Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that can help you develop and deploy high-performance
software systems faster and better. ACE is especially useful for systems
that use network and/or inter-process communications and that take
advantage of multithreading. While the ACE source code is free, that's not
the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's wrappers and higher-level
patterns help you develop your software quickly and portably, helping you
to complete your projects on time and within budget.

Changes: A new UTF16 to UCS2 translator. Minor extensions and speedups for
the IIOP, SSLIOP, and the Custom Servant Dispatching Strategy. Unnecessary
dependencies have been removed and TAO has been cleaned up, reducing the
size of the footprint.

  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Fri, Nov 25th 2005 04:02

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code. It is useful for writing
new applications using existing C skill-sets and porting C programs.

Changes: AMPC now uses printf() instead of printf2() to handle DOUBLE type
data. Also, it now assumes all platforms (Linux, Mac, Windows) to use JDK
1.5. Several bugfixes were also done.

[015] - Conary 0.71.2
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Fri, Nov 25th 2005 18:22

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: The update-conary command was renamed to updateconary so that the
easily possible typo "update -conary" would not attempt to remove conary
from the system. Bugs in the "--test" option were fixed for update and
erase. The EtcConfig and Config policies were merged, and all config files
go into ":config" components by default. A Use.xen flag was added. The new
CheckDesktopFiles policy looks for common errors in desktop files. The
Requires policy now interprets synthetic RPATH elements as globs, which
(in particular) makes it easier to package some programs that link with
libperl.so.

  Fri, Nov 25th 2005 09:07

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment

About: FlashUnity is a channel-based approach to an XML flash
communications server and chat room. By using the concept of channels and
filters, each of which handles a different task, the FlashUnity server
becomes extremely flexible and easy to extend. Also, by using channels it
is possible to run multiple modular functions within the same server.
Filters allow you to prefilter input for all channels or provide other
functionality to all channels. This is a total rewrite of CyberSS, and the
APIs and XML have multiple major changes. Each module, filter, and the chat
client are in their own seperate PEAR package.

Changes: This release supports listing rooms, a user list, and default
rooms.

Changes: The main purpose of this release is to correct a problem with
initializing and mounting disks. Status for "disk" and "mount point" was
added. Disk initialization was made more stable. More Samba options were
added. DNS lookup and syslog are known not to work in this version, and
the wrong size disk is displayed for Windows shares. The disk where
FreeNAS is installed cannot be used for sharing data.

About: GXemul is an instruction-level machine emulator. In addition to
simulating CPUs, surrounding hardware components are also simulated, in
some cases well enough to run real (unmodified) operating systems.

Changes: PowerPC emulation is now working well enough to let NetBSD/prep
be installed and run from a hard disk image, a DEC 21143 NIC has been
implemented, and there is now some support for ATAPI CD-ROM emulation.

[026] - Imagero Reader 1.79_96
  by ak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imagero/)
  Fri, Nov 25th 2005 13:53

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Imagero Reader is a Java library for reading image files. Supported
file types include BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG, JNG, MNG, JPEG (including 12-bit
grey), PSD, PBM, PGM, PPM, TGA, EPS, EPSI, and EPSF. The following RAW
file types are also supported, at least partially: MRW, CRW, NEF, DCR, and
DNG. It can read thumbnails, read metadata (IPTC, EXIF, and XMP), edit
metadata, get image width and height, get the number of images contained
in a file, define an area to read, add a ProgressListener, choose an image
channel to read, set a scale factor, set subsampling (JPEG only), and read
an image (or channel) directly into an array.

Changes: Fixes bugs in DHTMarker (corrupt Huffman table after saving) and
in XMPApp1 Marker (forgot to save the namespace string, so the saved
marker was too short). ImageFileDirectory and IFDEntry now implement
TreeNode, so it is easy to visualise TIFF structure.

About: Laughing Man is an application that detects if a Web page has
changed. It uses a Web server's last modified date if available, and
generates a hash number based on the contents of the page.

Changes: This release fixes several bugs, and provides several feature
enhancements, bringing the Factorial branch almost up to par with the
original Laughing Man. Most notably, a nasty Java to Objective-C, Date to
NSDate porting bug in the beta was fixed. The beta was usable, but users
had to wait a little under 3 years for each site refresh. This issue has
been fixed in 0.1, but you must reset your data if you used the beta.

also includes some sample tools to read sectors from discs in CP/M, DOS,
and Acorn formats. There is special-case code for direct access to the
floppy controller under Linux, and to access the floppy driver under
Windows. Java (JNI) bindings are included.

About: Mad Builder PDF Assembler allows you to merge several PDF files
selected by a selection mask. The merging may be ordered. The merging may
take into account only certain enumerated pages of the original files.

Changes: The assembler now tries to detect duplicated fonts during the
assembly process. If the same font is present in two or more original
files, or more than once in one original file, this font will only be
present once in the destination file. A modification of the buffer growth

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: The Google Web driver was fixed to adapt to new HTML ouptut
variations from the search engine.

  by Crimperman (http://freshmeat.net/users/crimperman/)
  Fri, Nov 25th 2005 18:16

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Office/Business

About: Ryan's In/Out Board (formerly known as Whosin) is a simple and
quick Perl-driven Web-based in/out board for use on intranets and
extranets. Users can change their status by clicking their name or calling
the script with a name parameter, allowing for desktop shortcuts which give
single click "check-in/out" links. Custom and/or default comments can be
added to their status. No database system is required, you just need a Web
server and Perl. A script to check all staff out is also provided, which is
handy if called as an overnight cron job. It uses the Date::EzDate Perl
module.

Changes: Additional installation information for Windows. The HTML output
is now much more configurable using CSS. Things such as colours, table
borders, and font size and family can all be set in the config file. HTML
output (if not using your own header file) is fully W3C compliant. You can
set the layout order of the columns (name, mail, date, etc.) in the config

[056] - s11n 1.2.0
  by stephan beal (http://freshmeat.net/users/s11n/)
  Fri, Nov 25th 2005 10:42

About: s11n ("serialization") is a C++ library for easily serializing a
wide variety of objects, including PODs, STL containers, and user-defined
Serializable types. It is completely data-format agnostic and currently
supports 7 data formats, including three XML dialects and one
MySQL-powered back-end. Its author, with atypical hubris, truly believes
s11n to be the most advanced, most flexible, simplest-to-use, and utterly
most powerful serialization framework ever implemented in C++.

Changes: This release is mainly documentation touch-ups and the ringing in
of a new "stable" version. This version ships in two source formats: the
"standard" build tree and a platform-neutral one without build files.

System :: Operating System Kernels

About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal
diagnostics for network and system administrators.

Changes: Updated to Linux 2.6.14. Fixes a fatal bug for some non-ix86
platforms.

  by Ivan Szkiba (http://freshmeat.net/users/szkiba/)
  Fri, Nov 25th 2005 08:07

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: [ini4j] is a simple Java API for handling configuration files in
Windows .ini format. Additionally, the library includes a Java Preferences
API implementation based on the .ini file.

Changes: IniParser is now replaceable at runtime; either the
"org.ini4j.IniParser" system property or the
META-INF/services/org.ini4j.IniParser file can be used to configure this.
This is to conform with the JAR specification's service definition.
org.ini4j.addon.FancyIniParser has been added as an alternate parser with
the following features: An option without the "=" operator means an empty
option. An empty section "names []" means an empty string as the section
name. The first section tag ("[name]") is optional; by default, it is the
same as "[]". Section and/or option names may be converted to lowercase
while parsing.
