[001] - Advanced Bash Scripting Guide 3.7 (Stable)
by M. Leo Cooper (http://freshmeat.net/users/thegrendel/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 10:04
Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration
About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
about 646 print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains over 300 profusely commented illustrative examples, and a number
of tables. Not just a shell scripting tutorial, this book also provides an
introduction to basic programming techniques, such as sorting and
recursion. It is well suited for either individual study or classroom use.
Changes: This routine maintenance update fixes a number of typos and minor
errors, and adds one new example script and quite a bit of other new
material.

[002] - aiParts 0.8.1
by Brian Marshall (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmarshal/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 14:44
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
About: aiParts is a set of C++ classes that implement artificial
intelligence techniques and some tiny sample programs. The classes
implement the pandemonium and emotion AI Patterns, and the High-Hope
technique. A "find the shortest path from A to B" sample program uses
subclasses of the High-Hope classes.
Changes: In this release, the sample shortest-path problem was made larger
and harder. Two non-critical bugs were fixed. Comments and the ability to
debug were improved. The way decision and option hopes change was
modified; this area needs more work.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
About: Antispyd is an HTTP/HTTPS threat filtering proxy server. The main
characteristic of this project is the modularity of his conception. The
program is organized around an HTTP/HTTPS gateway service and a set of
filters that can be enabled or disabled, and are all configurable with a
single configuration file. Current filters are: URL filtering, content
filtering, content-type filtering, cookie removal, pop-up removal, shell
code attack blocking, Web traffic anonymizing, and a signature-based
filtering engine. All filtering is done on the fly, without blocking
downloads in any case. It uses only POSIX primitives and is built with
autotools, and was created with security in mind.
Changes: Interconnection with other HTTP caches and proxies is now
possible via a new configuration directive, "cache_peer". The
"direct_connect" directive was added for fault tolerance. The HTTP engine
was accelerated via the use of the N-Tree algorithm, Fast reconnaissance
has been implemented for HTTP headers.

[009] - BashDiff 1.32
by William Park (http://freshmeat.net/users/opengeometry/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 01:34
Database :: Front-Ends
System :: Shells
About: Bash.Diff is a patch against Bash shell. In the main core, it adds
the following syntax: {a..b}; ${var|...}; then-else-fi to
for/while/until/case statements; try-block with string exception; <<+;
and, <<<<. As builtin, it adds the following: sscanf(3), <string.h>,
<ctype.h> wrappers; array, regex(3), stack, queue operations; GDBM,
SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL database interfaces; HTML template engine
(BASP); Expat XML parser interface; x-y char plot; DOS, CSV, Awk support;
Libwebserver interface; RPN calculator with <math.h> functions; and, GTK+2
interface for GUI dialog.
Changes: This release fixes a typo in argv_from_list() in "subroutines.c"
which caused "vplot" to segfault when data points are given on the command
line. The documentation for "basp" now makes it clear that input is read
from a file or stdin. The builtin "strinterval" was added to extract a
substring with "begin" and "end" patterns. Its usage is similar to the
"match" builtin for regex splitting.

[011] - Chalupa Comic & Content Management System for PHP 0.3
by FrostedMessiah (http://freshmeat.net/users/FrostedMessiah/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 14:56
Artistic Software
Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Chalupa creates an almost-bare-bones utility for Web comic authors
to upload and manage their strips. Load on popular comics can be reduced
by utilising the built-in caching system, or strips can be served directly
from the database. Comics can be stored in categories, sorted by date or a
specified comic order, published, withdrawn, edited, and pretty much
anything else you would expect from a file handling system. Included is
functionality to build a proto-CMS Web site around the core comic
functionality, with additional user and news functionality pre-packaged.
Security is the main focus, with salted user passwords, a hotlinking
disabler (without modifying your Apache/IIS config) and comic access
levels.
Changes: Fixes several flawed templates with bogus default values, adds
more session security, and adds php.ini overrides to assure maximum
compatibility possible. This release finally has an installer, which
removes almost all steps in the previous install guide.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
About: DACS, the Distributed Access Control System, is a flexible
role-based access control system, comprising a set of authentication
methods, an Apache 2 module and suite of CGI programs, and a single
sign-on system, oriented towards controlling access to Web service
requests. It also includes a C/C++ toolkit for building new authentication
and access control functionality into programs. It can help manage access
to Web resources in many situations, whether on just one Web server,
several Web servers at one site, or many Web servers spread across the
Internet.
Changes: This release includes many bugfixes and documentation revisions,
a new dacs_auth_agent web service, replacement of the Store clause with a
simpler VFS configuration directive, a new delegated ACLs feature, and an
assortment of minor improvements.

