[002] - backup 0.1a
by CJ Niemira (http://freshmeat.net/users/cniemira/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 15:04
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Backup adds instant version control to any file on a Unix system.
It is a lightweight interface to the Subversion svn_fs library. It uses
the powerful version control software as a backend to a simple and
minimalistic (though effective) user interface. It is designed for use on
Linux/Unix systems as a method of archiving configuration files that
change semi-frequently, but do not necessarily warrant their own version
control mechanism or repository.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Logging
About: Bandwidth Management Tools is a total bandwidth management solution
for Linux and can be used for firewalling, traffic graphing, and shaping.
It is not based on any currently-available bandwidth management software
and supports packet queues, bursting, complex traffic flow hierarchies,
flow groups, traffic logging, and a simple real-time monitoring front-end.
Changes: Fixes a bug in code that prevented builds with gcc4. Fixes many
gcc4 compiler warnings.

Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion
About: bitterbpp is a GUI interface that uses MPlayer to convert DVDs to
Matroska files. It uses auto-detection and bits/pixel estimates to
generate high quality output, features multiple audio/subtitle track
capabilities (direct copy and/or Vorbis transcoding), and supports
different video codecs.
Changes: bitterbpp-refresh has been separated from bitterbpp. The program
structure has been revised. The documentation has been updated.

[005] - BitTorrent 4.4.0
by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 01:10
Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Software Distribution
About: BitTorrent is a tool for copying files from one machine to another.
FTP punishes sites for being popular. Since all uploading is done from one
place, a popular site needs big iron and big bandwidth. With BitTorrent,
clients automatically mirror files they download, making the publisher's
burden almost nothing.
Changes: All bugfixes and improvements from the Beta branch were
incorporated, including the upgrade to GTK+ 2.6 API functions, massive
code reorganization, internationalization improvements, new icons and
status lights, remembering of window size, and more. A memory leak was
fixed. Hebrew and Icelandic language support was added.

[006] - Blitz JavaSpaces 1.21 (Pure Java Edition)
by Dan Creswell (http://freshmeat.net/users/dancres/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 10:47
Adaptive Technologies
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Blitz is an open source JavaSpaces implementation designed to ease
development and deployment of JavaSpaces technology. It is Jini 2.0
enabled, and uses established VM principles. It also implements smart
indexing, tuneable persistence, and active/passive lease cleanup. It is
designed with experimentation and expansion in mind.
Changes: A file handle leak in the logging subsystem was fixed. A deadlock
caused by interaction between over-running user operations and transaction
resolution under high concurrent load was removed. This release provides a
loopback Jini Transaction Manager, which lives in the same JVM as the
JavaSpaces service, thus providing a significant improvement in
transaction throughput.

[007] - Campsite 2.4.3
by Campware (http://freshmeat.net/users/campware/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 14:34
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Campsite is a multilingual content management system (CMS) for news
Web sites. Campsite's user interface was built with the end user
(journalist, editor, publisher) in mind, and it can be configured to suit
different profiles of end users. Campsite follows the print-newspaper
publishing paradigm, so it structures sites by default as Publications >
Issues > Sections > Articles. Campsite works best for medium-to-large-size
online news publications, but it is capable of handling nimbler sites too.
Changes: This release fixes a critical bug and a couple of minor ones. The
article indexer didn't work (critical), there was an error changing an
Issue's language, and the default country list was updated.

Information Management
Information Management :: Document Repositories
About: CASTORE (CApitalization & STORagE) takes place in a user-centered
design approach to build an open archive platform, planned to create
institutional repositories, managed by librarians in their respective
institutions. With this system, the authors are able to store, convert
(XML), fully index, manage, perpetuate, valorize, and distribute their
digital documents. It uses an assembly of components (Tomcat, OO, JDO,
Saxon, Lucene, etc.) to build middleware applications, relying on XML and
any relational database. The system has been developed with a component
architecture (J2EE) to be able to integrate the platform with any intranet
environment with the minimum cost of development.

