[001] - AF Architecture 1.0-rc3
by Advanced Software Production Line (http://freshmeat.net/users/aspl/)
  Thu, Aug 18th 2005 11:03

Office/Business
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Af-Arch is an N-tier development framework to quickly build
high-quality distributed applications. It currently supports C and C#
programming languages, which enables you to write client applications
using them. It currently runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows, and is
being used in production environments.

Changes: This release implements a new request notification mechanism,
which allows you to track and keep notified client applications while
performing requests. A request filtering mechanism allows you to control
which request can be issued from an Af-Arch client application. This is
used to stop/modify request emission under some circumstances. A new
module called AfDal Naming allows you to validate and use service names,
getting the different parts the service name is made of. Many af-gen
fixes/improvements, and much more.

  by kodeCharlie (http://freshmeat.net/users/kodeCharlie/)
  Thu, Aug 18th 2005 06:51

Information Management
Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Ajaqs is a Web app that organizes FAQs on a per-project basis. It
is designed to be deployed under popular Web and application servers. It
aims to serve two purposes: to provide engineering groups a mechanism for
consolidating and preserving in-house knowledge in connection to product
development and usage, and to provide small companies with a Web interface
for exposing searchable, internationalizable information related to
products and services.

Changes: This version has been ported to Castor 0.9.7, the Servlet/JSP
2.4/2.0, and the JSTL 1.1.

[003] - Another File Integrity Checker 2.8-2
  by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
  Thu, Aug 18th 2005 03:17

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added,
changed, or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of
aide or tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.

Changes: Afick.cron was renamed into afick_cron so that it works on
Debian, which does not allow cron file names that contain dots. The
program can now be used by any user again. The config file can now be set
with an environment variable, AFICK_CONFIG.

Adaptive Technologies
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries

About: ANSI-CIO is a set of replacements for the file functions of the
stdio.h. They offer the ability to share file accesses, and to open,
read, write (and more) files concurrently. Using these functions it is
possible to open a file more often than only once and to access it. All
functions are completely compatible with their ANSI counterparts.

Changes: Some potential problems have been removed by initializing several
variables and memory areas by default.

[012] - Cream CRM 2.0.0
  by Campware (http://freshmeat.net/users/campware/)
  Thu, Aug 18th 2005 01:58

Communications :: Email
Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale

About: Cream is a customer relationship management (CRM) system that
addresses the specific needs of media organizations. Built using Apache
Tomcat, Velocity, and Turbine, it uses a PostgreSQL database (but other
JDBC-compliant databases should work as well). It has several features
specific to media organizations, such as subscription management, support
for multiple products, customer communications, easy-to-use reporting and
analytical functions, and tracking of special offers such as seasonal
discounts and trade shows.

Changes: This version features functionality for receiving text and HTML
email, sending of HTML emails and newsletters with a WYSIWYG HTML editor,
newsletter subscriptions for anonymous users, external HTML forms for
newsletter subcription and unsubscription, a powerful filter for sending
newsletters to either newsletter subscribers or all customers (based on
type, category, product, and campaign), import of products and customers,
and localizations to Dutch, German, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and
Serbian languages. The program now also works on Windows.

[013] - DenyHosts 1.0.1
  by Phil Schwartz (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_schwartz/)
  Thu, Aug 18th 2005 11:44

About: DenyHosts is a script intended to help Linux system administrators
thwart ssh server attacks. DenyHosts scans an ssh server log, updates
/etc/hosts.deny after a configurable number of failed attempts from a
rogue host is determined, and alerts the administrator of any suspicious
logins.

Changes: This version fixes a daemon-mode related bug that appeared if the
hosts-root file was empty. Additionally, a new optional configuration
parameter was added, DAEMON_LOG_TIME_FORMAT, which allows the end user to
specify a timestamp format for the log file output. To stop the daemon,
you must send a SIGTERM rather than SIGHUP. The daemon-control-dist script
has been updated to reflect this.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: This version provides significant speed enhancements over 1.x
versions. It supports both IMS import and export of course contents. It
was made easier for Course Coordinators to change access restrictions and
deadlines for their course content. There is now enhanced support for
embedded mathematical and chemical typesetting within course content and
homework problems. Course Coordinators are provided with a configurable
one-stop "What's New?" page that assembles significant events and alerts
for their courses.

