Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing

About: Adcd is a text mode CD player for GNU/Linux. It features all the
functions expected in a compact disc player, including playing selected
tracks, random playing, and continuous playing. It may be used in
interactive (full screen) or non-interactive (command line) modes.

Changes: Non-interactive mode has been added. The files 'configure' and
'Makefile.in' have been added for a GNU type build (configure, make, and
make install).

[002] - AirWave Management Platform 4.0
  by Jason Luther (http://freshmeat.net/users/jasonluther/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 16:29

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The AirWave Management Platform (AMP) is server software which
provides a Web-based UI that gives you a single point of intelligent
control for remotely monitoring and configuring multi-vendor wireless
access points and other network devices. The AMP software offers device
discovery, centralized policy definition, automated configuration
management, firmware management, real-time monitoring, diagnostics, and
reporting. AMP supports hardware from leading enterprise-grade vendors.

Changes: This major update includes the release of the VisualRF
visualization module, support for multi-architecture WLANs (standalone and
thin APs), additional management support for LANCOM, Nomadix, and Cisco
Airespace devices, enhanced wireline rogue AP detection with the RAPIDS
module, and automated RF channel management.

[003] - And-httpd 0.99.4
  by Nevyn (http://freshmeat.net/users/nevyn/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 01:31

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: And-httpd is an HTTP server that maps URLs to files. In other
words, in can take an incoming URL and map it to a file in a number of
ways (for example, according to content type or language). It cannot do
CGI or other kinds of code execution. It cannot even dynamically create
directory listings (although it comes with external tools to do so). It
currently has a $500 "security guarantee" against remote attacks.

Changes: Named matches and ability to add matches at positions other than
the end of the match list were added. The ability to use user home
directories in the configuration file paths was added. O_NOATIME support
was added. More checking is done on requests, and some minor bugfixes were
made. Cron jobs were added to the auto gzip content. Some more
documentation was written.

[004] - antispyd 0.0.7
  by janium (http://freshmeat.net/users/jnm42/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 08:11

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security

About: Antispyd is an HTTP/HTTPS threat filtering proxy server. The main
characteristic of this project is the modularity of his conception. The
program is organized around an HTTP/HTTPS gateway service and a set of
filters that can be enabled or disabled, and are all configurable with a
single configuration file. Current filters are: URL filtering, content
filtering, content-type filtering, cookie removal, pop-up removal, shell
code attack blocking, Web traffic anonymizing, and a signature-based
filtering engine. All filtering is done on the fly, without blocking
downloads in any case. It uses only POSIX primitives and is built with
autotools, and was created with security in mind.

Changes: This release provides two new features: Domain White-List
configuration and BLOCK_SIZE filter. The BLOCK_SIZE filter provides the
ability to control incoming and outgoing traffic for desired MIME types
based on HTTP message size. The control configuration can be different for
incoming and outgoing traffic. This monitoring is performed with two
independent techniques: "HTTP header checking" and "HTTP flow tracking".
Moreover, the filter management software architecture has been cleaned up.

About: AvantSlash allows you to read Slashdot on your Palm or WinCE
device (through AvantGo or another PDA Web browser) or via a WAP enabled
mobile phones. It provides you with a cleaner version of the content and
can even clean up the linked articles for easier reading on your device.

Changes: This release fixes a bug which meant that articles that were not
associated with a specific Slashdot section were not being displayed on
the main page.

[006] - BackupMX/Store&Forward 0.1.0
  by Graham Toal (http://freshmeat.net/users/gtoal/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 00:36

Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: BackupMX consists of two programs, 'Store' and 'Forward'. Store
accepts SMTP connections, takes all mail given to it, and stores it in a
file. Forward takes that file and forwards it over SMTP to a fixed
destination. This is code for integrating into your own projects rather
than using as is. It is suitable for creating a disaster-recovery mail
handler, but would also make a good basis for a spam filter, a tarpit, a
honeypot, or a greylist filter. It is written in simple C, and has no
external dependencies such as libsmtp.

System :: Networking

About: Balance is a simple but powerful generic TCP proxy with round-robin
load balancing and failover mechanisms. Its behaviour can be controlled at
runtime using a simple command line syntax.

