[004] - Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) Library for PHP 1.0
  by Dmitry Sheiko (http://freshmeat.net/users/sheiko/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 14:40

Software Development

About: This package can be used to implement aspect oriented programming
(AOP) by executing the code of classes that enable orthogonal aspects at
run- time. The intention is to provide a means to implement orthogonal
aspects in separate classes that may be an interesting add to the
application, like logging, caching, transaction control, etc., without
affecting the main business logic. The package provides base classes for
implementing defining point cuts where the code of an advice class is
called to implement actions of the orthogonal aspects that an application
may need to enable.

[005] - BalanceNG 1.398
  by Thomas Obermair (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomasobermair/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 10:28

Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge". It supports "all service load
balancing" based on client IP address which allows almost any protocol to
be supported.

Changes: The error handling of configuration file errors has been
improved: errors are now reported to syslog (and internal log) at startup,
the interactive session displays a warning in that case, error messages are
shown interactively with "show log", and the messages reference the
affected line numbers in /etc/bng.conf. The manual has been updated to
1.398.0.

[010] - cpphs 1.0
  by Malcolm Wallace (http://freshmeat.net/users/MalcolmWallace/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 10:28

Software Development :: Pre-processors

About: cpphs is a more liberal re-implementation of cpp, the C
pre-processor, in Haskell. The C pre-processor is widely used in Haskell
source code, but a true cpp is often unavailable on some systems (such as
native Windows), and the common cpp provided by the gcc 3.x series has
become more strictly tied to the C language, in subtle ways that are
incompatible with Haskell's syntax. This includes problems with, for
instance, string gaps, and prime characters in identifiers. This project
provides a robust alternative to cpp that is more compatible with Haskell
and can be distributed with compilers.

Changes: This release now includes a compatibility script for command line
arguments to match the original cpp. There are several minor bugfixes, e.g.
quotes around replacements for special macros like __FILE__, etc.
Interaction with preprocessors like hsc2hs is also improved: if they allow
non-cpp directives like #def, these are now passed through to the output
with a warning to stderr, rather than halting with an error. Likewise, a
#! line in a shell script is now ignored.

[012] - Crossroads Load Balancer 0.09
  by Karel Kubat (http://freshmeat.net/users/karelk/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 02:56

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking

About: Crossroads is a load balance and failover utility for TCP-based
services. It is a daemon program running in userspace and features
extensive configurability, polling of backends using "wakeup calls",
detailed status reporting, "hooks" for special actions when backend calls
fail, and more. It is service-independent; it is usable for HTTP(S), SSH,
SMTP, DNS, etc.

Changes: Warnings about backend connections are now avoided in the wakeup
handler, avoid problems with flooding the system log. A "restart"
command-line action was implemented and the documentation was updated.

[013] - Database Bean Generator 2.0.4
  by jespo (http://freshmeat.net/users/jespo2005/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 14:01

Database
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Generator is a command line application to facilitate the
construction of small applications that need some database objects. It
isn't a replacement for complex object persistence solutions, like
hibernate or TopLink, but it covers a different target: the little Java
Web applications that don't use sophisticated persistence options.
Generator invocation is simple: just type java -jar generator.jar -xml,
where the config file is an XML config file with the definitions to
connect to the database and generate the bean classes. You can also use
the Ant task.

Changes: Minor bugfixes, including some issues with special characters and
the addition of a new fast replaceString function for jdk <= 1.3.1.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Divmod Axiom is an object-relational database backed by SQLite, the
goal of which is to provide an efficient, non-SQL interface to an existing
relational database manager. It provides support for common Twisted
practices: an Axiom store is also a Twisted IServiceCollection provider,
and an implementation of Twisted's IRealm interface is provided. It makes
heavy use of plugins and includes a wall-clock scheduler.

