[001] - Amber for Parrot 0.3.0
  by Roger Browne (http://freshmeat.net/users/eiffel/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 08:28

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Amber for Parrot is an object-oriented scripting language for the
Parrot virtual machine. It combines the traditional advantages of
scripting languages with support for software correctness and large-scale
software engineering. Amber for Parrot has syntax and semantics somewhere
between those of Eiffel and Ruby.

Changes: This release adds "slurpy" routines that can take variable
numbers of arguments. "include" and "load" keywords were added, which
enable functionality to be loaded from external files. There's a new
kernel class to define character classes. Many minor enhancements and
bugfixes were done.

  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 23:06

Internet
Security
System :: Diagnostics

About: dietsniff is a tiny tool for analyzing traffic on a network. It's
not intended to replace well-known tools like tcpdump or ethereal. It's
intended for the case when a small and especially static sniffer is
required. Accordingly, it's also by far not that powerful, and is also
bound to Linux as a platform.

Changes: The most important change so far is the introduction of
pcap-logs, which makes it possible to gather data using dietsniff and
analyze them using more featureful utilities like Ethereal.

[007] - FunkLoad 1.2.0
  by Nuxeo (Zope Service Provider) (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuxeo/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 07:51

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing

About: FunkLoad is a functional and load Web tester whose main use cases
are functional testing of Web projects (and thus regression testing as
well), performance testing, load testing (such as volume testing or
longevity testing), and stress testing. It can also be used to write Web
agents to script any Web repetitive task, like checking whether a site is
alive.

Changes: Credential and Monitor services have been refactored. They are
now true Unix daemon services. Controllers are now written in pure Python
(no more bash scripts). Setuptools is used instead of distutils, so
installing FunkLoad is now done just with "sudo easy_install funkload".
The demo examples were moved into the egg (just type "fl-install-demo" to
extract the demo folder). Several bugs have been fixed.

creating GUI oriented client-server applications. It allows the developer
to just write code using the Qt programming style for the server side and
forget about the client side.

Changes: Updated versions of GSpacerItem, GPalette, GColor, and GBrush
were added. Modifications were made to GDialog, GGridLayout, and
GBoxLayout. New features with server-side and client-side signals and
slots were implemented.

System :: Systems Administration

About: Cfengine is a tool for setting up and maintaining BSD and
System-5-like operating system optionally attached to a TCP/IP network.
You can think of cfengine as a very high level language, much higher level
than Perl or shell: a single statement can result in many hundreds of
operations being performed on multiple hosts. Cfengine is good at
performing a lot of common system administration tasks, and allows you to
build on its strengths with your own scripts. You can also use it as a
netwide front-end for `cron'.

Changes: This release includes various bugfixes and adds a new "cfetool"
program, based on cfenvd.

  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 10:57

Text Processing :: Filters

About: GNU m4 is an implementation of the traditional Unix macro
processor. It is mostly SVR4 compatible, although it has some extensions
(for example, handling more than 9 positional parameters to macros). GNU
m4 also has built-in functions for including files, running shell
commands, doing arithmetic, etc. Autoconf needs GNU m4 for generating
`configure' scripts, but not for running them.

Changes: Running "./configure --infodir=/usr/share/info" now works
correctly. When any file named on the command line is missing, the program
exits with a status of 1.

Changes: It is now possible to create Tagged PDFs with iText. This is a
first step towards implementing the PDF/A ISO standard. There was also
some work done on the HtmlWorker to convert portions of HTML to PDF, and a
new Event class was added to facilitate the positioning of form fields. Two
new plug-ins were added to the toolbox: one to reverse the order of the
pages in a PDF; another one to remove "launch" actions from a PDF that can
form a possible security hazard.

  by Michael Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/mebrown/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 11:06

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Diagnostics
System :: Logging

About: Libsmbios is a cross-platform library intended to be used to obtain
common information available in a BIOS. Major features include the ability
to update the BIOS on Dell systems (in conjunction with the Dell RBU Linux
kernel driver), programmatic access to information in SMBIOS tables, and
the ability to obtain Dell system-specific information such as the Dell
System ID number, service tag, and asset tag. Future plans include APIs
for $PIR and mptable mapping. There is a C API for some of the more
commonly used functions, and example binaries to show off most of the
facilities.

Changes: RPM Spec file improvements: this release autodetects xerces and
doxygen, and enables/disables subrpms appropriately. VC.NET 2003 is now a
fully supported compiler. Diagnostic output for certain BIOS bugs on older
systems has been removed; these bugs have workarounds in the code. Support
has been added for the service/asset tag on older Dell Optiplex systems.

