Red Hat: Updated wget packages fix a security issue
by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
Section: Security
Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 09:26

GNU Wget is a file retrieval utility that can use either the HTTP or FTP
protocols. A stack based buffer overflow bug was found in the wget
implementation of NTLM authentication. An attacker could execute arbitrary
code on a user's machine if the user can be tricked into connecting to a
malicious web server using NTLM authentication. Fixed packages are
available from updates.redhat.com.

[001] - abcm2ps 4.12.0 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 02:42

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release fixes several layout bugs. The new command %%combinv
and the new decorations +beambr1+ and +beambr2+ were added.

[002] - aiParts 0.8.3
  by Brian Marshall (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmarshal/)
  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 15:41

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence

About: aiParts is a set of C++ classes that implement artificial
intelligence techniques and some tiny sample programs. The classes
implement the pandemonium and emotion AI Patterns, and the High-Hope
technique. A "find the shortest path from A to B" sample program uses
subclasses of the High-Hope classes.

Changes: The parameters for the sample shortest-path program can now be
specified on the commandline, making it easy to experiment with the
program. The logging done by this program (results-only, each-try, or
each-option) has been improved. An aipPandemonium object is now a queue
(rather than a stack). In the aipHighHope code, a bug has been fixed, and
the code has been improved in the solve() function.

  by Stijn van Dongen (http://freshmeat.net/users/micans/)
  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 15:40

System :: Shells

About: Apparix combines the properties of the cdargs utility and the
CDPATH shell mechanism for fast navigation through the file system. It is
especially useful for visiting and documenting both frequently and rarely
used locations. Apparix enables you to attach marks to locations and jump
to those locations by loading the mark. Marking, unmarking and jumping are
simple operations that are performed in the current shell. By setting up
convenient aliases for marking and jumping, the file system can be
navigated in a fast and intuitive manner.

Changes: When the bm alias/function is invoked without arguments, it will
now take the trailing component of the current directory as the bookmark.
A bug in the bash to() function has been fixed, and bash code to add
completions for apparix has been added to the documentation.

other countries. It features a cost calculator, a traffic monitor, an
online timer, and more.

Changes: A new dialog to filter the tariff-list was added. The possibility
to add user-defined tariffs was added. The functionality of the
timer-dialog was improved. Connection starttime after synchronization with
the time-server was corrected. The "replacedefaultroute" option was added
in the settings-dialog. The colors of the GUI were changed. The Java
environment is no longer tested on installation. Some bugfixes were made.

[022] - CTShaper 1.1.1
  by Carlos Rodrigues (http://freshmeat.net/users/CrLf/)
  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 01:28

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Systems Administration

About: If you ever noticed how your SSH/gaming sessions become sluggish
when you start downloading something, or how your downloads slow down when
you start uploading, and your broadband link is managed by a Linux
router/gateway, then you could benefit from using CTShaper. CTShaper
reduces link latency by reducing queueing on your side and on your ISP's
side. Additionally, it sets up four traffic queues with different
priorities and (configurable) flow rates.

Changes: The "iptables-mark.sh" script, which sets up packet marking using
only the "iptables" tool, was added. This is supposed to ease the lives of
those who don't want to learn how to use iptables or those that aren't
using any iptables frontend.

[023] - Daikon 4.1.7
  by Jeff Perkins (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhpnez/)
  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 01:11

Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.

Changes: Enhancements were made to the Kvasir, Mangel/Wurzel, and Chicory
front ends. Kvasir and Mangel/Wurzel both handle arrays of structures and
pointers better than previously. The command line options for Chicory were
standardized. The documentation of each was reorganized and updated. Daikon
has some new and enhanced configuration options.

About: duv visual disk usage draws an interactive visualization of disk
usage, with display area proportional to disk space. The map may be based
on directory hierarchy, uid of owner, file extension (.c, .mp3, etc.), or
number of days since last access or modification. As you move the pointer
across the display, duv annotates the filename and size. As you enter
commands via keyboard or button clicks, duv navigates the hierarchy (real

About: EasyBMP is a cross-platform C++ library for reading and writing
Windows bitmap (BMP) files. Designed for ease of use, it requires no
installation or external libraries, is small in size, well-documented, and
is simple enough for the novice programmer to start in just minutes.

Changes: This release has several major feature enhancements. Endian-safe
read and write support has been added for 16 bpp (bits per pixel) files,
which are commonly encountered in video work. EasyBMP now fully supports
all bit depths: 1, 4, 8, 16, 24, and 32 bpp. The ReadFromFile() function
has improved checks for unsupported files, such as compressed bitmaps and
old OS/2 bmp files. The library has been improved to properly handle files
with meta data between the file information and the pixel data. Lastly,
ReadFromFile() has been improved to properly load files that have
underspecified color tables.