Changes: The initial release includes support for user management, event
scheduling, in-database any-references, tagging, and plugins. An
'axiomatic' command line tool was included for inspecting and manipulating

About: GRUB for DOS is a build of the GNU GRUB boot manager for DOS, and
can be run under real mode DOS. It also has many new features. For
example, it can be booted through BOOT.INI of Windows (grldr) and kexec of
Linux (grub.exe). The disk emulation feature is another enhancement over
GNU GRUB, and can be used to run legacy DOS/Windows9x systems with floppy
or hard disk images.

Changes: A RAM disk device (rd) was added, which is typically use for the
initrd image. Many new command-line options were added to bootlace.com for
installing GRLDR boot records onto the boot sector of a floppy. A few bugs
with "map --mem" were fixed along with a bug with finding GRLDR in NTFS
that may have caused machines to hang when there was no NTFS boot record
in the boot area of the partition.

[027] - Haskell FFI Binding Modules Generator 1.0pl2
  by Dmitry Golubovsky (http://freshmeat.net/users/dmg/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 00:13

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Haskell FFI Binding Modules Generator (HSFFIG) is a tool that takes
a C library include file (.h) and generates Haskell Foreign Functions
Interface import declarations for all functions, #define's (where
possible), enumerations, and structures/unions (to access their members).
It is assumed that GNU C Compiler and Preprocessor are used.
Auto-generated Haskell modules may be imported into an application to get
access to the foreign library's functions and variables.

Changes: Correct support for C arrays was added. Arrays of any dimension
are now represented as pointers to their element type (in fact, the first
element, with all zero indices). For structure members that are arrays, an
interface was provided for obtaining array dimensions as a list of
integers. Code handling structures were refactored. Information about each
structure type and structure members is now represented as a Data
structure, which is one step towards future versions where arbitrary
manipulation by the collection of C declarations will be allowed.

[032] - ivata masks 1.0-alpha1
  by Colin MacLeod (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinmacleod/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 02:54

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: ivata masks is a library of routines developed in Java/JSP/Struts
that automatically create masks and lists based on Java reflection and
settings specified in XML, which saves a huge amount of time. Rather than
developing input screens and lists for each value object class, you need
to define just two screens - one for lists, the other for input masks. An
XML file defines which fields should be displayed or filtered out in each,
and the library automatically interrogates the value object classes to
discover which fields are available for display. Struts messages automate
the field labels based on the field name as a key.

Changes: This release adds new features and makes the libraries generally
easier to extend. Debug logging was improvied throughout the libraries by
using log4j. Maven compatibility was upgraded to version 1.1 (older
versions no longer work). New field handing for password and long
timestamp fields was implemented. Support for a client session scope was
added. Filter and listener interfaces on the query persistence interface
make it easier to implement flexible user rights systems.

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: JayOS is a live CD OS distribution based on Linux From Scratch. It
aims to be a stable base for those who want to customize their own x86 or
PowerPC-based distribution, but is also intended for use as a
non-intrusive mobile workstation environment. It features Linux 2.6
kernel, unionfs, filesystem encryption, many network security tools, UML,
and QEMU. Also included is standard desktop software. JayOS separates
itself from other live CDs by integrating filesystem encryption for a more
secure mobile environment.

Changes: The OS is now distributed as an ISO within an ISO. The LiveCD ISO
uses QEMU as a "boot loader" to boot jlfs.iso, the natively bootable image.
A new "make winiso" build target was added. A bug in /root/bin/mklo that
wouldn't allow the creation of non-encrypted filesystems was fixed along
with a bug in initial RAM disk creation that neglected to create hard

  by Kate Ward (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfsetse/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 01:58

System :: Logging

About: log4sh is a logging framework for shell scripts that works similar
to the other wonderful logging products available from the Apache Software
Foundataion (eg. log4j, log4perl). Although not as powerful as the others,
it can make the task of adding advanced logging to shell scripts easier,
and has much more power than just using simple "echo" commands throughout.
In addition, it can be configured from a properties file so that scripts in
a production environment do not need to be altered to change the amount of
logging they produce.

