About: acdctl is a commandline utility to control the otherwise
inaccessible brightness levels of a VESA-compliant USB connected display
such as the Apple Cinema Display. acdctl works on any system with libusb
support by directly manipulating the display's USB HID interface.
Changes: Acdctl now supports user-specified device identifiers, enabling
control of any VESA compliant USB connected display, not just Apple's.
Another display has been added to the built in list of displays, and the
code has been reorganized to make future additions easier.

[005] - ASCIIMathML 1.4.7
by Peter Jipsen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jipsen/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 00:48
Education
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: ASCIIMathML is a script that converts calculator-style ASCII math
notation (and many LaTeX formulas) to Presentation MathML while your Web
page loads. It works with HTML and XHTML files in Mozilla/Firefox/Netscape
7+ browsers, as well as in Internet Explorer 6 with MathPlayer. For
example, the solutions for the equation 'ax^2+bx+c=0' are expressed in the
HTML file as '(-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)', and display as nicely
formatted MathML. The script can be easily used in wikiservers and blogs,
as a rudimentary MathML editor (with instant preview), and to preview math
formulas as they are typed into a Web page input area.
Changes: ASCIIMathML.js can now be used on any HTML page by just adding
one line to load the script. So validating your HTML pages is now
possible, and use of HTML editors is simple. There is also a "newcommand"
function that allows simple macros and additional symbols to be added
easily. The script is backward compatible with earlier versions, so
upgrading should be no problem.

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Astaro Security Linux is an all-in-one network security gateway
that includes a firewall, intrusion protection, virus protection, spam
protection, URL filtering, and a VPN gateway. Features include stateful
packet inspection, deep packet filtering, intrusion detection and
prevention, portscan detection, content filtering, virus detection for
email and Web traffic, whitelists and blacklists, IPSec and PPTP VPN
tunneling, spam blocking, proxies for HTTP, FTP, SMTP, DNS, SIP, SOCKS,
and Ident, logging, and reporting. The WebAdmin and Up2Date service make
it easy to install, manage, and update.
Changes: This Up2Date fixes an NTLM authentication bug while using Windows

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: This release ports Asymptote to the Microsoft Windows operating
system. Label parameters are now in a structure called Label, to which
strings are implicitly cast, and which can be rotated and shifted with a
transform. Automatic sizing under picture transformation was fixed.
Lattice and Gouraud shading were added. A pen and filltype were added to
legend. An extend option was added to draw ticks across the graph for
producing a grid. Problems with nullguide3 were fixed, the arguments of 3d
rotate were swapped, and 3d reflections were added.

About: AuctionGallery is a terminal script that creates picture galleries
for the purpose of putting them into auctions like eBay or Yahoo!
Auctions. It can also be used to automatically generate HTML templates for
auction descriptions. It is aimed at power-sellers who have hundreds of
products listed every day and need an efficient way of generating
galleries and organizing pictures in a coherent directory structure.
Changes: The name of the package and executable was changed from gallery
to auctiongallery. Parsing configuration and template files were
eliminated. The trailing line break problem was fixed. convert_options now
requires a set of quotes. The command-line parameters -c, -t, and -h were
added. A man page was added. Sophisticated install and uninstall scripts
were added. The sample templates were renamed to sample1, sample2, and
sample3. The source code was reorganized, and everything was split into
functions. gallery.html was renamed to description.html.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
About: DansGuardian is a Web content filtering proxy that uses Squid to do
all the fetching. It filters using multiple methods including, but not
limited to, phrase matching, file extension matching, MIME type matching,
PICS filtering, and URL/domain blocking. It has the ability to switch off
filtering by certain criteria including username, domain name, source IP,
etc. The configurable logging produces a log in an easy to read format. It
has the option to only log text-based pages, thus significantly reducing
redundant information (such as every image on a page).
Changes: This release fixes a long standing startup bug that caused it to
reprocess files more often than needed. This means that it now starts up
several times more quickly. Many new content filtering phrase lists are
included. The IPC buffers were increased to resolve problems with long log
lines and URLs.

