The autoconf script was updated with
the latest version of the bnv_have_qt macro.

[077] - WindowLab 1.32
by Nick Gravgaard (http://freshmeat.net/users/nickgravgaard/)
Tue, Jul 19th 2005 22:29
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: WindowLab is a small and simple window manager of novel design. It
has a click-to-focus but not raise-on-focus policy, a window resizing
mechanism that allows one or many edges of a window to be changed in one
action, and an innovative menubar that shares the same part of the screen
as the taskbar. Window titlebars are prevented from going off the edge of
the screen by constraining the mouse pointer. When appropriate, the
pointer is also constrained to the taskbar/menubar in order to make target
menu items easier to hit.
Changes: The executable has been made relocatable. Double clicking on a
window's titlebar now toggles its depth. A segfault when using realloc()
with menu items was fixed. A bug with applications that start in iconic
mode was fixed. A -display option was added. The initial position and size
hints in WM_HINTS are now ignored since they are flagged as obsolete in the
manpage of SetWMHints.

[078] - ziproxy 1.5.0
by Daniel Mealha Cabrita (http://freshmeat.net/users/dancab/)
Tue, Jul 19th 2005 11:45
Internet :: Proxy Servers
About: ziproxy is a forwarding (non-caching) proxy that gzips text and
HTML files, and reduces the size of images by converting them to low
quality JPEGs. It is intended to increase the speed for dial-up Internet
connections. Most browsers support gzipped content, so Web pages appear as
normal, but as they are only a fraction of their original page size, pages
are much quicker to load. Even for browsers that don't support it, hints
how to overcome it using SSH port forwarding are included. Images are
reduced in size by an average of one third, with only marginal visible
image quality loss. It should be used with inetd/xinetd, but if you can't
use them, a simple replacement "netd" is provided.
Changes: This release adds a preemptive hostname resolver and customizable
error messages. Several bugs have been fixed.
