[002] - Anarchy Window Manager 0.1.0.1
  by Eduardo Cavazos (http://freshmeat.net/users/dharmatech/)
  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 03:14

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: Anarchy is a window manager for the X Window System. It is
implemented in less than 500 lines of CLOS oriented Scheme code. The
implementation language is Gauche Scheme. Despite its small code size, it
supports most functions expected of a basic window manager (move, resize,
hide, minimize, maximize, list windows, root menu).

Changes: The wm-root class has been implemented. Most of the low-level
Xlib calls have been replaced by high-level functions.

Database :: Front-Ends

About: anymeal is a cookbook database front-end. It can handle more than
100,000 recipes, and can search recipes for a given set of ingredients. It
is designed to be lean and flexible.

Changes: There was another bugfix for the mealmaster-compiler. The
mealmaster-compiler now accepts continuation-lines of ingredients, which
are beginning in the first column and ending in the second column.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: AudienceConnect::E-Zine is a revenue-generating Python CGI solution
for independent content providers. Requests for dynamic content are routed
through PayPal. Previews of that content are generated as static HTML for
search engines to harvest. Self-publishers can upload and publish
remotely, or the editorial CGI can be used to view and publish
submissions. AudienceConnect can be extended to deliver any digital
content such as sound and image files. Installation is very simple, as no
database technologies are used.

Changes: This release synchronises with THR33 0.6.1. There were bugfixes
in the PayPal system.

[021] - Electric Fence 2.4.15
  by Hayati Ayguen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hayguen/)
  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 23:11

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Electric Fence (efence) stops your program on the exact instruction
that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer. GDB will then
display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works by using the
virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of each buffer
- touch that, and your program stops. Catch all of those formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs that have been bothering you for years.

Changes: Bugs in page management under Windows where virtual address space
was never released was fixed, though this fix avoids memory pooling (under
Windows). An ExitOnFail parameter was added to Page_Create(). A warning is
now displayed when an allocation failed and ExitOnFail is off.
_eff_allocate() was extended for this.

About: The Electric Sheep screensaver realizes the collective dream of
sleeping computers from all over the Internet. It harnesses idle computers
into a render farm for the purpose of animating and evolving artificial
organisms.

Changes: A bug where all sheep could be deleted because of network errors
was fixed along with a bug where special environment arguments to
flam3-animate were not necessarily null-terminated. The program now zooms
down to fit in the xscreensaver preview window. Better logging was
implemented along with an update to the latest flam3 library. GCC 4
compatibility was achieved and autotools and the man page were updated.
electricsheep.spec and electricsheep.xml are now automatically generated
with the current version number.

  by Dark Logic (http://freshmeat.net/users/darklogic/)
  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 01:44

Security :: Cryptography

About: EverCrack is a cryptanalysis engine. The overall design goal is to
systematically break down complex ciphers into their simplex components
for cryptanalysis (by the kernel). The kernel consists of an algebraic
design (comparison and reduction) for breaking uniliteral, monoalphabetic
ciphers instantaneously. Currently, it can break a 500-word cipher in less
than 500 miliseconds. EverCrack currently has multi-language support for
the user interface and cracking encryption in other language dictionaries
(English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, and
Portuguese).

Changes: This release was ported to Linux by using Cygwin. Basic
multi-language support was added. Lexicon modification capabilities were
added for adding new words to an existing lexicon set or for creating a

[026] - fetchmail 6.2.5.2
  by Matthias Andree (http://freshmeat.net/users/mandree/)
  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 00:06

Communications :: Email

About: Fetchmail is a free, full-featured, robust, well-documented
remote-mail retrieval and forwarding utility intended to be used over
on-demand TCP/IP links (such as SLIP or PPP connections). It supports
every remote-mail protocol now in use on the Internet: POP2, POP3, RPOP,
APOP, KPOP, all flavors of IMAP, and ESMTP ETRN. It can even support IPv6
and IPSEC.

Changes: This release fixes CAN-2005-2335 (a remote code injection
vulnerability through a malicious POP3 server's UIDL replies).
RFC-821/2821 conformance was fixed by not emitting a blank between MAIL
FROM: and the address, which caused mail loss on some sites. The POP2
driver now checks for authentication failures. The APOP/RPOP drivers no
longer attempt to get SIZE for a message range. Fetchmail has been handed
to new maintainers and has changed its home site.

[028] - Gambas 1.9.13 (Development)
  by gambas (http://freshmeat.net/users/gambas/)
  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 22:54

Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Gambas is a graphical development environment based on a Basic
interpreter, like Visual Basic. It uses the Qt toolkit, but is able to use
any other toolkit that a module is written for.

Changes: The source package structure has been redesigned a little, and
now uses symbolic links so that size is reduced. The IDE now stores
control coordinates proportionally to the system font height. Extern
functions can be public. The interpreter uses mmap() to load executables
and components written in Gambas. Each component can have a part written
in C/C++ and a part written in Gambas. Enumerable container classes now
know when they are enumerated so that they can safely delete their
elements. The TrayIcon class was implemented. The OpenGL beta component
was included.

Software Development :: Compilers

About: jRate is an extension of the GNU GCJ compiler front-end and
runtime system that adds support for most of the features required by
the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ), including threading
constructs with real-time constraints, asynchronous event handling, and
memory regions. It was initially developed at Washington University in
St. Louis and is released under a license similar to GCC's GPL license
that allows non-GPLed programs to be compiled and linked.

