[001] - /etc/net Scripts 0.7.15
by Pilot (http://freshmeat.net/users/infrastation/)
Wed, Oct 26th 2005 15:19
System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration
About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides builtin support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable device support, full iproute2 command
set support, interface dependency resolution, and a QoS configuration
framework. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
Ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv6/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
Ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, usbnet, and
PPP. Due to its modular design, support for new interface types can be
added without overall design changes.
Changes: This release features bugfixes (provides default hostname in
/etc/sysconfig/network, defines rmmod path, and network.init bugfixes) and
new options (PPPOE_EXTRA_OPTIONS, PPTP_EXTRA_OPTIONS, and PPPTIMEOUT).

About: Anatomic P2P is an implementation of a protocol designed to
decentralize BitTorrent. It is based on a network of "supertrackers" or
"supernodes" that users query and which route users to the correct
tracker(s). A modified tracker and client are used, and "old" clients can
still use the network. The technology is based on the Gnutella GWebCache
system.
Changes: The other modules of Anatomic P2P have been combined to form this
version. It features major code cleanup and a client with new code to
enable tabbed downloading.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security
About: Antispyd is an HTTP/HTTPS threat filtering proxy server. The main
characteristic of this project is the modularity of his conception. The
program is organized around an HTTP/HTTPS gateway service and a set of
filters that can be enabled or disabled, and are all configurable with a
single configuration file. Current filters are: URL filtering, content
filtering, content-type filtering, cookie removal, pop-up removal, shell
code attack blocking, Web traffic anonymizing, and a signature-based
filtering engine. All filtering is done on the fly, without blocking
downloads in any case. It uses only POSIX primitives and is built with
autotools, and was created with security in mind.
Changes: This release provides a major improvement of the signature based
filtering engine (the BLOCK_SIGN filter) in terms of both performance and
functionality. The signatures are now stored in a 3-Tree to enhance the
matching of each HTTP message. This filtering can be performed on each
HTTP message's content. A signature can use the hexadecimal array of a
byte to specify a field's value.

Office/Business
About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, spot and
calibrated color.
Changes: Text and image extraction was added via the PageExtractor class.
This requires the "Extended Edition plus Viewer" license. Integration with
Apache Lucene was added via the PDFParser.getLuceneDocument() method. XMP
metadata is now parsed and it is kept in sync with the original metadata
(as set by PDF.setInfo). PDF.setInfo() and getInfo() were also updated to
be able to manipulate XMP data as well as the original. "UnscaledPrinting"
was added as an option to PDF.setViewerPreferences(). The viewer can now
display 2, 4, and 16 bit images (16-bit images are downscaled to 8).

these according to non-random clustering of affected individuals, and
judge high-scoring areas as likely candidates for containing disease

by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Wed, Oct 26th 2005 19:33
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: A new last-ditch update mechanism, "conary update-conary", has
been added to make any future protocol conversions easier to manage. The
conary update command has an expanded syntax that is more expressive.
OpenPGP key trust metrics are now implemented so that the client can
choose whether to trust packages based on their signatures. Rollbacks are
now listed newest-first. A generally harmless bug in dependency provision
introduced in 0.70.1 has been fixed.

About: Fortress is a simple script driven framework for performing
security scans. The core of the application is an application which will
execute testing scripts written using the embedded LUA scripting engine.
The scripts may perform almost arbitrary operations, including making HTTP
requests, conducting port scanning, and taking advantage of several other
provided primitives.
Changes: This is the first stable release of the engine. It features the
ability to execute a collection of scripts against a host, or to merely

About: GCViewer is a Swing-based application that visualizes the verbose
garbage collection output generated by the IBM, Sun, and HP Java VMs
(-verbose:gc/-Xloggc:-flags). The data can also be exported as CSV for
forther processing with a spreadsheet application. Visualizing the data
can help when one is tuning the garbage collector, especially the
generation sizes and initial heap size.
Changes: This release focuses mainly on ease of use. A number of little
features have been added which are meant to make your life easier,
including enhanced time and memory formatting, file filters, a popup
dialog for entering the start of log time, a Recent Files menu,
drag-and-drop support, and support for HP-UX Java 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4.0. It
is now possible to open GC logs through URLs. Parse errors are now
reported in an error log window. Zoom scaling has been changed by a factor