[013] - delsafe 0.0.72
by psds (http://freshmeat.net/users/psdasilva/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 17:00
About: delsafe is a set of utilities to hopefully allow you to recover
recently deleted files. Basically, when you delete or in certain cases
overwrite a file the original file is moved into a trash can. It does this
by overriding the original unlink, rename, open, and fopen library calls
using the Linux LD_PRELOAD mechanism. Trash cans are placed on top of each
mount point and are accessible by each user directly or through links
placed in the user's home directory. This makes deletion very fast
because, in fact, it is only a renaming. To each filename in the trash can
is appended a time/version stamp.
Changes: A bug that caused Install to fail when psyco was not available
has been fixed. There are some versions of psyco that may cause
segmentation faults with the current version of Python; users should just
uninstall psyco until a new version is available.

by Kathryn H (http://freshmeat.net/users/kah18/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 02:10
Multimedia :: Graphics
Security
Security :: Cryptography
About: DIIT provides a simple tool that can hide a message inside a 24-bit
colour image so that knowing how it was embedded, or performing statistical
analysis, does not make it any easier to find the concealed information. It
also provides a framework for implementing other steganography algorithms
for use in the tool.
Changes: Sample pairs analysis code has been implemented in DIIT. With the
pre-existing RS analysis, this tool allows for accurate steganalysis of
images. Traditional (black and white) laplace graph information can also
now be produced by DIIT. The bugs in some benchmarking formulas have been
corrected.

by Hayati Ayguen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hayguen/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 01:37
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Testing
About: DUMA (Detect Unintended Memory Access) stops your program on the
exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer.
GDB will then display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works
by using the virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of
each buffer: touch that, and your program stops. It can catch formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs. DUMA is a fork of Bruce Perens' Electric
Fence library.
Changes: Semaphores were not initialized correctly, which lead to a hang
when an application was linked with other special libraries. This has been
fixed. The project files for Dev-C++ 4.9.9.2 and GCC 3.3.1 were updated. A
compiler error for Dev-C++ and gcc was fixed. The delete macros were
modified.

About: FreeVMS is an OpenVMS-like operating system which can run on
several architectures like i386, PPC, Alpha, and many others. It consists
of a POSIX kernel and a DCL command line interpreter. The only
architecture currently supported is i386.
Changes: Some libgetef changes and tests were added for event flag and
item code. The JOB_CONTROL process, which can take unsolicited input to a
new terminal, was added. CMUIP telnet to another FreeVMS node (but not
Linux) works now. Bliss compiler 0.114 is now available. Improper use of
event flags for asn_wth_mbx, RMS, XQP, and other I/O was fixed.
exe$sndevmsg was made to work. Postef resetting the event flag was
corrected. The fact that Con$startio did not always reset the UCB write
flag was fixed. A problem in which a used terminal started creprc if it
got unsolicited input was fixed. UDP input no longer makes the stack write

[042] - Mauve 1.2.3
by Aaron Darling (http://freshmeat.net/users/darling/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 01:50
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
About: Mauve constructs global multiple alignments of rearranged genome
sequences. It also provides an interactive display of multi-species
sequence conservation and any annotated features in those genomes. It can
be applied for sequence comparison of both finished or incomplete genomes
in multiple contigs. The resulting display is useful for identifying
functional chromosomal regions under selective pressure and for performing
ortholog assignment based on conserved gene order. Mauve writes global
alignments in eXtended Multi-FastA (XMFA) format, a phylogenetic guide
tree in Newick format, and the location of genomic islands. It identifies
the breakpoints of genomic rearrangement and can provide a reduction of
the genomes to a signed permutation matrix suitable for inference of
rearrangement history.
Changes: The Mauve display now shows multi-part genes and repeat regions.
Similarity plots are colorized to improve mood after long periods of
usage. Mouseover, highlighting, and vertical display shifting have been
fixed for LCB display mode. The GUI interface for setting the minimum seed

