[028] - GroundWork Foundation 1.1 Milestone 1
by jm (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnmark/)
Thu, Dec 1st 2005 23:49
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: GroundWork Foundation is a network management data abstraction
layer and development platform written in Java. Currently, it uses data
from Nagios, but feeders can easily be written for other network
management tools. It uses a listener-feeder architecture and exchanges
data in XML. The feeders and the listener can be extended with PHP, Perl,
and Java APIs. Currently, it is built with Sun's JDK 1.4.2, not 1.5. Note
that building requires the proper installation of Apache Maven and Ant.
Changes: This is the first snapshot release of Foundation 1.1 after the
code freeze. Enhancements include integration with more diverse data
sources in addition to Nagios, the ability to add data normalizers
dynamically to the feeder framework, and the ability to enhance the data
store of the admin feeder via XML feeds. A new tutorial was written to
teach how to write a data normalizer and integrate it into Foundation.

Thu, Dec 1st 2005 06:59
Database
Information Management :: Records Management
About: JCards is a free Java application designed to store and manage data
in any format that the user defines. Instead of having multiple
applications/spreadsheets to manage passwords, tasks, shopping lists,
etc., JCards allows the user to define a database that contains the fields
they want. This is accomplished via an easy to use interface that requires
no understanding of SQL or any other database jargon. JCards was initially
developed for the Sharp Zaurus SL-5x00 PDA, but will run on any desktop or
PDA that has a 1.1 or above version of the Java Virtual Machine on it. The
advantage of this is that the user can use the same application on the PDA
and desktop to manage their data.

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the Internet.
Changes: This third maintenance release fixes a number of bugs, including
failure to find the xauth program on Ubuntu 5.10, Error Unknown caused by
NXWin failure at startup, nxssh processes remaining running after the user
quits the GUI, Copy&Paste from Windows to X11 sessions with OpenOffice, and
incorrect handling of the keyboard when the shift key remains pressed.
nxcomp now builds with GCC 4. Compliance with the most recent Linux
distributions was improved. Additional checks are made on the environment
variables to locate NX directories. VNC/RDP password handling was
improved. Patches were imported from OpenSSH 4.0p1. A readme-info file was
added.

About: RLIB is a reporting engine that makes it possible to easily create

ODBC, and programmable pluggable inputs. It is written in C and has PHP
and Python language bindings built in.
Changes: This release adds support for precalculated variable values,
multi-line fields (memo fields), and meta data. Precaculated variable
values give you the variable value as it would normally be at the end of
the report or break footer (if you have reset on breaks). This way, you
can have the totals and subtotals in header sections, or use these values
in expressions on normal detail lines. Multi-Line Fields allow you to have
text span more than one line in a column. An example of this would be
comment fields. MetaData allows you to define data field types coming from
data sources.

the USGS to identify locations.
Changes: With this release, the core functionality is available in a

Database :: Front-Ends
About: SchemaSpy is a Java-based tool that analyzes the metadata of a
schema in a database and generates a visual representation of it in a
browser-displayable format. It lets you click through the hierarchy of
database tables via child and parent table relationships. Browsing through
relationships can occur though HTML links and/or though the graphical
representation of the relationships. It's also designed to help resolve
the obtuse errors that a database sometimes gives related to failures due
to constraints.
Changes: SchemaSpy can now analyze all of the schemas of a database with
one command (-all). This feature should allow a DBA to do a bulk analysis,
documenting every user schema with one command. The layout of the tab area
is now significantly cleaner. The -rankdirbug option was added to deal
with the dot bugs that invariably result from using a non-standard rankdir
in .dot files. Several bugs regarding the new tab structure were resolved.

Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: SDOM is an attempt to provide a complete implementation of the W3C
Document Object Model level 3 API, including event handling, in Scheme, as
an extension of the SXML API. It holds to SXML's conventions regarding the
representation of structured XML as S-lists and conforms to SXML's grammar
such that SDOM documents are also SXML documents and can still be fully
manipulated using the SXML API.
Changes: This release increases the number of tests in the test suite by
an order of magnitude, and also includes improved DOM conformance, several
functions that were previously missing, improvements to performance, and
many bugfixes that greatly improve the usefulness of the package. The
documentation has been expanded to better reflect the contents of the API.

Changes: The tempo dialog box has been revamped and now it preserves more
state when changing the tempo of tracks. A stupid bug that happened for
SQLite users was corrected. A bug when determining the upcoming tracks
number was corrected. The "collection has been fully analyzed" message is
not shown if it's the first time it runs or if there is no collection. A
general master/slave DCOP bridge was implemented for use with FC4's
kdebindings. This bridge is also about 10 times faster than the old
communication system for normal operation.