Sun, Aug 14th 2005 18:08
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: DOMIT! is an XML parser for PHP. It is lightweight, fast, and
implements a generous subset of the DOM Level 2 specification. The primary
goal of DOMIT! is to provide PHP developers with a standards-compliant
means of working with XML, thus ensuring more portable and communicable
code. DOMIT! is not an extension; it is written purely in PHP and should
therefore run on any Web hosting platform with PHP 4 and above installed.
DOMIT! requires coupling with a SAX parser. You can use either the SAXY
parser that comes bundled with DOMIT! or the Expat parser that is included
in most later PHP distributions.
Changes: This release contains many bugfixes, improved namespace support,
experimental XPath support, and new documentation in DocBook format.

by John Heinstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/jheinstein/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 18:08
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: DOMIT! RSS is an RSS parser for PHP. It does not require the
installation of extensions beyond the basic PHP distribution. Unlike most
existing PHP RSS clients, it uses a DOM XML parser (DOMIT!) to convert an
RSS feed into a DOM document that can be traversed using the standard DOM
methods. It is able to parse all flavors of RSS feed, and its API is
designed to work identically across all versions. Its caching mechanism
saves a local copy of the RSS feed and updates it only at specified
intervals. It is able to detect certain types of non-compliant XML and
repair them. The lightweight DOMIT! RSS Lite is available for users who
wish only to extract title, link, and description elements from a feed.
Changes: This release contains many bugfixes, new methods for extracting
RSS data, and documentation in DocBook format.

effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.
Changes: This release includes the sum of all work on 3.5, including the
following key enhancements: integrated Clam A/V support, unified spam
alias / UID-in-Signature support, domain-based delivery hosts, LDAP user
verification, PostgreSQL performance enhancements (for 8.0+), Markovian
discrimination, CRM sparse spectra driver, catch-all domain support,
unified logging, plussed detail support, message fragment support, domain

Changes: This release focuses on code cleanup and improved robustness. Any
functions that were still implemented inside a class were moved outside.
The RGBApixel** Pixels data member of the BMP class was made private. Two
new functions were added to provide a safe means to access and edit colors

Sun, Aug 14th 2005 00:42
About: Efax-gtk provides a GUI frontend for the efax fax program. It
interfaces with efax directly, replacing the scripts supplied with efax,
and can be used for receiving and sending faxes, and for viewing,

has a socket interface that provides a "virtual printer" for sending faxes
from word processors and similar programs, and can automatically e-mail a
received fax to a designated user and automatically print a received fax.
Changes: The fax lists now display the date and time on which a fax is
sent or received. The Hebrew translation was updated. The license of some

by Gerald Richter (http://freshmeat.net/users/richterg/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 07:31
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development
About: Embperl gives you the power to embed Perl code in your HTML or
XML/XSLT documents and the ability to build your Web site out of small
reusable objects in an OO-style. It can also build taglibs and use
caching. You can also take advantage of hundreds of Perl modules which
have already been written for such tasks as database access to a growing
number of database systems. Embperl has several features especially useful
for creating HTML, including dynamic tables, formfield-processing,
escaping/unescaping, session handling, and more. Embperl is a server-side
tool, which means that it's browser-independent. It can run in various
ways: under mod_perl, as a CGI script, or offline.
Changes: This version contains major enhancements over 1.3.6, like
improved performance, XML/XSLT handling, customizable syntax, support for
Apache/mod_perl 2, support for application (controller) objects, server
and client side form validation, and much more.

Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management
About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.
Changes: The clustering system now supports multiple exclusion filters in
order to hide results that match a series of specific criteria. This
allows for elaborated strategies to get rid of parasitic results and to
refine existing requests. This feature also applies to RSS feeds. Some
debugging has also been done on the Google Groups driver.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3
About: mp3cleanup is used to tidy up various aspects of MP3 files,
including filenames, ID3 tags, path, m3u playlists, and bitrate. This is
particularly useful for hardware MP3 players that sometimes have arbitrary
limitations on the files they work (well) with. It can operate on single
files or on all the files contained in a directory.
Changes: The -k option was added to check MP3s for bad frames before
processing. The -D option was added to increase search depth. The -b
option was added to create DOS format .m3u playlists. The -C option was
added to copy rather than move. The (experimental) -g option was added to
set the genre. Type "list" or "l" to get a list of genre numbers. Support
for Ogg Vorbis files was added. The default maximum filename length was

by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 05:20
Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System
About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.
Changes: Plash now provides a tool that lets you run XEmacs and then grant
it access to individual files and directories. The tool is used like
gnuclient. This means you don't have to give XEmacs access to all of your
files. It's now safer to run the shell as root. Documentation has been
improved and converted to DocBook format.

About: radlib is a C language library developed to abstract details of
interprocess communications and common Linux/Unix system facilities so
that application developers can concentrate on application solutions. It
encourages developers to use a proven paradigm of event-driven,

About: rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another. The target
directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs
are stored in a special directory so you can still recover files lost some
time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an
incremental backup. rdiff-backup can also operate in a bandwidth-
efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup

[059] - SAXY 1.0
by John Heinstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/jheinstein/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 21:33
Internet
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: SAXY is a Simple API for XML (SAX) XML parser for PHP 4. It is
lightweight, fast, and modeled on the methods of the Expat parser for
compatibility. The primary goal of SAXY is to provide PHP developers with
an alternative to Expat that is written purely in PHP. Since SAXY is not
an extension, it should run on any Web hosting platform with PHP 4 and
above installed.
Changes: This version contains a number of bugfixes in parsing comments
and namespaces. New documentation in DocBook format was added.

[060] - SB Timmy 0.2
by StableBeast (http://freshmeat.net/users/stablebeast/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 09:09
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
About: SB Timmy is an IMAP client for WAP/WML devices. It fully supports
MIME, including allowing the user to download attachments to their mobile
device, and supports sending mail via SMTP.
Changes: From now on, all links are fully qualified (with the host part),
e.g. http://foo.bar/foo/Default.aspx. This fixes two issues. The previous
behaviour prevented some WAP browsers from working correctly. With the
previous version, it was also impossible to host Timmy domain's root (e.g.
timmy.foo.com) because in such case Timmy was generating inappropriate
links (e.g. //Default.aspx).

Database :: API
Software Development
About: This library provides implementations of smart pointers for
automatically collected objects (using reference counting), object
persistence, unbounded and bounded arrays of smart pointers, generic
unbounded arrays of private objects and plain pointers, generic sets,
maps, stacks, and storage pools. It also includes table management, string
editing, and infix expression parsing tools.
Changes: The behavior of arguments sublists separators was clarified. The
call-back Enclose is now called for each sublist with the parameters
indicating the brackets or separators that start and end the sublist.
Parsers.Multiline_Source.Get_Line raises End_Error at the source end
(instead of Constraint_Error).

[065] - Spyrius 1.1.3
by Mark Lindner (http://freshmeat.net/users/mesmerism/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 00:57
About: Spyrius is a multithreaded superdaemon that provides TCP
connectivity to services that are implemented as loadable modules
("plug-ins"). The daemon was designed with extensibility, ease-of-use, and
performance in mind. It was implemented on Solaris 2.x but should be
generally portable to other POSIX systems. Spyrius is a prototype and is
not a fully-implemented, release-quality package; it is made available in
the hopes that it may prove to be useful in other open source projects.
Changes: This change includes a minor signal handling bugfix.

