System :: Software Distribution
Utilities
About: Appctl is a framework for virtually any server software. It
provides a central script called "ctl" which allows you to start, stop,
restart, maintain, or query the current status of an application. It is
meant as a completely generic replacement for application-specific
startup/stop scripts. The project also supplies generic monitoring scripts
for clusters, which can dramatically decrease clustering costs.

About: class.upload.php manages files uploaded using Web forms. If the
uploaded files are images, it can also process the images in several ways.
It can check whether the original file has been uploaded to the correct
temporary location, automatically rename it, check on the MIME type, etc.
It supports resizing images and converting them into a format distinct
from the original. Processing can be repeated differently several times on
the same image/file. The processed files can be renamed, suffixed,
MIME-checked, and copied to a given directory. You can specify what the
class will do if the file already exists. When the processing is done, the
class can delete the original uploaded file.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: EasyBMP is a cross-platform C++ library for reading and writing
Windows bitmap (BMP) files. Designed for ease of use, it requires no
installation or external libraries, is small in size, well-documented, and
is simple enough for the novice programmer to start in just minutes.
Changes: This release focuses on fixing reported bugs, better compiler
support, and a new, freer license. A small bug in BMP::ReadFromFile() that
prevented the proper detection of invalid bit depths was fixed. A previous
fix to support Borland's compiler broke support for MSVC++, so changes
were made to support both compilers. Lastly, to reduce license confusion
when including EasyBMP header files in projects, the license was changed
from the LGPL to the revised BSD license.

Sat, Oct 22nd 2005 15:10
Multimedia :: Graphics
About: The Qt wrapper around the Ghostscript shared library (libqgs)
relieves you from having to use special tricks to use Ghostscript in your
Qt application. You do not have to care about starting it, parsing its
output, or doing weird tricks to receive the rendered pages. This library
features progressive and nonprogressive rendering of pages, error handling
with exceptions support, access to Ghostscript stdio/err messages via
signals and via buffer (if enabled), API documentation, and examples of
use. All work is done on a QImage.
Changes: This is the first released version. In comparison to the
unreleased code, it adds support for progressive rendering, the use of
QImage all the time instead of QPixmap only when the renderer was
finished, better error handling with exception support, good API
documentation, and examples.

[054] - Python milter 0.8.4
by Stuart D. Gathman (http://freshmeat.net/users/stuartdgathman/)
Sat, Oct 22nd 2005 22:16
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: The milter module for Python provides a python interface to
Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on
the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run
with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail
talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter
informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the
milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT,
REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from
sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also
ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.
Changes: Recipients of outgoing email from selected senders are
auto-whitelisted. SPF policy via the sendmail access map (with case
insensitive keys) was fixed. The screener is trained on whitelisted
messages. The optional idx parameter was added to addheader to invoke
smfi_insheader. The progress API is activated when SMFIR_PROGRESS defined.

ID3 and ID3v2 fields (title/artist/album), detailed genre, and weight
(0-9) for the currently-playing track can be edited, and tracks can be
removed from the playlist. For example, a user can select only tracks
with a minimum weight of 5 from the subgenres "Pop - 1970s" and "R&B -

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries
System
About: radlib is a C language library developed to abstract details of
interprocess communications and common Linux/Unix system facilities so
that application developers can concentrate on application solutions. It
encourages developers to use a proven paradigm of event-driven,
asynchronous design. By abstracting interprocess messaging, events,
timers, and any I/O device that can be represented as a file descriptor,
radlib simplifies the implementation of multi-purpose processes, as well
as multi-process applications. In short, radlib is a sincere attempt to
provide real-time OS capability on a non-real-time OS.
Changes: radprocess.[ch] was enhanced to add and remove additional message
queue handlers. Functions were added to flag a message for retention and to
halt the message handler traversal (if the message is to be consumed by a
given handler) which can be called from within a message handler. SHA-1
and SHA-256 secure hashing algorithm utilities were added. These generate
160 bit and 256 bit hashes respectively for memory blocks or for files.
Host endianness is handled properly. CRC16 and CRC32 (CCITT) generation
utilities were added.

[060] - Runabout 5.0
by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
Sat, Oct 22nd 2005 22:11
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: The Runabout is an extension of the Java libraries that adds
two-argument multi-dispatch to Java without changing the language or the
VM. It uses reflection to find visit methods, which are invoked using
dynamically generated and loaded code. The Runabout does not need a
special compiler or changes to Java's syntax. Dispatch with the Runabout
is fairly fast, typically a factor of two to ten times slower than double
dispatch. The Runabout is useful since it can help to make code faster and
more readable. For example, a sequence of instanceof tests is a clear sign
that a Runabout should be used instead.
Changes: This release makes the Runabout code much simpler. The goal was
to make it easier for users to understand code using the Runabout by
avoiding feature-bloat. The major changes are elimination of features.
Specifically, there is no longer support for primitive types or
user-defined dispatching functions. Supporting primitive types would
interact badly with the auto (un)boxing features that are new in Java 5.0.
The implementation was cleaned up to make use of the new features of Java
5.0. As a result, the new version works only with Java 5.0 or higher.