About: cdrtools DVD Extensions adds DVD support to cdrtools.
Changes: This patch is for cdrtools 2.01.01a05 and is adjusted to work
with Linux kernel 2.6.12 or higher and can be compiled with GCC 4.0.x. The
rawio patch using libcap was integrated and the scsibug patch is now
redundant as it has been integrated into cdrtools. The RPMs and SRPMs were

[010] - ClusterIt 2.4 (Stable)
by Tim Rightnour (http://freshmeat.net/users/garbled/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 14:34
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration
About: ClusterIt is a suite of software to allow easy maintenance of
large groups of machines. It does not provide a parallel programing
environment, but is meant to be utilized in managing one, or simply to
manage massive server farms. It includes such features as parallel rsh,
parallel copy, parallel virtual xterminals (xterms), and job scheduling
facilities for performing parallel compiling. It also has programs to
allow barrier syncing in shell scripts.
Changes: Fixes jsd to work properly on Linux. Adds a -v option to all
programs to show what version of ClusterIt they are running. Replaces most
instances of sprintf with snprintf. Replaces most instances of malloc with
calloc. Adds RCMD_CMD_ARGS to most of the programs. This makes it easier
to do things like run "ssh -4" as your RCMD_CMD. Fixes a bug where
trailing whitespace on a GROUP or LUMP entry would cause dsh -g to not
match it. Fixes a bug where Linux machines often recieved truncated output
from the child ssh/rsh process. Fixes a bug where all the programs would
mangle argv[0] for ps.

[012] - Conary 0.94
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 14:50
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: Java, Perl, and Python dependencies are now enforced by default.
Querying has been unified and expanded. Conary now displays progress
feedback while applying rollbacks. Redirects no longer point to a specific
trove; they now redirect to a branch. The conary emerge command can now run
on a recipe file as well as building from the repository. The cvc merge
command now properly handles the case where the version number is changed
first on the shadow and then on the parent branch.

[013] - CoverViewer 0.12-rc2 (Prerelease)
by caligari77 (http://freshmeat.net/users/Caligari77/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 06:15
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
About: CoverViewer is an XMMS plugin that displays images related to the
files being played. The displayed image can be a copy of the cover of the
album you are playing or anything else you want. It creates a personalised
skin for itself using the current XMMS skin, and you can control song
playing from its interface. It includes a function that can automatically
retrieve covers you don't have from the Internet, using file tag
information to get the artist and album name.
Changes: Lyrics retrieval functions have been fixed and improved. KDE
folder icons can be created by pressing "i" on the desired cover. For now,
this function needs ImageMagick's "convert".

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: php4dbi is a database abstraction layer for PHP. It is simple to
use (a single file with a simple API) and lean enough to not bloat your
PHP application. It provides a common API for accessing a variety of
database systems. This allows you to develop your application without
limiting it to working on just a single database. Supported databases
include MySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, ODBC, Interbase, SQLite,
and IBM DB2. Support for BLOBs is also included.
Changes: This is the initial public release. Previously, this tool was
bundled with the WebCalendar application (since 2000).

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for rapidly developing search
engines on any relational database. It's scalable, fast to develop, and
fast to search. It runs on any JDBC-supported relational database. It can
work on any new systems or old legacy systems that need full-text search,
without changing existing systems. It's based on the high-performance
Lucene API. It has a Web UI for configuring data retrieval, content
indexing, and displaying templates. It can also serve as a Lucene learning
tool or RAD tool.
Changes: This version can trigger indexing, re-indexing, or full-indexing
from localhost by localhost. A search of multiple indexes displays only
the selected indexes in global navigation. A search of a single index can
be configured to display all available indexes in global navigation. As an
experimental feature, different fields can have different analyzers.