[066] - StringParser_BBCode 0.2.5
by Christian Seiler (http://freshmeat.net/users/christian_seiler/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 07:29
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Text Processing :: Markup
About: StringParser_BBCode is a PHP class that parses BBCodes with a real
parser and not just regular expressions. This ensures that the HTML
elements are correctly nested. It does not define any special codes, but
allows the programmer to do so herself. It provides many features, such as
the automatic detection and handling of paragraphs and the ability to apply
different so-called parser functions to different portions of the text that
is to be parsed.
Changes: Some small bugfixes were made. It is now possible to drop case
sensitivity globally. Phpdoc documentation was added.

[067] - SvxLink 050814
by Tobias Blomberg (SM0SVX) (http://freshmeat.net/users/sm0svx/)
Sun, Aug 14th 2005 18:06
Communications :: Ham Radio
About: The SvxLink project aims to develop a flexible general purpose
voice services system for ham radio use. The server consists of a core
that handles the connection to the tranceiver. The transceiver audio is
connected to the PC through the sound card, and the PTT is controlled by a
pin in the serial port. The core can act as a repeater controller or
operate on a simplex channel. The voice services are loaded into the core
as modules. Examples of existing voice services are a help system, a
module that plays back everything you say, and a module to connect to
other EchoLink stations. The project also includes an EchoLink client GUI
application (Qtel).
Changes: The repeater controller logic has now been thoroughly tested and
is considered stable. A new event handling subsystem written in TCL makes
it easy to customize the behaviour of the software at different events.
Also, it is now possible to connect two logic cores together to form a
link between, for example, two repeaters.

About: tovid is a GUI and suite of utilities designed to make VCD, SVCD,
and DVD authoring a little less painful. tovid can create MPEG output from
arbitrary video formats. Other components in the suite can help you
identify video files, generate graphical menus for DVD, and write the XML
for authoring DVDs.
Changes: Many small bugs were fixed and much code was refactored. The
output is prettier and parallel encoding may actually work. The progress
meter makes sense for the first time.

Sun, Aug 14th 2005 21:41
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Warrior XAMJ Browser is a browser that uses XAMJ, an XML language
designed to address many of the shortcomings of HTML and an open
alternative to Microsoft's XAML. XAMJ documents are generally served over
HTTP but can also be used in standalone applications, as Warrior itself is
written in XAMJ.
Changes: A Warrior Platform API has been implemented. This allows Java
applications to use Warrior as an XML UI Framework without the need to
install it as a browser/platform. A workaround has been implemented for a
JRE bug involving a NullPointerException on URL.openConnection. This bug
only affects JREs prior to 1.5.0_01. Finally, a bug that prevented the
archive class loader from loading resources has been fixed.

Sun, Aug 14th 2005 01:19
System :: Software Distribution Tools
About: whohas is a command line tool that allows you to query several
package collections at once. It currently supports Arch Linux, Debian,
Fedora, Gentoo, Slackware (and linuxpackages.net), Source Mage Linux,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Fink, and DarwinPorts repositories. whohas was
designed to help package maintainers find ebuilds, pkgbuilds, and similar
package definitions from other distributions to learn from. However, it
can also be used by normal users who want to know which distribution
provides certain packages, and which version of a given package is in use
in each distribution or in each release of a distribution.
Changes: Support was added for Fink, DarwinPorts, and linuxpackages.net. A
Debian version number bug was fixed. The size of the first column was
changed to fit the strings "Source Mage" and "DarwinPorts".

Sun, Aug 14th 2005 05:29
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering
About: wview is an application that controls a Davis Vantage Pro or
Vantage Pro2 weather station console to retrieve archive records and
current conditions. Archive records may optionally be stored in a
relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a user-defined interval,
wview will use the archive history and current conditions to generate
weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages based on configurable
HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data loggers, as well as
connectivity with a terminal server or serial server via TCP sockets.
Changes: Weather Underground interface support was added. A host of new
HTML tags and corresponding data computation and storage were added. These
tags address "holes" in the standard data points provided by the Vantage
Pro console/protocol. A new HTML template file, "almanac.htx", was created
which utilizes the majority of the new HTML tags to display comprehensive
weather information in one easy-to-read place.