Changes: The API was made more intuitive and performance improvements were
made. Many appender functions were renamed to match their purpose better
(although the old function names still work). Work was also started on
putting more documentation into the code so that API documentation can be
generated automatically, but it is far from finished. Some bugs were

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts are included for remote services (DNS, HTTP, IMAP2,
IMAP3, POP3, samba, SMTP, and SNMP) and local systems (disk space, load,
CPU temperature, fan speed, free memory, print queue size and activity,
processes, RAID status, shells, log file events (logins, restarts, and
brute force attacks), and mail queue).

multiple checks on one single log file, which was impossible before.

[075] - Stunnix Perl Web Server 2.0
  by Stunnix (http://freshmeat.net/users/stunnix/)
  Tue, Oct 18th 2005 10:32

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Stunnix Perl Web Server is an advanced Web server developed for
writing browser-based applications and database-driven catalogues or
presentations that reside on CDROM or DVD, internally implemented as
Perl-driven or PHP-driven Web sites that store data in a database also
located on CDROM. It produces a single CD that works on Windows, Mac OS X,
and Linux/x86, without requiring any additional software on the user's
computer. All an author needs to do to build a cross-platform
browser-based application or CDROM is to copy scripts to their proper
directories. HTML::Mason and mod_perl-like execution modes are supported
for Perl-driven Web sites.

Changes: When run from a CD-ROM mounted with the 'noexec' flag, the user
is warned that PHP and MySQL won't work from CD-ROM, and is advised to
copy the entire CD-ROM to the hard disk and run the Web server from there.
Support for PHP scripts encoded with Zend Encoder was added for all
platforms. Support for SQLite for PHP was added for all platforms. Showing
a splash screen is now supported on Windows during Web server startup.
Stability on Windows was improved. Quick Start GUIDE and other docs were
added.

About: The Data Language (TDL) is an Interactive Data Language-compatible
incremental compiler. Like Matlab, it is intended for scientific data
processing and visualization. It has a FORTRAN-like syntax, supports
objects, and has powerful array operations.

Changes: This version is much faster. The actual increase in speed depends
upon several factors like program structure, called routines, processor,
and compiler used, but up to 60% seems to not be unrealistic. Some new
important subroutines were implemented, including CREATE_STRUCT, CONTOUR,
LAGUERRE, and STRCMP. SYSTIME now has sub-millisecond resolution. For the
FFT procedure, the FFTW library can (alternatively) be used, resulting in
about double the execution speed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: Bug WPT-317: when a virtual users encounters an error page and
the subsequent page has a large number of fields that are dependent on the
previous page, the VU will generate an error for each field that cannot be
properly populated. This could be hundreds per page in complex test cases.
This is all fine, but the GUI displays an error dialog for each error --
effectively hanging the UI unless the user is patient enough to click "ok"
hundreds of times. This has been fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: WxLib is a widely resuable C++ library that converts many
facilities that are found in the standard C library into a form that is
more appropriate for use in a C++ context. The library wraps functions for
dealing with threads, files, FIFOs, serial I/O, sockets, and directories.
It focuses on the correct use of C++ functions, and especially on the
correct use of error handling mechanisms.

Changes: _strnum, _mkstr, and _catstr were fixed. Member drain was removed
from several classes and a supplement was added.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Xplosion is a Web site engine whose purpose is to be as simple as
possible while providing Web developers with easy installation and
building of their own content, design, and application logic. It avoids
complexity to make it easier for a Web developer to modify it. It also
avoids mixing the API code with HTML to encourage clean design. This "Yet
Another Engine" tries to innovate by using technologies that are not yet
mainstream in Web development, like the PEAR Flexy Template engine.

Changes: API documentation was added, as well as some minor fixes for
correcting XHTML validity errors. A demo site is also available.