Communications
Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: Several minor problems have been fixed, including clustering with
non-persistent requests, the administration panel, CSV export, and CR/LF
translation.

  by xxx (http://freshmeat.net/users/fmxxx/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 01:46

Communications :: Email

About: Mail Avenger is a highly-configurable, MTA-independent SMTP server.
It lets users run messages through filters like ClamAV and SpamAssassin
during SMTP transactions, so the server can reject unwanted email before
assuming responsibility for its delivery. Other unique features include
TCP SYN fingerprint and network route recording, SPF (sender policy
framework) as a general policy language, qmail-style delivery of extension
addresses, validation of sender addresses through SMTP callbacks, mail-bomb
protection, integration with kernel firewalls, and more.

Changes: Several bugs were fixed, including one that could cause a core
dump and another that could prevent /etc/avenger/default from running.
Several feature enhancements were added, including support for multiple
BindAddr directives in asmtpd.conf, the ability to put an ordinary shell
script in .avenger/local* files if they begin with '#!/bin/sh', and a new,
incompatible format for macutil (though the old version is available as
omacutil).

[027] - pxdmcp 1.0
  by Peter Eriksson (http://freshmeat.net/users/pen/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 10:58

About: pxdmcp is a standalone XDMCP client that can be used to request a
remote X Display Manager (such as XDM, GDM, or CDE Dtlogin) to take
control and manage an X server display. This is essentially the same as
what an X server does when started with the "-query" option, but using a
standalone client can be useful in certain circumstances when you don't
have complete control over how the X server is started.

[031] - Smarty PHP template engine 2.6.10
  by Hodglim (http://freshmeat.net/users/Hodglim/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 04:02

Software Development

About: Smarty is a template engine for PHP. Many other template engines
for PHP provide basic variable substitution and dynamic block
functionality. Smarty takes a step further to be a "smart" template
engine, adding features such as configuration files, template functions,
and variable modifiers, and making all of this functionality as easy as
possible to use for both programmers and template designers. Smarty also
converts the templates into PHP scripts, eliminating the need to parse the
templates on every invocation. This makes Smarty extremely scalable and
managable for large application needs.

[035] - TkKasse 2.3
  by Jan Kandziora (http://freshmeat.net/users/tkkasse/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 04:04

Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale

About: TkKasse is a cash desk (POS) software designed especially for use
in restaurants. It runs on ordinary PCs that use cheap standard
components, aside from a POS printer. It supports multiple simultaneous
waiters, bills, and screens. This software has been tested and optimized
on real waiters at a restaurant in Harz Mountains, Germany.

Changes: Configuration is now mostly performed by a Web-based tool rather
than through files. This was done to suit the needs of the average
restaurant boss. The POS printer drivers now allow printing of normal and
double width/height and emphasized/colored characters in one receipt. This
is already used by the built-in receipt templates. Support for cash drawers
connected to a POS printer was added, and this is activated on bill
closing.

[038] - UMLGraph 3.3
  by Diomidis Spinellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/diomidis/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 01:45

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Software Development :: Documentation

About: UMLGraph facilitates the declarative specification and drawing of
UML class and sequence diagrams. One can specify a class design using the
Java syntax complemented by Javadoc tags. Running the UmlGraph doclet on
the specification generates a Graphviz diagram specification that can be
automatically processed to create Postscript, GIF, SVG, JPEG, fig, or
Framemaker drawings. Similarly, sequence diagrams are specified using
declarative pic macros and compiled with the GNU plotutils pic2plot
program into a PNG, PNM, (pseudo) GIF, SVG, AI, Postscript, CGM, FIG, PCL,
HPGL, Regis, or TEK drawing.

Changes: The sequence diagrams now include support for drawing comments
and frames.

[041] - XML::Twig 3.22
  by Michel Rodriguez (http://freshmeat.net/users/michelrodriguez/)
  Thu, Oct 20th 2005 10:59

Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XML::Twig is an XML transformation module. It can be used to
process huge documents while still being in tree mode; is not bound by DOM
or SAX, so it is very Perlish and offers a very comprehensive set of
methods; is simple to use; and DWIMs as much as possible. What it doesn't
offer: full SAX support (it can export SAX, but only reads XML); full
XPath support (unless you use XML::Twig::XPath); nor DOM support. It is
also a big module, and with over 500 methods available it can be a bit
overwhelming. A good starting point is the online tutorial.

Changes: This release fixes a few bugs and adds the parse_html and
parsefile_html methods, which use HTML::TreeBuilder to parse HTML using
XML;;twig.