About: NeatUpload allows ASP.NET developers to stream uploaded files to

two custom controls. InputFile allows the user to select a file to upload
and ProgressBar displays the upload progress either inline or in a popup.
ProgressBar even allows users without JavaScript to see upload progress.
Changes: This release fixed a bug where using IE to upload a file using a
non-absolute path caused the progress display to start but neither update
nor stop. It also provided a workaround for a bug where
Response.AppendToLog() did nothing when the UploadHttpModule was
installed. Replacing such calls with

About: Plait (pronounced "play") is a new way to find and play music from
the command line. It understands brief, easy to type queries that pick a
single song, mix queries that combine works from multiple artists, and
stream queries that find Shoutcast radio streams. A variety of filters are
available to pick just the music you want. In order to actually play the
music it finds, Plait hands off a play list to one of the supported music
players.
Changes: This release introduces "Plaiter" (pronounced "player"), a
commandline frontend to commandline music players. It complements "plait",
but is also quite useful on its own, especially if you already use mpg123
or similar programs. In addition to the features of mpg123, "Plaiter"
queues tracks, understands commands like play, pause, stop, next, and
prev, and can handle a playlist with more than one type of audio file,
selecting the proper helper application to handle each type of file you
throw at it.

[068] - Rhizome Wiki 0.5.1

Wed, Oct 26th 2005 10:46
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Wiki
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT
About: Rhizome is a Wiki-like content management and delivery system that
exposes the entire site including content, structure, and metadata as
editable RDF. This means that instead of creating a site with URLs that
correspond to a page of HTML, you can create URLs that represent just
about anything. It was designed to enable non-technical users to create
these representations in an easy, ad-hoc manner. For developers, this
allows both content and structure to be easily repurposed and complex Web
applications to be rapidly developed.
Changes: This release adds a new look and feel by including a new, more
usable and polished default theme. The authorization schema has been made
considerably more flexible and expressive, enabling all changes to the RDF
data store to be authorized. In addition, all changes to the data store are
incrementally validated by a Schematron schema using RxPath's new RDF to
Schematron mapping. Raccoon enhancements such as 2-phase commit have been
utilized to make this release more robust.

[069] - rsyslog 1.12.0 (Development)
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Wed, Oct 26th 2005 05:49
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers
support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195, writing to MySQL
databases, fully configurable output formats (including great timestamps),
and the ability to filter on any part of the syslog message. It is designed
as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus able to work with the
same config file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the config file, but in general, this should be fairly easy.
Changes: This release supports experimental multi-threading. The receiver
and the action part were decoupled. Messages can now be buffered before
actions are carried out on them, dramatically improving the performance
during message bursts. It also helps to utilize multicore and
multiprocessor hardware. A number of important fixes were made, especially
for syslog/TCP. As such, all users are advised to upgrade. The experimental
multithreading support can be disabled via simple Makefile settings.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Rx4RDF is a set of technologies designed to make W3C's RDF less
complex and easier to use. It includes RxPath, which enables one to use
familar XML technologies like XPath, XSLT, and XUpdate to query,
transform and update an RDF model, Raccoon, an application server that
uses an RDF model for its data store and RxPath to translate arbitrary
requests to RDF resources, and ZML and RxML, alternative text formats for
XML and RDF that were designed to allow novices to write XML and RDF with
(nearly) the same ease as a Wiki entry.
Changes: This release contains a significantly restructured Raccoon
application server that now supports both XML and RDF data stores, and
adds a two-phase commit transaction coordinator and support for SQL-like
triggers. It can now run multiple applications in the same process, each
owning part of the URL namespace. Other changes include Schematron support
for RxPath and a new user interface for the Rhizome Wiki.

debugging, and encrypted communication, and is up to 20 times faster than
pdb.
Changes: An infinite error loop (EOF) that occured after CTRL-D was
pressed was fixed along with an issue with Windows 98, an exception that
occurred during shutdown when the script source was unavailable, and a bug
with the socket address in use on OS X. The bebuggee now pauses/breaks
before termination. Source retrieval when debugging a Blender script was
optimized.
