[001] - 4Suite XML 1.0b2
by Mike Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjbrown/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 23:41
Text Processing :: Markup :: DocBook
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: 4Suite XML is a Python-based toolkit for XML application
development. It features a library of integrated tools for XML processing,
implementing open technologies such as DOM, SAX, XPath, XSLT, XInclude,
XPointer, XLink, XUpdate, RELAX NG, and XML/SGML Catalogs. The RDF and
Repository components of 4Suite are separate packages that must be
installed separately, on top of 4Suite XML.
Changes: 4Suite is now three separate packages: 4Suite XML (XML, XPath,
XSLT, related technologies, and support libraries), 4Suite RDF (RDF
processing libraries and persistence API), and 4Suite Repository (XML and
RDF repository). If you need the RDF or repository features of 4Suite,
stick with 4Suite 1.0b1 for now.

Information Management
Multimedia :: Graphics
Office/Business :: Financial :: Point-Of-Sale
About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128 (A, B, and C), Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2
of 5, and Codabar.
Changes: The auspost encoder was extended to support the customer
information field.

[007] - BlockHosts 1.0.1
by Avinash Chopde (http://freshmeat.net/users/avinash1/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 12:00
System :: Networking
About: BlockHosts is a script to record how many times "sshd" or "proftpd"
is attacked. When a particular IP address exceeds a configured number of
failed login attempts, that IP address is added to /etc/hosts.allow, with
the deny option. A check is also made for stale entries in hosts.allow,
and these will then be deleted.
Changes: This release includes rules to detect invalid logins even when
PasswordAuthentication is set to "no" in sshd_config. With this change,
this version can now handle both "yes" and "no" values for
PasswordAuthentication.

[010] - CaseRePort 0.3
by Andrew Skiba (http://freshmeat.net/users/skibaa/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 05:23
Utilities
About: CaseRePort is a tool to find filename case inconsistencies in the
source tree. It may be useful for porting applications in any programming
language from a case-insensitive (like Windows) to a case-sensitive (like
Linux) run-time environments. It is very fast: searching the Linux kernel
sources takes only 2 minutes.
Changes: Useful command line options were added, including -h for help.
The report was restructured to group filenames that differ only in case,
and it is sorted to make the report predictable for unit tests. The
structures holding the results for the report were restructured into
groups of filenames equal in lowercase.

[011] - CGIProxy 2.1beta9
by James Marshall (http://freshmeat.net/users/jamesmarshall/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 11:58
Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
About: CGIProxy is a Perl CGI script that acts as an Internet proxy.
Through it, you can retrieve resources that may be inaccessible from your
own machine. The user is kept as anonymous as possible from any servers.
HTTP and FTP are supported, and optionally SSL. Common uses include
VPN-like setups, anonymous proxies, personal proxies, and others. Options
include text-only browsing (to save bandwidth), selective cookie and
script removal, simple ad filtering, access restriction by server, encoded
target URLs and cookies, configuration by end user, and much more
(currently about 50 config options). An online demo is available.
Changes: This is primarily a bugfix/workaround release. In short, more
pages behave correctly through CGIProxy. URL handling has been cleaned up
in proxy_encode(), proxy_decode(), and their JS counterparts, and wrapper
functions are now used for them. Some cookie details are now handled as
per browser behavior (though not necessarily as per the spec). Handling of
several JS operators has been reworked.

[012] - Cherokee 0.4.28
by alo (http://freshmeat.net/users/godsmaze/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 11:45
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
System :: Networking
About: Cherokee is a very fast, flexible, and lightweight Web server. It
is implemented entirely in C, and has no dependencies beyond a standard C
library. It is embeddable and extensible with plug-ins. It supports
on-the-fly configuration by reading files or strings, TLS/SSL (via GNUTLS
or OpenSSL), virtual hosts, authentication, cache friendly features, PHP,
custom error management, and much more.
Changes: This release release is much more stable, and all the known
problems have been sorted out. It stores long POST requests in temporal
files rather than keeping them in memory. The TLS port is now
configurable. PHP and CGI header parsing are improved, and a couple of new
variables have been added in order to support software like Wordpress and
Squirrelmail. This version adds new QA tests and fixes a few minor bugs.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
About: Comix is a comic book viewer. It reads zip, rar, tar, tar.gz, and
tar.bz2 archives (often called .cbz, .cbr and .cbt) as well as normal
image files.
Changes: This release adds support for embedded archive comments in the
form of .txt or .nfo files. The convert utility now creates exact copies
of the directory structure in the source archive/directory, including
correct filenames. The zoom in and zoom out commands now zoom 15% relative
to the current size instead of 20% relative to the original size. There are
some minor fixes.

[016] - Data2XML 1.3
by Blackmuzzle (http://freshmeat.net/users/Blackmuzzle/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 06:37
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Data2XML is a quick JAXB-based tool for parsing
simple-to-moderately-complex input data into a flat XML representation. It
is meant to replace simple String.substring() operations and keyword
searches in Java by an easy-to-use XML-configured parser. It is
initialized with an XML configuration file that dictates the parsing
rules, and can then be used to convert an input data stream into XML. It
can search for the occurrence of certain substrings and cut the data into
smaller "Tokens" using various conditions like offset definitions. After a
value is read, it can be validated against a set of OR- and AND-connected
tests that check for the occurrence or non-occurrence of certain strings,
check values, etc.
Changes: Long-overdue regexp valueValidator support was added.