Text Processing
About: gcin (Gtk Chinese INput application in X) is a Chinese input method
server for Big5 Traditional Chinese character sets. It features a GTK user
interface. It is a very popular Chinese input method (IM) server in
Taiwan, which focuses mainly on Traditional Chinese. Its IM table format
is almost the same as xcin, and comes with a conversion program to help
xcin users transfer their settings. A GUI interface is used for gcin
settings such as your favorite Chinese input table and keyboard layout. It
is often straightforward for users to append other input tables not
originally included in the release package, or tables used by other IMs
such as scim.
Changes: en_US.UTF-8 is supported as an XIM. A bug with gdmxnest was
fixed. When compiling gcin with "disable XIM", "gcin -v " will not show
version info。. The font size is limited to 32 in the gcin-setup
window. The fuzzy query window can also set the font size. The pop-up
window now works with the mouse in the lower-right corner of the status
bar. The left button activates the symbols-window; the middle button
switches the input module; the right button runs gcin-setup.

[025] - getmail 4.5.0 (Stable)
by Charles Cazabon (http://freshmeat.net/users/twoflower/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 18:35
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.
Changes: The delete_dup_msgids option has been added to non-multidrop POP3
retrievers. A stack trace in the getmail_fetch error message when a
configuration error is detected is suppressed. There are documentation
updates and build and development environment changes. The reason for not
retrieving a message (seen or oversized) is explicitly logged.

About: gimmage is an image viewer that is perfect for command line usage
as it accepts directories and image filenames as arguments. It has an
in-application file browser that allows users to select and drag images
and directories into the image viewing area in order to have them
displayed.
Changes: When the user opens one image, the directory of that image is
scanned for others. The file browser now opens the directory of the
current image, unless the file given was specified using a relative path.
The current file is selected in the file browser, unless the file was

[027] - Gizmo Daemon 2.0
by fLithm (http://freshmeat.net/users/fLithm/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 14:49
System :: Hardware
About: Gizmo Daemon is a program for controlling your computer based on
events from input devices. It has built-in support for all Linux input
devices, including keyboards with special keys, joysticks, remotes, dials,
and more. It lets you control applications, launch programs, change the
system volume, switch desktops, and directly control XMMS/BMP. It has
special support for the Griffin PowerMate USB Dial, allowing certain
events to be visualized on the PowerMate's LED (such as XMMS/BMP sound
output, CPU usage, etc.). It features support for IR LIRC based Remotes as
well as RF Remotes (such as the ATI X10 Remote), allowing it to have
per-application key mappings and configurable sensitivity settings (handy
for MythTV users). It also has XOSD support for (TV-friendly) on-screen
displays.
Changes: The scripting language has changed from Lua to Python, which
brings added stability, and a significantly more powerful scripting API.
Plugins can now be implemented directly from Python using the scripting
API if desired. All of the old device plugins are still there: PowerMate,
Generic (keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc), and ATI X10 RF Remote, but there
is now out of the box support for LIRC based IR remotes, and a keymap
specifically designed for Happauge remotes.

About: OST-Box (Open Set-Top Box) is (yet another) set-top box program.
Its goal is to provide easy access to all kinds of media and to be easy to
extend. Its interface is written in XML and JavaScript (using Mozilla
Spidermonkey). The current features include browsing and editing of photo
collections, playing of video clips, and control from lirc.
Changes: Various improvements were made. The UI now gives an animated
visual feedback when an action is selected. Thumbnail generation has been
improved by applying a filter on images before resizing. OST-Box now
updates only the parts of the screen which have been modified. This saves
lot of CPU and makes the UI more responsive. Some important bugs have been
fixed in the player.

[060] - otl 0.40
by david a thompson (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomp/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 14:36
Text Processing :: General
About: otl is intended to convert a text file to a HTML or XHTML file. It
is different than many other text-to-HTML programs in that the input
format (by default a simple highly readable plain text format) can be
customized by the user, and the output format (by default XHTML) can be
user-defined. It can process complex structures such as ordered and
unordered lists (nested or not), and add custom "headers" and "footers" to
documents. The conversion utilizes Perl regex, adding quite a bit of
flexibility and power to the conversion process. Since both the syntax of
the source file and of the output can be readily customized, otl in theory
can be used for many types of conversions. The package also includes
tag-remove, a script for stripping HTML/XHTML-ish tags from documents.
Changes: This release contains many significant bugfixes, along with a
general cleanup of the code (many inconsequential bugs that caused Perl to
complain have been fixed). It also includes major bugfixes for tag-remove.
A simple script, chempretty, was added to the package. Chempretty scans a
plain text file, looks for common plain text chemistry items (example:
H2O) and converts them to "prettified" HTML (example: H2O).