[063] - Sdictionary 1.1.2
by Alexey Semenov (http://freshmeat.net/users/swajj/)
Sat, Oct 22nd 2005 01:30
About: PTkSdict is a dictionary using Sdict dictionary format. Unlike
ptkdic or gtkdic, MySQL isn't needed; you can work with dictionary files
directly. It uses Unicode, meaning that words and articles all are in
UTF-8. There are two index levels, compression, and tools to convert from
text files to .dct and vice versa.
Changes: '--lowercase-alias', '--force-to-lowercase' and
'--disable-duplicates' options were added to the dictionary compiler.
Non-standard indexes are now supported in ptksdict. An online dictionary
compiler was launched. Code cleanups and bugfixes were made.

System
System :: Boot
System :: Installation/Setup
About: slakbootIBS (Slackware Interactive Boot Scripts) is an enhanced set
of replacement boot scripts for the Slackware Linux distribution. It
includes a set of control and dispatch tools for configuring and booting
with colorized interactive scripts. The new boot process allows the
operator to select or skip start-up components in realtime. It facilitates
debugging of startup problems and allows operators to maintain a common
baseline to support several local configurations or multiple servers with
a single set of scripts.
Changes: It is compatible with Slackware 7.0 through 10.2. Many cleanups
and updates were done. Support is provided for ALSA sound, devfs, sysfs,
udev, LVM, 2.4/2.6 kernels, and wireless, cellular, ethernet, and MAC
address spoofing. The utilities were upgraded. The rc.S (filesystem) and
rc.init1 (network) scripts were rewritten. The firewalls were updated, and
the man pages and other documentation were expanded.

[065] - Smart Package Manager 0.40
by badnetmask (http://freshmeat.net/users/badnetmask/)
Sat, Oct 22nd 2005 01:23
System :: Software Distribution Tools
About: Smart is a package manager (like APT or Yum) that works with
several backends including RPM, dpkg, and Slackware packages. It uses an
algorithm that will not only find a solution, if one is available, but
will find the best solution. This is done by quickly weighting every
possible solution with a pluggable policy, which redefines the term "best"
depending on the operation goal (install, remove, upgrade, etc.).
Changes: A channel --remove-all option was added. A bug that made the
rpm-metadata loader ignore explicitly provided files in certain situations
was fixed. A detectsys.py plugin was added, which will automatically detect
and include system channels when they're missing. Double conversion of
paths in LocalMediaHandler is now avoided. German translations were
integrated and the French translations were merged. The deb backend now
uses an underline for the name/version separator. A bug in the protected
read code for old Python versions was fixed along with a locking issue in
the RPM pm.

Sat, Oct 22nd 2005 07:56
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: TCPfork is a userland TCP proxy with advanced load balancing
capabilities. Its core features are the ability to load balance on a
"least connection" basis and the ability to take the machine load into
account ("least load" or "least resource" load balancing). This is
implemented by using the bngagent UDP protocol. It performs "TCP open"
health checks by default and allows the use of external health check
scripts. TCPfork 2.x introduces a highly optimized multithreading
connection scheduler, allowing fast processing of high numbers of
concurrent connections.
Changes: The TCP option TCP_NODELAY is now set by default, which disables
the "Nagle Algorithm". This significantly speeds TCP forwarding of
protocols with small request/response packets (like LDAP).

Sat, Oct 22nd 2005 11:38
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Scientific/Engineering
About: wview is an application that controls a Davis Vantage Pro or
Vantage Pro2 weather station console to retrieve archive records and
current conditions. Archive records may optionally be stored in a
relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL). At a user-defined interval,
wview will use the archive history and current conditions to generate
weather images (buckets and graphs) and Web pages based on configurable
HTML templates. It supports serial and USB data loggers, as well as
connectivity with a terminal server or serial server via TCP sockets.
Changes: The archive record storage was changed so that the bucket type
indicator for 0.01inches is stored in the rain field (0x1000). HTML file
generation was enhanced so it will continue generating files even if a
missing template file is encountered. It will now just log a warning
message. GMT offset configuration of the VP console was added, done each
time the station time is synchronized. The VP console GMT offset is set to
the same value as the wview host system and DST is turned off on the VP
console as the GMT offset already reflects the state of Daylight Savings
Time.
