[001] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 2.7
  by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
  Sun, Oct 23rd 2005 22:24

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.

Changes: This release fixes a number of bugs and problems. Halfling skills
are now displayed properly. A bug with Half-Orc feats was fixed. A number
of bugs specific to Internet Explorer were fixed or addressed in the FAQs.
The appearance of the Equipment Selection page was improved.

[002] - AcpiTool 0.3.0
  by DLeemans (http://freshmeat.net/users/dleemans/)
  Sun, Oct 23rd 2005 17:28

System
System :: Systems Administration

About: AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client. It's a small command line
application, intended to be a replacement for the apm tool. The primary
target audience are laptop users, since these people are most interested
in things like battery status, thermal status and the ability to suspend
(sleep mode). The program simply accesses the /proc/acpi or /sysfs entries
to get/set acpi values. Hence, a computer running a Linux kernel from the
2.4.x or 2.6.x series with ACPI enabled is needed.

Changes: This release adds initial support for the ASUS ACPI driver, and
fixes a bug in the CPU option.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: Arbitrary marker locations and "broken" axes are supported. An
UnFill filltype clips underneath labels and legends. Clipping now works
for labels and all layers. Bugs in precontrol and postcontrol were fixed.
A ticklabel bug and precision errors were fixed. Directories are no longer
stripped from explicit output filenames. The dir argument of picture.fit()
was moved to add/attach. The implicit cast from real to pen was removed. A
path insideness test was added. The interface to plane was improved. The 3D
aspect ratio can be set. A gui() function and MS Windows GUI support were
added.

Multimedia :: Video

About: aviManager helps you manage your (large) movie (DVD, DivX)
collection. It ships with an intelligent voting system for many users, and
attempts to find the best movie to watch. There is also a nice IMdb grabber
for fast movie adding.

Changes: An installer script was added and some minor bugs were fixed.

[005] - av_convert 0.2.1
  by Christian Tusche (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrtu/)
  Sun, Oct 23rd 2005 13:59

Multimedia :: Video
Multimedia :: Video :: Capture
Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: The main part of av_convert is a C++ API for accessing audio/video
files (AVI, Quicktime, YUV4MPEG stream, WAV, etc.). This functionality is
provided by a library and a set of plugin modules for I/O backends and
audio/video codecs. Using this library, "av_convert" can convert between
these file formats and provide basic editing functions, such as cutting
parts of different video sources to one destination. The included program
"av_rec" can record real-time video from a v4l-video-source with A/V sync.

Changes: The major change in this version is the new MPEG encoder plugin,
which uses the mpeg2enc encoder as a backend. Both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2
encoding are possible. Some bugs were fixed in other parts like the
decoding of XVID video, which was broken in the last version, and
timestamp handling in MPEG files.

[006] - Axiomatic Multi-Platform C 1.3.1
  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Sun, Oct 23rd 2005 22:03

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code. It is useful for writing
new applications using existing C skill-sets and porting C programs.

Changes: Bugs related to static structs and the COMPILE utility were
corrected.

  Sun, Oct 23rd 2005 06:57

Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities

About: bbe is a sed-like editor for binary files. Instead of reading input
in lines as sed, bbe reads arbitrary blocks from an input stream and
performs byte-related transformations on found blocks. Blocks can be
defined using start/stop strings, stream offset and block length, or a
combination. Basic editing commands include delete, replace,
search/replace, binary operations (and, or, etc.), append, and bcd/ASCII
conversion. For examining the input stream, it contains some grep-like
features like printing the input file name, stream offset, and block
number of found blocks. Block contents can also be printed in different
formats like hex, octal, ASCII, and binary.

Changes: The %B and %nB format strings were added for the block number in
the filename of the w-command. The documentation was corrected.

About: GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode, and
IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group. It is used to prepare internationalized strings (such
as domain name labels, usernames, and passwords) in order to increase the
likelihood that string input and string comparison work in ways that make
sense for typical users throughout the world. The library contains a
generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC
normalization, mapping and prohibition of characters, and bidirectional
character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL, and
XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA
are supported.

Security

About: GNU SASL is an implementation of the Simple Authentication and
Security Layer framework and a few common SASL mechanisms. SASL is used
by network servers such as IMAP and SMTP to request authentication from
clients, and in clients to authenticate against servers. The library
includes support for the SASL framework (with authentication functions
and application data privacy and integrity functions) and at least
partial support for the CRAM-MD5, EXTERNAL, GSSAPI, ANONYMOUS, PLAIN,
SECURID, DIGEST-MD5, LOGIN, NTLM, and KERBEROS_V5 mechanisms.

Changes: Works around a bug in GnuTLS that made the command line tool exit
after failing to write a zero length message to the peer, which affected
the GSS-API mechanism. This release won't use GnuTLS if
gnutls_certificate_verify_peers2 isn't present. There are improved
configure checks for the presence of libidn, libntlm, libgss, and
libshishi. The gnulib files have been updated, and now include self tests.

About: Paco (pacKAGE oRGANIZER) is a simple, yet powerful tool to aid
package management when installing programs from source code. It uses the
LD_PRELOAD method to track package installations, and provides various
options to keep the installed software organized. It's mainly a command

Changes: There are slight changes in the log format. Users of older
versions should run "paco -au" to update the database. Some bugs in gpaco
have been fixed. A Russian translation was added. The syntax of pacorc is
now more strict. The retrieval of package information at log time has been
enhanced, adding support for builds from outside the package sources
directory and reading config.status and .aspec autopackage files. When

  Sun, Oct 23rd 2005 08:35

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: pam_usb is a PAM module that enables either two-factor or
password-less authentication using an USB storage device (such as an USB
Flash Memory Token) through DSA private/public keys. It can also work with
floppy disks, CD-ROMs, or any kind of mountable device. It includes the
usbhotplug tool, which can be configured to execute a custom program (or
script) whenever an authorized device is plugged in or unplugged. To
improve security, pam_usb supports a serial number access list and private
key encryption. The memory device can still be used to store user data.

Changes: This release adds a verbose mode that prints authentication
status while the debug output is turned off. The code that checks whether
the authentication is requested locally or remotely has been rewritten,
and now works on systems that don't set PAM_TTY properly. There are better
default options: on a common setup, you shouldn't need to set any option as
the default suits most needs.

[058] - Strato Log Download 1.2
  by Henrik Theiling (http://freshmeat.net/users/theiling/)
  Sun, Oct 23rd 2005 14:11

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Archiving
System :: Logging

About: Strato Log Download is a script to download log files from the
German Web space provider Strato, which only provides them via an
interactive Web interface. The server deletes the logs after a while (six
weeks), and humans tend to forget downloading. This script can be used as
a cron job to archive the logs without gaps.

Changes: The download protocol changed (on Sep 29), so the new one had to
be implemented. It's still in the six week range, so if your automated
download failed unnoticed, all log file data is still stored on the
server.

Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony

About: Twinkle is a software phone for voice over IP communications using
the SIP protocol. You can use it for direct IP phone to IP phone
communication, or in a network using a SIP proxy to route your calls. Some
of the features offered are call waiting, call hold, 3-way conference call,
call transfer, and call reject. It supports STUN or a statically configured
public IP address for NAT traversal. When using STUN, it will send
keep-alive packets to keep NAT bindings alive.

Changes: Several build problems with KDE include files and libraries were
fixed. If you already successfully installed release 0.3.1, then there is
no need to upgrade to 0.3.2 as there is no new functionality.