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
About: Project Steve Guttenberg is a PHP-driven diary/journal/blogging
application that integrates seamlessly into an existing Web site. It
provides many of the core features (including comments, archives,
searching, RSS 2.0, tags, and trackbacks) and administrative controls (all
Web-based) of other, larger systems, but doesn't use a database, is XHTML
1.0-compliant and its look can be completely customised via CSS. It can
easily be scaled to host several journal sites with a single installation.
Changes: This release improves the way TrackBacks work: instead of
specifying a particular URL to send a TrackBack ping to, you can now
choose to ping all the URLs linked to from your article. TrackBack pings
now also happen much faster. The new "profile" option allows each user to
create their own HTML profile that can be shown at the top of each user
page. TrackBacks and XML-RPC pings now use the same HTTP client code to
reduce duplication. Several new CSS classes have been added. The
documentation has also been updated.

About: prokyon3 is a multithreaded music manager and tag editor. It can
access MP3, Ogg, and FLAC files on hard disk, CDROM, SMB, and NFS. Files
can be played using XMMS or other players. The file view is customizable
and favorite artists are supported. prokyon3 also offers an editor for ID3
and Ogg tags and has been designed to support tagging large quantities of
files.
Changes: The dependency on the MySQL client library, which caused strange
errors, has been removed. The MySQL embedded server wizard and startup
code have been rewritten. The dependency on xmlwrapp has been removed. The
musicextras feature 'album tracks' has been integrated. A bug where the
program would spawn many player instances has been fixed. An auth error
with 0.9.3 and MySQL 4.1 has been fixed. The playlist's size no longer
wraps around at 2 GB. More translations have been added.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT
About: Pustefix is a Web application framework that features an
XML/XSLT-based view generation and a clean MVC architecture of the backend
system. The frontend can be built with the help of XSLT templates and can
include parts containing HTML or XML code that is transformed, creating
the final HTML output. The backend allows for the creation of reusable
handler classes, which can be aggregated into complete pages. These
handlers get their input in the form of real Java objects that are already
assembled and checked against user defined rules by the framework.
Changes: The templates were reworked for error handling. A lot of
templates were marked as deprecated. Real documentation was finally
written for (non-deprecated) templates. StatusCodes and PageMessages are
now handled the same internally. StatusCodes can now be accessed via
static fields in the generated class StatusCodeLib. Security fixes were
made for ServletManager and DerefServer. Webservices error handling was
improved. Lots and lots of bugfixes were made.

Software Development :: Code Generators
Text Processing
About: Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool
for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20
search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in
each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs
is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version and the user's locale. Executed expressions are recorded
in a history list, from which entries may be copied to the regular
expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex regular
expressions to be developed in pieces. It fully supports UTF-8 Unicode as
long as the underlying program does.
Changes: The menu entries for custom character entry charts now survive
changes in locale. The command line option for reading class definitions
has been fixed. Various bugs affecting user-defined named character
classes have been fixed, and the limit on the number of classes that may
be intersected has been eliminated.

[071] - RetroForth 8.2
by Charles Childers (http://freshmeat.net/users/crc2/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 19:21
Software Development :: Assemblers
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: RetroForth is a compact, open source implementation of the
venerable Forth programming language. It can be used under FreeBSD, Linux,
BeOS, Windows, SCO OpenServer, Dex4u, L4Ka::Pistachio, or as an operating
system. It was designed to be easy to learn and use, yet remains powerful
enough to allow useful applications to be developed in it.
Changes: This release brings many cleanups to the code. Word classes have
replaced the two-dictionary model used before, resulting in a more
flexible dictionary model with less redundancy. The interactive part of
the interpreter was rewritten in Forth, and better error handling has been
added. Also new is libretro, which allows C programmers to use RetroForth
to provide scripting capabilities.

