SSL Encrypting Syslog with Stunnel
by Rainer Gerhards (http://www.adiscon.com/en/people/rainer-gerhards.php)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Aug 20th 2005 00:00
In this article, I describe how to encrypt syslog messages on a network.
Encryption is vital to keeping the confidential content of syslog messages
secure. I describe the overall approach and provide a HOWTO to do it with
the help of rsyslogd and stunnel.

Software Development :: Libraries
About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that can help you develop and deploy high-performance
software systems faster and better. ACE is especially useful for systems
that use network and/or inter-process communications and that take
advantage of multithreading. While the ACE source code is free, that's not
the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's wrappers and higher-level
patterns help you develop your software quickly and portably, helping you
to complete your projects on time and within budget.
Changes: The TAO_RefCountServantBase class in the Portable Server Library
now counts references correctly. Significant TAO IDL skeleton refactoring
was undertaken.

support for additional platforms can be added with minimal or no changes
to the rest of the code.

Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX
About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.
Changes: An option for capturing full names has been added. This will
permit writing references according to some information and social
sciences bibliographic styles. Editor names are treated and processed
consistently, as are author names. Unicode to LaTeX conversion has been
extended to all fields. Some issues regarding --bibedit command line
behavior has been addressed.

About: DiffJ is a commandline application that compares Java files based
on content, not whitespace, comments, or reordering of types, methods, or
fields. Its output is based on the Unix program diff, and it also has a
"brief" output format for a concise summary of what changed. It can work
on directories recursively, looking for matching filenames, like "diff -r

About: sl is a yet another generic linked list library. Instead of
container nodes with pointers to your data, it uses a pointer to the next
item directly in the data structure you want to create lists (or stacks)

Information Management
About: Tellico is a collection manager for KDE. It includes default
collections for books, bibliographies, comic books, videos, music, coins,

the visible entries by definable criteria. Full customization for printing
is possible through editing the default XSLT file. It can import CSV,
Bibtex, Bibtexml, RIS, and MODS and export CSV, HTML, Bibtex, Bibtexml,
and PilotDB. Entries may be imported directly from Amazon.com, imdb.com,
or using any z39.50 bibliographic server.
Changes: Fixes were made to prevent crashing when closing the Collection
Fields dialog and for incorrect rating widget numbering. Compilation fixes
were added for 64-bit systems and when not using libkcddb. The
documentation was updated and the HTML export and Group Summary reports
were improved. Audio file metadata album matching is now case-insensitive.
The Dutch and Finnish translations were updated.

[043] - VIF 0.7.0
by aktion-hip (http://freshmeat.net/users/aktionhip/)
Sat, Aug 20th 2005 03:26
Information Management
About: The VIF application is a Web-based virtual discussion forum. It
aims to implement a specific discussion model that supports goal oriented
discussions of complex matters. This discussion model builds on structured
discussion threads, integrated quality control, and well defined group
boundaries.
Changes: This release added a guest depth feature where questions are
visible for guests (i.e. unauthenticated users) only up to a specified
depth. The view of discussion groups was improved. Features for assigning
questions an 'answered' status and reopening them were added. An encoding
bug caused by the input of umlauts into forms was fixed by adding
accept-charset="ISO-8859-1, ISO-8859-15" to each form.

[044] - wview Vantage Pro Weather System 1.7.2
by Mark Teel (http://freshmeat.net/users/mteel/)
Sat, Aug 20th 2005 13:04
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering
About: wview is an application that controls a Davis Vantage Pro or
Vantage Pro2 weather station console to retrieve archive records and
current conditions. Archive records may optionally be stored in a
relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a user-defined interval,
wview will use the archive history and current conditions to generate
weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages based on configurable
HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data loggers, as well as
connectivity with a terminal server or serial server via TCP sockets.
Changes: New HTML tags were added for day/month/year, high
THSW/Radiation/UV, and time of day for the daily highs. The build
environment was updated for Mac OS X PostgreSQL builds.
wview-Quick-Start-MacOSX.html was updated. The new HTML tags moonPhase,
airDensity, airDensityUnit, cumulusBase, and cumulusBaseUnit were added. A
new diagnostic chart was added to display the percentage of good packets
received from the VP ISS for each archive interval. Day/Month/Year
precipitation dials which combine rain and ET for a "net precipitation"
measurement were added.

[046] - Z88Transfer 2.0
by Raster (http://freshmeat.net/users/scostas/)
Sat, Aug 20th 2005 12:42
Communications
System :: Archiving
System :: Emulators
About: Z88Transfer is a transfer utility written with Python and PyGTK
that allows a Linux machine to send and receive files from Z88 computers
(created in 1987 by Sir Clive Sinclair in his last computer company,
Cambridge Computers). Z88transfer supports IMP-EXPORT and PCLINK-II
protocols and, in theory, the EAZYLINK protocol (but this hasn't been
tested).
Changes: This version has a new import-export filter that automagically
transforms Abiword files into PipeDream files (and vice-versa) during the
transfer itself, allowing fully transparent operation. It also allows
emulation of non-English characters with English ROMs and keyboards. Some
small bugfixes were made.