Changes: A general code cleanup has been performed. An interface to MRTG
has been added, introducing the interactive commands "mrtg-bytes" and
"mrtg-conns". MRTG is able to collect statistical data by invoking these
commands calling balance with the -c option (e.g. balance -i 80 -c

About: Bless is a fast and customizable hex editor written in GTK#. It
efficiently handles very large files and supports multiple undo-redo
actions. There are also plans for the addition of a Lua-based scripting
language for binary file manipulation.

Changes: In this release, Bless has been upgraded to Gtk# 2 (Gtk+ 2.4).
The three most important new features are a toolbar, the ability to
highlight patterns matching the current selection, and the ability to open
files by dragging and dropping them into Bless. There have also been many
bugfixes and usability improvements. Changes from Bless 0.4.0-rc1 include
fixes related to file opening and source code building, the ability to
open multiple files using the File Open dialog, and a sample Bless .spec
file for packagers.

  by Campware (http://freshmeat.net/users/campware/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 11:08

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Campsite is a multilingual content management system (CMS) for news
Web sites. Campsite's user interface was built with the end user
(journalist, editor, publisher) in mind, and it can be configured to suit
different profiles of end users. Campsite follows the print-newspaper
publishing paradigm, so it structures sites by default as Publications >
Issues > Sections > Articles. Campsite works best for medium-to-large-size
online news publications, but it is capable of handling nimbler sites too.

Changes: The template language now allows the use of "article publish
date", and the manual now includes screenshots of all administration
tasks. This release fixes installation problems on Debian 3.1, bugs that
occurred when duplicating articles, and problems in the sample templates.

ccHost is what is used for the infamous Creative Commons CC Mixter project
which supports legal media sharing and remixing.

Changes: New submission forms were added to show up in the throttle rules.
Verification errors are caught when a file has no extension. The download
button was fixed to review the topic header. A topic count that got out of
sync when a topic was deleted was fixed. The forum feed button is checked
for and displayed. The site is now put into the email subject when
generating email for whitelisting. A next/prev button was added for the
activity log. Drifting of the download popup menu on every click in IE was
fixed. The cc favicon.ico was removed.

About: Comix is a comic book viewer. It reads zip, rar, tar, tar.gz, and
tar.bz2 archives (often called .cbz, .cbr and .cbt) as well as normal
image files.

Changes: The viewed page(s) can now be dragged around by pressing the
mouse button and moving the cursor. A new option was added to cache the
next page for faster forward page flipping. Comix now handles manipulation
of already loaded images (resizing, changing scaling technique, etc.) more
efficiently due to less disk IO. A bug that caused saved options to not be

  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 13:25

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: The "install bucket" mechanism for determining when troves can
co-exist was replaced with a more flexible and complete "path hash"
mechanism. With this new mechanism, troves that have no file conflicts can
always be installed side-by-side on the same system. Conary is also much
more verbose when doing updates.

user-interface utilities. Mantissa is the deployment target: it can serve
an application over several protocols; HTTP is one of those protocols, but
HTTP isn't treated specially by the software.

Changes: The focus of this Mantissa release is support for the Web: there
are themes, conventions for template lookup, support for Nevow LivePage,
and a framework into which Web interfaces to applications can be dropped.
A major feature is the ability to deploy otherwise unrelated applications
into the same server, provide access to them using the same user accounts,
have them cooperate to display elements of the page which each require, and
give the user an organized view onto them.

About: EasyBMP is a cross-platform C++ library for reading and writing
Windows bitmap (BMP) files. Designed for ease of use, it requires no
installation or external libraries, is small in size, well-documented, and
is simple enough for the novice programmer to start in just minutes.

Changes: Some minor feature enhancements were added. First, wherever
functions had char* as an input, it was replaced with const char*. This
should improve the compatibility of EasyBMP with other software and is
also a good programming practice. Many major functions, such as
BMP::ReadFromFile() and BMP::WriteToFile(), now return true or false to
indicate success or failure instead of returning void.

