Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities

About: bbe is a sed-like editor for binary files. Instead of reading input
in lines as sed, bbe reads arbitrary blocks from an input stream and
performs byte-related transformations on found blocks. Blocks can be
defined using start/stop strings, stream offset and block length, or a
combination. Basic editing commands include delete, replace,
search/replace, binary operations (and, or, etc.), append, and bcd/ASCII
conversion. For examining the input stream, it contains some grep-like
features like printing the input file name, stream offset, and block
number of found blocks. Block contents can also be printed in different
formats like hex, octal, ASCII, and binary.

Changes: A bug in the s-command was fixed. This caused an endless loop in
some cases. bbe.html is now installed to /usr/local/share/doc/bbe.

[008] - FlashUnity 0.4

  Fri, Oct 28th 2005 17:36

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment

About: FlashUnity is a channel-based approach to an XML flash
communications server and chat room. By using the concept of channels and
filters, each of which handles a different task, the FlashUnity server
becomes extremely flexible and easy to extend. Also, by using channels it
is possible to run multiple modular functions within the same server.
Filters allow you to prefilter input for all channels or provide other
functionality to all channels. This is a total rewrite of CyberSS, and the
APIs and XML have multiple major changes. There are currently no working
Flash clients.

Changes: The logger filter and chat channel are expanded.

[009] - Flightdeck-UI 0.3.9 (Beta)

  Fri, Oct 28th 2005 11:31

Artistic Software
Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Flightdeck-UI is a project that utilizes the ideas in the design of
aircraft controls and instruments for creating general purpose user
interfaces. The project includes Flightdeck-UI Online (a Web-based
dashboard that works entirely through the browser), the Multi-Variable
Monitor (MVM) application, and a Tkinter widget library. Flightdeck-UI
Online is installed on a Web server. Configuration files are simple Python
scripts; two examples are included with the distribution. The MVM
application provides a graphical editor with theme support for quickly
creating Flightdeck-UI control panels. Several such panels are included as
examples. It is not necessary to write code in order to use MVM. For those
wishing to do so, however, plug-in modules are very easy to develop.
Several such modules are provided in the distribution.

Changes: This version (called Flightdeck-UI Online) works entirely through
a Web browser. It should be installed on a Web server (requires mod_python
and Apache). Flightdeck-UI Online is an advanced beta. Changes (if any)
before the stable release will be very minor. The distribution includes
detailed installation instructions, and two example configuration files
(which are now Python scripts). It has been extensively tested on Linux,
but should run on any Unix-like platform.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type
checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

[023] - lx_lib structural memory library 20051025-1
  by ari (http://freshmeat.net/users/edelkind/)
  Fri, Oct 28th 2005 10:35

Software Development :: Libraries

About: lx_lib is a structural C data library designed for security,
functionality, speed, and convenience (in that order). Memory allocation
is handled using structures and may be performed automatically. This
promotes (among other things) more secure programming practices, obviates
the need to traverse a data buffer to find its length, supersedes the
practice of keeping the current allocated amount in a separate variable
or overallocating, and enables strings to contain binary zeroes. Generic
descriptors allow for better buffering practices, hence potentially faster
 reading and writing operations. They also allow for trivial (and fast)
delimiter separation during reads.

Changes: An lx_map() interface was added for mapping variable-argument
function parameters into a loop over a particular function. Additionally,
and on the same vein, lx_strcat() no longer fails if a buffer was not
previously allocated.

  by Jason Frisvold (http://freshmeat.net/users/XenoPhage/)
  Fri, Oct 28th 2005 17:42

Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Office/Business

About: phpTodo is a Web service designed to help you keep all of your todo
lists in one central place. It includes the ability to view your todo lists
via an RSS feed. These feeds are fully customizable, allowing you to limit
the number of items shown, categories, priorities, and status.

Changes: Only the basic framework exists at this point, and there are a
lot of features still missing. It is stable and useful, though. Future
releases will be backwards compatible, and should contain upgrade scripts
should database structure changes be required.

[029] - poldek 0.20
  by Pawel A. Gajda (http://freshmeat.net/users/mis/)
  Fri, Oct 28th 2005 11:00

System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: The poldek is an RPM package management tool which allows you to
easily perform package verification, installation (including system
installation from scratch), upgrading, and removal. Package dependencies
are automatically handled, so if you try to install a package that needs
others to be installed, it will download all needed packages and install
them. It can be used in batch (like apt-get from Debian's APT) or
interactive mode. The interactive mode puts you into a readline interface
with commandline autocompletion and history, similar to the shell mode of
Perl's CPAN.

Changes: This is the first release after the poldek redesign. New features
and significant changes include a new native package repository index
format, support for Yum and XML Metadata repositories, improved support
for APT-RPM indexes, a more user friendly interactive mode, proper
packages ordering before their uninstallation, a clearer configuration
syntax, a better dependency resolver, and many more.

  by Jörg Schilling (http://freshmeat.net/users/schily/)
  Fri, Oct 28th 2005 05:27

Software Development
System :: Operating System

About: SchilliX is an OpenSolaris-based live CD and distribution that is
intended to help people discover OpenSolaris. When installed on a hard
drive, it also allows developers to develop and compile code in a pure
OpenSolaris environment.

Changes: SchilliX is now based on OpenSolaris Build 25. The CD ISO
assembly kit has been split into the SchilliX base and a separate
OpenSolaris binary tar archive. As the CD ISO assembly kit is now
parameterized, it is easy to create a new version that is based on a
different OpenSolaris build. This allows a new SchilliX release to be
published shortly after a new OpenSolaris build is available from Sun.

[042] - XINS 1.3.0-rc1 (Development)
  by Ernst de Haan (http://freshmeat.net/users/znerd/)
  Fri, Oct 28th 2005 05:30

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: Various minor bugs were fixed. Logging was improved further: some
unused messages were removed, some were added and some were given more
detail. Javadoc documentation was improved, especially on the
ServiceCaller class, regarding load-balancing, time-out and fail-over
configuration and behaviour. The 'xins' shell script was improved slightly
and finally the included xmlenc library was upgraded from 0.49 to 0.51.
This release candidate is considered stable; only changes that are
considered required will be performed before the 1.3.0 final release.