Software Development :: Code Generators
About: PHP Object Generator (POG) is a PHP code generator which generates
clean and tested object oriented code for your PHP4/PHP5 application. It
is meant to eliminate the time a PHP programmer often wastes on repetitive
coding of the database access layer of an application simply because
different applications require different objects. By generating PHP
objects with integrated CRUD methods, POG saves you from writing and
testing SQL queries.
Changes: The generated code package now contains a setup file. A Web
interface was added. Compatibility with Opera was improved. The usability
of the Add Attribute feature was improved. The @link bug which occurred
with certain attributes of types was fixed. The generated code package
doesn't contain a README file anymore. The contents of README have been
merged into the setup file. CRUD methods are now identical across objects.
In particular, GetList has been renamed to GetList for all generated
objects. Code cleanliness was improved and spacing is more consistent in
the generated code.

About: Redet is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions
using any of more than 40 search programs, editors, and programming
languages, intended both for developing regular expressions for use
elsewhere and as a search tool in its own right. For each program in each
locale, a palette showing the available constructs is provided. The
properties of each program are determined by runtime tests, which
guarantees that they will be correct for the program version and locale.
Additional features include persistent history, extensive help, a variety
of character entry tools, and the ability to change locale while running.
Redet is highly configurable and fully supports Unicode.
Changes: Support for patmatch, a pattern matcher for nucleotide and
protein sequences was added. Keyboard shortcuts may now be defined in the
user's initialization file. A test and palette entry were added for the
Tcl-style case sensitive flag. The Help menu was reorganized and all of
the popup entries were made into toggles. The delimiters for character
class intersection may now be redefined from the initialization file,
allowing this facility to be used with regular expression engines that use
angle-brackets as metacharacters or where it is necessary to match
angle-brackets.

[076] - rsyslog 1.0.4 (Stable)
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 05:50
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), and the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message. It is designed as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and
thus able to work with the same config file syntax. Of course, some
enhanced features require changing the config file, but in general, this
should be fairly easy.
Changes: Just a single fix was made. There were some printfs from the
debugging aid left over, and they would appear each time a message is
received via TCP. Obviously, this may cause performance problems on busy
systems. Please note that it affects the TCP receiver only, so if only
local sockets or UDP are being used, this bug is irrelevant. The issue can
also be fixed by deleting 2 lines of code as described on the project's Web
site.

[089] - Usermin 1.190
by Jamie Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcameron/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 06:49
System :: Systems Administration
About: Usermin is a Web interface that can be used by any user on a UNIX
system to easily perform tasks like reading mail, setting up SSH, or
configuring mail forwarding. It can be thought of as a simplified version
of Webmin designed for use by normal users rather than system
administrators.
Changes: Support for DAV clients was added, using the /dav URL path. The
SSH module supports version 2 private and public keys, and allows version
2 authorized keys to be edited. The File Manager module can show small
previews of GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PDF, and Postscript images, scaled down
on the server side. The Scheduled Emails module now allows additional
files to be attached to the sent email.