[039] - Hilbert II 0.01.08
  by m31 (http://freshmeat.net/users/m31/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 11:21

Documentation
Education
Internet

About: The Goal of Hilbert II, which is in the tradition of Hilbert's
program, is the creation of a system that enables a working mathematician
to put theorems and proofs (in the formal language of predicate calculus)
into it. These proofs are automatically verified by a proof checker.
Because this system is not centrally administered and enables references
to any location on the Internet, a world wide mathematical knowledge base
could be built. Any proof of a theorem in this "mathematical web" could be
drilled down to the very elementary rules and axioms. To make it more than
a huge number of logical correct formulas, it also contains information in
"common mathematical language". Think of an incredible number of
mathematical textbooks with hyperlinks, and each of its proofs could be
verified by *Hilbert II*. For each theorem, the dependency of other
propositions, definitions, and axioms could be easily derived.

Changes: The GUI shows errors now in a text area with detailed error
position information; clicking the text area opens a new editor window
with the qedeq file and marked error position. The XSD was expanded: now
the element "EXISTSU" proposes the existence of a unique individuum. There
is an additional script file: beginning of axiomatic set theory
(Morse-Kelley), which includes a German and English version and contains
the first two set theoretic axioms. Two more sample error files are
included.

  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 08:38

System :: Networking

About: ipsvd is a set of Internet protocol service daemons for TCP/IP and
UDP/IP. A daemon waits for incoming connections on a socket; for new
connections, it conditionally runs an arbitrary program to handle the
connection. The daemons can be told to read and follow pre-defined
instructions on how to handle incoming connections; based on the client's
IP address or hostname, they can run different programs, set a different
environment, deny a connection, or set a per host concurrency limit. On
Linux the network connection optionally can be encrypted using SSL3. ipsvd
can be used to run services usually run by inetd or tcpserver. Normally the
daemons are run by a supervisor process, such as runsv from the runit
package, or daemontools' supervise.

and the reasonable defaults which allow a quick start. The actual burning
is done by the command line utilities cdrecord, cdrdao, and growisofs.

Changes: The progressbar in the file view was fixed. It is possible to add
the "New Data DVD Project" button to the welcome window again. Problems
with unreadable items when using a non-standard color scheme were fixed.
The permissions on cdrecord versions >= 2.01.01a02 are now properly set.
The "Disabled start button in Copy dialog" bug was fixed. A sector size of
2048 is always used when only creating an image in CD Copy. This means that
extracted ISO images from CDs with non-Mode1 tracks are usable again.
Directory permissions and user/group ID are preserved in data projects

About: NatStat is a network monitoring tool designed to help paranoid
users and network administrators that want to monitor their iptables
settings live. It gathers information from iptables, calculates speeds on
the selected (or all available) rules, and shows it in a GUI (ncurses/Qt).
The helper application natdump can dump out the speeds on various or all
rules and give it to you in plain text.

Changes: All windows are now plugins, which means that it's easy to add,
remove, and manage them. The window handling system has gone through a
complete rewrite. Minor bugfixes were made here and there. stderr is now
redirected to /var/log/natstat (or predefined).

[061] - OpenPKG 2.5
  by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 04:49

About: OpenPKG is a flexible and powerful software packaging facility that
eases installation and administration of Unix software across several
platforms. Consolidating different vendor approaches into a unified
architecture, it assists in administration of large networks previously
complicated by nonconformant systems. It uses RPM to provide an additional
system layer on top of the operating system. It is fully self-contained (no
RPM pre-installation is required), installs itself by means of a tricky
bootstrapping procedure with minimal operating system intrusion, and
supports multiple installation instances.

Changes: This release consists of 579 selected packages which include the
latest versions of all popular Unix server software. All software is
carefully packaged for easy deployment on 19 different Unix platforms. The
major technical efforts for this release were spent on migrating to the GNU
Compiler Collection (GCC) version 4.0 and further improving the Solaris 10
support and adding full support for the new FreeBSD 6.0 and SUSE 10.0
platforms.

contents, phpLogCon can process syslog messages, Windows event log entries
and some more exotic things. It works together with rsyslogd, an enhanced
syslog deamon but can also team up with any other application capable of
writing to a database.

[072] - rsyslog 1.11.1 (Development)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 11:13

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers
support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195, writing to MySQL
databases, fully configurable output formats (including great timestamps),
and the ability to filter on any part of the syslog message. It is designed
as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus able to work with the
same config file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the config file, but in general, this should be fairly easy.

Changes: This release supports BSD-style program and hostname blocks. This
facilitates rsyslogd usage in multi-host environments and when migrating
from stock BSD syslogd. It is also helpful for any complex logging needs.
The release also contains some minor feature enhancements (like the
ability to specify the listen port in rfc3195d), as well bugfixes and
stability updates.