Fri, Oct 21st 2005 02:29
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Rsyncrypto allows you to encrypt a file or a directory structure
such that they can later be synchronized to another machine using rsync.
This means that local changes to the plain text file result in local
changes to the cipher text file. rsyncrypto compresses the plain text file
prior to encrypting it with gzip using the "rsyncable" patch, which is
available from the rsync sources.
Changes: This release supports filename encryption in both recursive and
filelist mode. The option name was changed since beta1, and the file map
format is incompatible with that of beta1. At this point, deleting files
in the archive that were deleted outside it is not supported. This beta
should compile and run on all supported platforms.

About: Sanos is a minimalistic 32-bit x86 OS kernel for network server
appliances running on standard PC hardware. The kernel implements basic
operating system services like booting, memory management, thread
scheduling, local and remote file systems, TCP/IP networking, and DLL
loading and linking. A Win32 layer allows the standard HotSpot JVM to run,
essentially providing a JavaOS platform for server applications. It can
also be used as a small kernel for embedded network server applications
written in C. Sanos has a standard POSIX based API and an ANSI Standard C
runtime library.
Changes: User management has been added to the kernel. The dfs file system
now supports file permission and large files. A text editor, telnet daemon,
and FTP daemon were added. The Sanos Visual Studio Wizard now supports
creation of boot images.

Database :: Front-Ends
About: SchemaSpy is a Java-based tool that analyzes the metadata of a
schema in a database and generates a visual representation of it in a
browser-displayable format. It lets you click through the hierarchy of
database tables via child and parent table relationships. Browsing through
relationships can occur though HTML links and/or though the graphical
representation of the relationships. It's also designed to help resolve
the obtuse errors that a database sometimes gives related to failures due
to constraints.
Changes: Support for DB2's Net (Type 4) driver was added. Problems with
extracting information on Oracle indexes were fixed. Due to an Oracle
driver bug, the way that selectIndexesSql gets evaluated was inverted and
the SQL was significantly optimized. Details of the -cp option were added
to the diagnostic messages when unable to load database drivers. Some
minor cosmetic problems were fixed.

by Claus Assmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/casmx/)
Fri, Oct 21st 2005 02:14
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
About: sendmail X is a modularized message transfer system consisting of
five (or more) persistent processes, four of which are multi-threaded. A
central queue manager controls SMTP servers and SMTP clients to receive
and send email messages, an address resolver provides lookups in various
maps (including DNS) for mail routing, and a main control program starts
the others processes and watches over their execution. The queue manager
organizes the flow of messages through the system and provides measures to
avoid overloading the local or remote systems by implementing a central
control instance. sendmail X is simple to configure using a syntax that is
easy to understand and use. It is intended to be used as a secure and
efficient mail gateway. It does not provide any mail content modification
capabilities such as address masquerading.
Changes: A memory leak in the thread library that is used for smar and
qmgr was fixed (as it didn't "detach" threads). Some minor enhancements
were made.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Twisted Mail provides client and server implementations of SMTP,
POP3, and IMAP4. These differentiate themselves from the Python standard
library implementations both by presenting a much higher-level,
easy-to-use interface and in their server components, which allow the
implementation of custom servers for each protocol without dealing with
protocol-level issues. Twisted Mail includes a simple demonstration email
server which accepts messages over SMTP, stores them in a Maildir
arrangement, and can serve them to clients over POP3.
Changes: This is a minor feature enhancement release. The IMAP4 and POP3

About: Yxa is a SIP stack and a set of SIP server applications written in
Erlang/OTP. The SIP stack is RFC3261 compliant. Among the features
implemented are SIP registrar, SIP router, forking, CPL, IPv6, TLS, ENUM,
PSTN gateway access control and modular user database backends. The main
goal of the project is to create a robust SIP server platform that can
scale to tens of thousands of users, be interoperable through standards
compliance, and still have short time-to-market for new features due to
the use of a high level language.
Changes: This is the first production quality release. Only very minor
changes were made since 0.90pre2.