[019] - Decimail 0.5
by Phil Endecott (http://freshmeat.net/users/endecotp/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 17:25
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Database
About: Decimail is a mail server supporting IMAP and SMTP that uses a
PostgreSQL database to store messages. Mailboxes are defined using SQL
queries, allowing complex client-independent automatic message filtering
and categorisation. For example you can partition your messages
chronologically, by correspondent and by mailing list at the same time
with each message appearing in several mailboxes. There is also the
potential for fast keyword searching and to link with address book
applications. Decimail also features anti-spam processing of outgoing
messages.
Changes: Decimail now has a framework for defining and updating mailbox
queries from your email client: arbitrary SQL actions can be attached to
creating, deleting, renaming, and copying messages to mailboxes. An
example of interactively creating per-correspondent mailboxes is included,
and others will follow. Other changes include the adoption of Boost threads
and Subversion.

[020] - DUMA 2.4.26
by Hayati Ayguen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hayguen/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 17:24
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Testing
About: DUMA (Detect Unintended Memory Access) stops your program on the
exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer.
GDB will then display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works
by using the virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of
each buffer: touch that, and your program stops. It can catch formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs. DUMA is a fork of Bruce Perens' Electric
Fence library.
Changes: A major bugfix in the delete macro introduced in 2.4.25. This
release avoids recursion from sem_init() in Linux/Unix where sem_init()
may call malloc(), which again calls semaphore locking. There is a new
project file for Dev-C++ 4.9.9.2 for createconf.

About: GNU/Linux Desktop Testing Project is aimed at producing high
quality test automation framework and cutting-edge tools that can be used
to test GNU/Linux Desktop and improve it. It uses the "Accessibility"
libraries to poke through the application's user interface. The framework
has tools to generate an "AppMap" by reading through the user interface
components of an application. The framework also has tools to record
test-cases based on user-selection on the application. GNU/LDTP core
framework uses "AppMap" and the recorded "test-cases" to test an
application and gives the status of each test-case as output.

Printing
About: Holodeck10 is a Java-based application that runs on Linux. The
purpose of the application is to allow the user to lay out images to be
printed. It supports the basic function that includes orientation
selection (LANDSCAPE or PORTRAIT) and layout (1x1, 1x2, 2x2, 2x3, 4x5, and
6x8). A file chooser is used with a file filter to select image types of
*.jpeg, *.jpg, *.gif, *.xpm, and *.png. The simpledoc interface is used to
prepare the document for printing.
Changes: Support for high image quality was added. A buffering method is
used to reduce the overhead hit during scrollbar movement. However, the
overhead hit cannot be avoided on initial "Drop" and ORIENTATION or LAYOUT
changes without making incorrect assumptions. This feature can be toggled

About: IzPack is a powerful Java installer builder. It is able to create
lightweight and modular installers. You have the choice of the installer
panels you want to use (some can do the same job, so that you can select

that you want to use. IzPack doesn't use any portion of native code, it is
designed to be fully independent from the operating system that runs it.
It is very easy for the end user with a properly installed JVM to use an
installer made with IzPack, since a single "java -jar installer.jar" will
launch it.
Changes: Among the many improvements in this release, you will find new

Thu, Oct 27th 2005 10:19
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: ProGuard is a free Java class file shrinker, optimizer, and
obfuscator. It can detect and remove unused classes, fields, methods, and
attributes. It can then optimize bytecode and remove unused instructions.
Finally, it can rename the remaining classes, fields, and methods using
short meaningless names. The resulting jars are more compact and more
difficult to reverse-engineer. Advantages of ProGuard compared to other
Java shrinkers and obfuscators are compact template-based configuration,
memory efficiency, and speed.
Changes: This release mainly fixes a number of bugs in the optimization
step and some smaller issues with incremental obfuscation and the GUI. The
major new feature is an optimization technique that removes duplicate code
fragments within methods. The optimization step also provides more verbose
information about the optimizations that have been performed. The
documentation and examples have been updated.

system. It was designed to be easy to learn and use, yet remains powerful
enough to allow useful applications to be developed in it.
Changes: This release adds an "import" function to the block subsystem,
allowing a single program to easily load files from the library. It also
adds a floppy driver to the native port.

[059] - rimo 0.2 Alpha
by Charles Y. Choi (http://freshmeat.net/users/kickingvegas/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 05:35
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Telephony
Scientific/Engineering
About: rimo is a tool that runs from cron and executes commands when an
email from a known address is sent to an IMAP4 account. It scans the
IMAP4 account for new rimo email messages and executes the command
specified in them. The scanned email messages have their flags set to
"seen" so that subsequent scans will not re-execute the commands. It is
intended to allow for job dispatch and control via non-traditional
clients such as a cell phone. It does not support direct execution of
commands, so the only commands that can be executed must be defined
beforehand by the user.

[077] - XArchive 0.2.4-2
by yargoflick (http://freshmeat.net/users/ligelowbee/)
Thu, Oct 27th 2005 12:06
System :: Archiving
About: XArchive is a GUI frontend for command-line archiving tools. It
uses external executable wrappers to communicate with the tools. It
consults a wrapper directory at startup to see what types of files it
supports, making adding support for new archive formats a matter of
writing a wrapper for its tool and dropping it in the wrappers directory.
Wrappers are included for TAR, RAR, ZIP, ARJ, 7ZIP, and ACE (extraction
only for ACE).
Changes: This release awkifies the rar-wrap.sh, tar-wrap.sh, and
zip-wrap.sh scripts, making them much easier to read, understand, and
hopefully modify. The tab close button now keeps track of the current
active archive, fixing a minor annoyance when closing a non-active
archive. Finally, the selection of a directory in a rar archive now
correctly selects only that directory's contents.