About: Sylpheed is a GTK+ based, lightweight, and fast email client.
Almost all commands are accessible with the keyboard. It also has many
features such as multiple accounts, POP3/APOP support, thread display, and
multipart MIME. One of Sylpheed's future goals is to be fully
internationalized. The messages are managed in the MH format, so you'll be
able to use it together with another mailer that uses the MH format.

Changes: A directory with multiple hierarchy can be specified when
creating a new mailbox. Error messages are now output to the log window
and the log file. The "Create filter rule" menu was brought back in the
context menu. Support for environment-dependent Japanese characters was
enhanced. The IMAP4 parser was fixed so that it can handle literals in
responses. A bug that caused crashes on receive if Date header has
abnormal time was fixed. Many improvements for Win32 support were made.

the "End game" mode. The rarest pieces are requested first. On Mac OS X, a
universal binary for either PPC or x86 was added, the problem in which
progress increases every time the user paused and then resumed was fixed,
the occasional crash at exit was fixed, a cleaner icon was added, all
sizes are shown in human readable form, and downloading continues in the
background when the window is closed.

[087] - Twisted Names 0.2.0
  by Jp Calderone (http://freshmeat.net/users/kuran/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 23:08

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Twisted Names is both a domain name server as well as a client
resolver library. It comes with an "out of the box" nameserver that can
read most BIND-syntax zone files as well as a simple Python-based
configuration format. It can act as an authoritative server, perform zone
transfers from a master to act as a secondary, act as a caching
nameserver, or any combination of these. The client resolver library
provides functions for querying all commonly used record types as well as
a replacement for the blocking gethostbyname() function provided by the
Python stdlib socket module.

Changes: In this bugfix release, several uses of deprecated APIs were
removed and two cases where TCP connections were left open far too long
were fixed.

About: uni2ascii and ascii2uni convert between UTF-8 Unicode and more than
a dozen 7-bit ASCII equivalents including: hexadecimal and decimal HTML
numeric character references, \u-escapes, standard hexadecimal, raw
hexadecimal, and RFC2396 URI format. Such ASCII equivalents are
encountered in a variety of circumstances, such as when Unicode text is
included in program source, when entering text into Web programs that can
handle the Unicode character set but are not 8-bit safe, and when
debugging.

Changes: The code was cleaned up. autoconf is now used.

About: UniPKG (Universal PaCkaGe manager) is a modular package manager. It
supports the RPM, DEB, and Slackware TGZ package formats and doesn't depend
of any distribution-specific tools. It is completely self-sufficient, as
formats such as cpio were reimplemented.

Changes: A segfault which occurred when removing a package with 0 files
was fixed. A warning on removal when not necessary (ensurermdir turned on)
was removed. Only packages with status "install ok installed" are exported
out of the Debian database. The shared libraries were renamed to make them
begin with "lib", so ldconfig notices them.

About: The Useful Traffic Accounting Dragon is a traffic accounting tool
that actually gives useful information about traffic instead of just
counting incoming/outgoing packets. It accounts for traffic by user,
program, and timestamp.

Changes: A pretty stupid mistake was fixed which caused all traffic to be
accounted on one IP address, regardless of where it came from (loopback,
ppp, eth, whatever). The use of a config file for the data collector was
added. Small changes were made to the Web frontend.

[096] - XCC 0.5.1
  by Evgeny Stambulchik (http://freshmeat.net/users/fnevgeny/)
  Wed, Oct 19th 2005 16:29

Software Development :: Code Generators
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XCC is a tool for building XML format parsers. One way to describe
what XCC does is by analogy with a generic parser generator, e.g. yacc or
bison. Yacc needs a lexical analyzer to function properly, and that
lexical analyzer is usually built with (f)lex. In the XML world, there are
a few packages which fill in the role of lex (expat and libxml are the most
known), but the high-level grammar parsing is usually done by a
hand-written code; writing such a parser is a tedious and error-prone
task. XCC was created to help developers in writing reliable
easy-to-understood parsers for handling complex XML-based grammars.

Changes: This release adds #line directives to the generated source for
easier debugging. It honours DESTDIR during installation. Minor bugs have
been fixed.