[051] - HTTP client request class 2005.10.31

  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 01:49

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: HTTP client is a PHP class to make HTTP requests. It can submit
requests via a proxy server, establish secure connections (HTTPS) via a
proxy server, PHP with OpenSSL support, or the Curl library with optional
SSL client certificates. It supports HTTP authentication directly or via
proxy using the SASL library, like HTTP Basic, HTTP Digest, and NTLM
(Windows or Samba). It submits POST requests with user-defined form
values, file uploading, or with user-defined request bodies. It retrieves
the HTTP response headers and body data separately. It handles cookies and
automatic redirection handling.

Changes: This release adds support to use the HTTP Digest authentication
SASL mechanism by passing the necessary credentials. It also supports not
encoding authentication responses if the mechanism driver requires that.
This version can handle redirection responses during the authentication
dialog.

About: JGraph Layout Pro is a high performance graph layout library for
JGraph that automatically positions your graph, diagram, or network in a
visually pleasing manner. Layout Pro provides flexibility and a simple
design, enabling you to use circular, tree, force-directed, and
hierarchical layouts with ease. Example uses are organisational charts,
workflow and process diagrams, call charts, network diagrams, UML tools,
and more. It comes with its own documentation and an example applet.

Changes: This release adds a new facade type that does not require a
JGraph instance. This means you do not have to instantiate any Swing
component to use the layout functionality, which is ideal for server-side
graphing. There was a spacing issue with the root node of a SOUTH or EAST
oriented tree layout that has been resolved. The example code has been

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with event
updates using fam), XML (mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb,
LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA generators
include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: Major improvements and bugfixes to XPath 2.0 handling. The
lightweight DOM filesystem wrapper has been extended. The native file://
handler is now more aware of kernel automounting. The ability to export a
Concept Lattice as a conceptual schema has been added. Concept Lattice
layout code has been imported from ego. There are many other updates to

About: The Mknew Project is an investigation of how to build simple Unix
shell scripts to manage common development and administrative tasks. The
emphasis is on using languages and tools that already exist and are in
common use. A related emphasis is on exploring the functional programming
nature of the bash shell. This is accomplished by using the bash function
capability, and using the bash "$(" ")"syntax to delay function execution
in bash scripts. This allows building scripts that have a LISP-like
function syntax that permits shell scripts to be written as a series of
function calls with minimal syntax. The goal is to provide a way to
specify make procedures of heterogeneous components in a bash script.
These can include diverse source code languages, documentation text, test
procedures, and data. In addition to the mknew function library (mklib),
these "make" procedures rely only on capabilities provided by the bash
shell, and common Unix command line utilities.

Database
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Metastorage is a PHP data access object generator compiler tool. It
implements an object persistence API from a description in an XML format
named CPML. The persistent object classes implement object-relational
mappings, so developers do not have to write SQL manually. It features an
object query language for specifying conditions for querying objects,
generation of classes for producing reports, generation of classes to
manage templated Web forms for creating new persistent objects, and
generation of UML class diagrams. It can be run from the command line or
from a Web interface.

Changes: This release adds support for generating functions to manage
transactions. Metastorage now lets the developer integrate handwritten
code customizations in PHP with the code of the classes generated by
Metastorage. The integration is done without losing the customizations
when the classes are regenerated. It is also possible to retrieve object
identifiers of reference variables (one-to-many relationships) of classes
of external components. Several bugs were fixed to handle uncommon
situations.

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It saves many
files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server

[096] - Serving XML 0.3.0
  by Daniel Parker (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielaparker/)
  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 22:02

Database
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Serving XML provides a pipeline language for declaratively
adapting content to XML, transforming it through a chain of XSLT
stylesheets and SAX filters, and producing a stream of output to a local
or remote destination. The accompanying console app supports reading
content as XML files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX events, and writing
it as XML, HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This software is especially
suitable for converting flat files to XML, with its support for variant
record types, multi-valued fields, namespaces, hierarchical grouping of
records, row-by-row validation with XML Schema, and much more. There is
also an API for embedding the software in a Java application.

Changes: The release addressed a number of inconsistencies with regard to
naming and packaging. Two major enhancements were made. Firstly, nested
and repeating groups of record segments are now supported in flat record
definitions. This offers additional support for, among other things,
mapping edi records. Secondly, aggregating content over multiple sources
in record mappings is now supported.

[112] - Tidybot 1.6
  by Leo Breebaart (http://freshmeat.net/users/leobreebaart/)
  Wed, Nov 2nd 2005 00:58

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Tidybot traverses one or more source directories, and runs all HTML
files it finds through the TidyLib checker, collecting all warnings and
errors it encounters and presenting them nicely in an XHTML report. It is
possible to specify files/directories to exclude from the checks,
warnings/errors to suppress in the generated report, and "key:value"
options to pass directly to the underlying TidyLib engine. The generated
report can use a custom CSS stylesheet. Tidybot has both a command-line
interface and a GUI. Tidybot is not an XML/XHTML validator.

Changes: Error handling was improved. The --mailto and --note options were
added for sending out email summaries after a run. (This relies on the
presence of "sendmail" and will work on Unix only). The --include and
--include-from options were added for specifying filenames to include in
the run in addition to the default of all HTML files.