Changes: This beta release includes many new, highly-requested features
over the last stable release (0.3.7-3.3.3). RealtimeThreads now enjoy a
more stable periodic release (especially on non-RTOSes) and honor their
specified start time. Cost overrun and more complete deadline miss
handling have been implemented. One-shot timers have been implemented.
Heap checks are now performed for NoHeapRealtimeThreads (when compiling
from bytecode). Some segfaults have been cleared up. Also,
AsyncEventHandlers now use a more standard API.

System :: Monitoring

About: Kismet is an 802.11 layer 2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and
intrusion detection system. It will work with any wireless card which
supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, and
802.11g traffic. It identifies networks by passively collecting packets
and detecting standard named networks, detecting (and given time,
decloaking) hidden networks, and inferring the presence of nonbeaconing
networks via data traffic.

Changes: This release fixed segfaults in kismet_client, added Linux
radiotap support, fixed _DBM_x radiotap handling, fixed signal level
rendering in client, fixed WPA detection, added full WPA capabilities
decoding, fixed support for some custom wrt54 firmwares, and added OpenBSD

[042] - libhash 1.1
  by Geet Duggal (http://freshmeat.net/users/geetduggal/)
  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 23:52

About: Libhash provides a clean and efficient C interface for chained
hashing. It addition to the normal functions, it supports generalized
keys, iteration over keys, values, and entries, and allows user control
over memory use and hashing functions. It was created in response to the
bloated code of larger libraries containing hash functionality (such as
the fast Perl and XML hashes). The implementation is robust enough to
allow substitution of hashing and comparison functions for general void*
keys while being small enough to be easily used in larger projects. The
library is designed such that dynamic hashing libraries can be cleanly
built using it.

Changes: Support for extending the library with dynamic hashing was added,
a few bugs were fixed, and support for "multivalue" hash tables was added.

[053] - PhysicsFS 1.0.1
  by icculus (http://freshmeat.net/users/icculus/)
  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 01:00

Games/Entertainment
Software Development :: Libraries

About: PhysicsFS is a library to provide abstract access to various
archives. The programmer defines a "write directory" on the physical
filesystem. No file writing done through the PhysicsFS API can leave that
 write directory, for security. For file reading, the programmer lists
directories and archives that form a "search path". Once the search path
is defined, it becomes a single, transparent, hierarchical filesystem.
This makes for easy access to ZIP files in the same way as you access a
file directly on the disk, and it makes it easy to ship a new archive
that will override a previous archive on a per-file basis. Symbolic links
can be disabled, for added safety. Finally, PhysicsFS gives you a
platform- abstracted means to determine if CD-ROMs are available, the
user's home directory, where in the real filesystem your program is
running, etc.

Changes: A bug in zip archiver directory handling was fixed. The internal
zlib was updated to 1.2.3. Support for mingw was added to the Unix build
process. Spanish and Brazillian Portguese translations were added. Various
platform-specific fixes were made. HOG archiver file sorting was fixed. The
build system respects external CFLAGS now. Seeking now respects buffered
data.

Communications :: File Sharing
Documentation
Information Management

About: Pie is a lightweight content management system for Web-sharing
documents, files, and arbitrary pieces of information. Making use of a
Wiki's meta language and page-linking abilities, it lets authors create
and maintain content via HTTP on a corporate basis. It features an
emphasis on fast content delivery to its recipients rather than
sophisticated add-ons, therefore conveying compiled output instead of
performing time consuming run-time processing.

Changes: The new multi-user environment encourages writers to identify
themselves through distinctive usernames. File/page locking prevents
multiple users from working on the same page at a time. The location of
each each component is completely customizable. User actions that modify
the contents of the site can be logged. Internal anchors can be placed on
pages to be referred to via links. The ampersand selector in text spans
allows embedding special HTML-entities on pages. The equal selector in
text spans allows embedding arbitrary verbatim code into documents.

  Sun, Jul 24th 2005 23:23

System :: Archiving :: Compression
Utilities

About: SCZ is a set of simple, portable, light-weight file compression and
decompression utilities. Simple compress and decompress subroutines can be
linked and called within applications to compress or unpack data on the
fly. These functions can also be used through stand-alone utilities. The
initial set of routines implements a lossless compression algorithm, so
restoration and decompression are perfect.

Changes: This release added new stream access routines that allow ".scz"
files to be opened for reading or writing, followed by many individual
line (new-line delimited) or XML (tag-delimited) reads or writes, and
finally closed. This enables incremental writing or reading much like
fopen, feof, fgets, fputs, and fclose, but on compressed files and avoids
the need to do I/O on large intermediate buffers before compressing or
after decompressing.

Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities

About: The Unicode Description Utilities is a set of four programs for
finding out what is in a Unicode file. uniname defaults to printing the
character offset of each character, its byte offset, its hex code value,
its encoding, the glyph itself, and its name. Command line options allow
undesired information to be suppressed and the Unicode range to be added.
unidesc reports the character ranges to which different portions of the
text belong. unihist generates a histogram of the characters in its input.
ExplicateUTF8 is intended for debugging or for learning about Unicode. It
determines and explains the validity of a sequence of bytes as a UTF-8
encoding.

Changes: An option has been added to uniname that causes it to do nothing
but validate its input. If it encounters invalid UTF-8, it reports its
location and explains why it is invalid.