Internet
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Security
About: VisualRoute combines the tools traceroute, ping, reverse DNS, and
whois into a single graphical interface that analyzes Internet
connections, reporting quick and essential data points for finding
connectivity problems. An IP location database identifies the geographical
location of IP addresses and Web servers, showing the path of an Internet
connection on a global map. The domain registration and network provider
contact information are reported for each hop of a network route for quick
problem reporting. Several new advanced edition options include reverse
tracing to initiate a connection test from a remote desktop or data
center, port testing, Internet application testing, and TCP traceroutes.
Changes: IP location database update.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: WASP (Web Application Structure for PHP5) is a multi-tier web
application framework built on object oriented PHP5. The framework is a
simplified Model-View-Controller architecture. The controller is built by
adding content "Chunks" to "UIModules". The model portion of the framework
wraps PEAR DB_DataObjects in a business object layer. The view portion
currently makes use of PEAR Html_Template_Flexy, but can be easily
reimplemented using different template managers (or none at all).
Changes: This release included functions to make form validation automatic
and easy to do. It also included a library of validation functions that you
can use to validate common things like phone numbers, zip codes, and dates.
These functions will conveniently output standard error messages that you
can easily override or customize.

[092] - Webmin 1.260
by Jamie Cameron (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcameron/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 06:47
System :: Systems Administration
About: Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix.
Using any browser that supports tables and forms, you can setup user
accounts, internet services, DNS, file sharing and so on.
Changes: Multiple Webmin users and groups, Perl modules, and cron jobs can
be deleted at once. The Apache module supports Debian's
/etc/apache/sites-enabled directory. Manual config file editing was added
to the BIND, Dovecot, Postfix, Samba, and SSH Server modules. The File
Manager module can show small previews of image files, scaled down on the
server side. The Bootup and Shutdown module uses the chkconfig command to
enabled and disable actions. The MySQL module can edit server settings in
the my.cnf module.

About: Wikepage is a 25kb small wiki/personal site builder. It has i18n
support, multi-language site support, password protected pages, table
support, CSS styling, file upload, and a lot of other features.
Changes: An unnecessary edit confirmation box was removed while retaining
safety. File upload support was adjusted to upload a maximum of 1Mb of
file data instead of only 122Kb (1Mbit). This restriction can be adjusted
from index.php. An important URL filtering bug which affected versions
since 2006.1 was solved.

[094] - WordPress 2.0.1
by Dougal Campbell (http://freshmeat.net/users/emc3/)
Wed, Feb 1st 2006 10:34
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: WordPress is a state-of-the-art, semantic, personal publishing
platform with a focus on aesthetics, Web standards, and usability. It was
born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architectured personal
publishing system, and is the official successor to b2/cafelog. While
primarily geared towards functioning as a Weblog, it is also a flexible
CMS capable of managing many types of Web sites. In addition to the basic
Weblog functions, it also has an integrated link manager (e.g. for
blogrolls), XFN support, support for "static" pages, Atom and RSS feeds
for both content and comments, XML-RPC blogging API support (Blogger,
MetaWeblog, and Movable Type APIs), spam blocking features, advanced
cruft-free URL generation, a flexible theme system, and an advanced plugin
API.
Changes: This update contains over 100 minor bugfixes and enhancements.
You can now specify an upload directory, and whether to use date-based
storage or not. Caching has been fixed under certain PHP environments.
Permalinks have been fixed for weird environments. XML-RPC uploading
works. Compatibility with older versions of PHP. Several WYSIWYG fixes and
cleanups. Imports now use much less memory. Now works with MySQL 5.0 in
strict mode.

[095] - x10 0.3.1
by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development
Software Development :: Compilers
About: X10 is a type-safe, modern, parallel, distributed object-oriented
language intended to be very easily accessible to Java programmers. It is
targeted to future low-end and high-end systems with nodes that are built
out of multi-core SMP chips with non-uniform memory hierarchies, and
interconnected in scalable cluster configurations. X10 highlights the
explicit reification of locality in the form of places; lightweight
activities embodied in async, future, foreach, and ateach constructs;
constructs for termination detection and phased computation; the use of
lock-free synchronization; and the manipulation of global arrays and data
structures.
Changes: This release fixes many small bugs in the code generator and adds
improved support for various X10 constructs. Specifically, integers can now
be specified in hex or octal, exploded syntax can be used with functions,
and normal method arguments and assertion failures are now reported with
line number information. The system can now interpret standard benchmarks
such as linpack. Memory requirements were reduced; in particular some huge
leaks in the test suite were fixed.