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: Some debugging has been done on the Google Groups driver in order
to parse the search results' URLs correctly.

About: poker-network includes a poker server, a client library, an
abstract user interface library, and a client based on it. The server
deals the cards and checks the user actions using a poker game engine
(poker-engine). It listens on a TCP/IP port and understands its own
specific protocol. The persistent information is stored in a MySQL
database. The client library implements the poker-network protocol for the
client. The abstract user interface library provides a framework based on
the client library and suited to implement a user friendly client.

Changes: A client upgrade system that fetches new versions from a remote
repository was implemented along with a versioning and migration system
for XML configuration files. An upgrade system was added for the server
database. Internationalization bugs in SOAP/XMLRPC communications were

[041] - Prometheus QoS 0.5.3
  by Michael Polak (http://freshmeat.net/users/xchaos/)
  Thu, Aug 18th 2005 21:49

System :: Networking

About: Prometheus QoS (Quality of Service) is an ISP-oriented tool for
easy manipulation of the IP traffic shaping and sharing features of the
Linux kernel. It generates multiple nested HTB traffic control classes
with fine-grained rate and ceiling values and implements optional daily
(or simply periodical) data transfer quotas and data transfer statistics
(as HTML). It is compatible with NAT (both asymmetric and symmetric), yet
still provides good two-way shaping and prioritizing for both uploads and
downloads.

Changes: The most important change is probably the bugfix that allows the
magic-fixed-prio and magic-relative-prio parameters to be used even with
magic-fixed-limit and magic-relative-limit set to 0. This means that
Prometheus can now be used to freely share spare bandwith as a real
Quality of Service (QoS) tool, and not only just as a traffic shaper and
Fair Use Policy (FUP) enforcement tool.

About: The Wheel 'O Yum is a program to assist in deciding where to eat.
All too often, excess time is spent among groups trying to decide. The
Wheel 'O Yum allows people to vote on their favorite restaurants and spin
the wheel for a random restaurant.

Changes: An auto-login capability was added to the client applet. Several
security bugs in the message protocol which could permit impersonation and
identity fraud were fixed. Restaurant URLs are now escaped so CGI params
may be included. The server's message handling was improved with respect
to I/O errors. Performance of the communications protocol was improved. By
default, the applet will not employ antialiasing or 3D separators when
rendering the wheel.

[059] - Wiclear 0.8.2
  by David Jobet (http://freshmeat.net/users/djobet/)

About: Wiclear aims to provide a simple, small, and accessible wiki. It
supports the XHTML and CSS W3C specifications. There is a simple install
program and an admin panel. All content is classified via a tree-like
structure. The wiki in itself is easily themeable (same capabilities as
dotclear), is multilingual, commentable, and supports history, diffs, and
editions. There are several types of users: admins, moderators, and simple
users. Moderators and admins can edit ACLs to reduce the number of people
allowed to modify a particular page. They can remove comments or
particular version of the content. Admins can edit/delete users, create
groups, edit them, set global rights (anonymous post, anonymous comments,
etc.), change themes, etc.

Changes: This release adds bugfixes, better page titles, a wikiblog
installer, and HTML content.

Games/Entertainment

About: Xmame is the X11/Unix port of MAME. MAME is the Multiple Arcade
Machine Emulator, an arcade (coin-op) video game emulator.

Changes: This release incorporated everything from MAME 0.99 and MESS
0.99. The SVGAlib target no longer fails silently under certain conditions
and now handles __svgalib_tty_fd == -1, which allows it to work with newer
releases of SVGAlib. A few man page and documentation updates were made.
