[003] - argtable 2.6
by Stewart Heitmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/sheitman/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 01:01
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Argtable is an ANSI C library for parsing GNU style command line
arguments, as in "foo -abc -o myfile --help --count=7". It enables a
program's command line syntax to be defined in the source code as an array
of argtable structs. The command line is then parsed according to that
specification, and the resulting values are returned in those same structs
where they are accessible to the main program. The default parsing,
validation, and error reporting routines may be replaced by user-defined
callbacks if desired, and new argtable data types may be created to parse
user-defined argument types. The parsing itself is done using GNU getopt
and so is 100% GNU compatible.
Changes: This release reinstates the Windows makefiles that were
accidentally omitted from the previous release. There are no changes to
the code base.

[004] - Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script 1.8.5-RC6
by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 06:57
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script is a secure stateful firewall for
both single and multi-homed machines. It supports NAT and SNAT, port
forwarding, ADSL ethernet modems with both static and dynamically assigned
IPs, MAC address filtering, stealth port scan detection, DMZ and DMZ-2-LAN
forwarding, protection against SYN/ICMP flooding, and extensive user
definable logging with rate limiting to prevent log flooding. It features
support for all IP protocols and VPNs such as IPSec. and is easy to
configure and highly customizable. A filter script that makes your
firewall log more readable is also included.
Changes: Miscellaneous changes, tweaks, and improvements were made for
DMZ/LAN rules. INET->DMZ rule support was added. Range support was added
for the blocked hosts file.

[005] - Automated Argument Helper 1.1.3
by Scott McKellar (http://freshmeat.net/users/mck9/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 19:20
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Aargh is a code generator written in C++. Based on specifications
defined in an XML file, it generates C or C++ code to parse a command
line, using the getopt() facility available in Unix, Linux, and similar
environments. It supports command line options with integer arguments,
string arguments, and no arguments. It optionally applies range tests to
validate the option arguments, or calls a user-defined validation
function. The generated code is commented and carefully indented for
readability.
Changes: This release enables the user to specify a default value for the
argument of a string option. It also fixes a bug that sometimes caused an
#include directive to be written incorrectly.

[030] - GeneRecon 1.0.0
by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 06:38
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: GeneRecon is a software package for linkage disequilibrium mapping
using coalescent theory. It is based on a Bayesian Markov-chain Monte
Carlo (MCMC) method for fine-scale linkage-disequilibrium gene mapping
using high-density marker maps. GeneRecon explicitly models the genealogy
of a sample of the case chromosomes in the vicinity of a disease locus.
Given case and control data in the form of genotype or haplotype
information, it estimates a number of parameters, most importantly, the
disease position.
Changes: The beta testing phase is over, and this release fixes the few
bugs that were found.

System :: Installation/Setup
About: mkCDrec (Make CD-ROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito)
disaster recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or
more CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored
on another disk, NFS/CIFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or
system intrusion, the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can
restore the complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning,
which allows one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk
does not have to be of the same size, as it calculates the partition
layout itself). Currently, ext2, ext3, minix, MS-DOS, FAT, VFAT, Reiserfs,
XFS, and JFS filesystems are supported. It can restore disks in Software
RAID and LVM mode. It supports the One Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR)
mode, which simulates a bootable CD-ROM on tape.

by core_dump (http://freshmeat.net/users/core_dump_0/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 01:39
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: Shipwreck is a game in which you and the computer both have 5 ships
which must collect treasure without crashing into ships, islands, or going
off of the screen. The wind may blow you off course, and some ships are
more resistant to wind than others. The game ends when either all ships of
one team are gone or all treasure is collected, after which the amount of
treasure both teams have is counted and the player with the most treasure
wins. Shipwreck is a Web-based Java applet, so it is available for play
online as well as for download.

About: SWIG is a software development tool that connects programs written
in C and C++ with a variety of high-level programming languages. SWIG is
primarily used with common scripting languages such as Perl, PHP, Python,
Tcl/Tk, and Ruby, however the list of supported languages also includes
non-scripting languages such as C#, Common Lisp (CLISP, Allegro CL, UFFI),
Java, Modula-3, and OCAML. Also several interpreted and compiled Scheme
implementations (Guile, MzScheme, Chicken) are supported. SWIG is most
commonly used to create high-level interpreted or compiled programming
environments, user interfaces, and as a tool for testing and prototyping
C/C++ software. SWIG can also export its parse tree in the form of XML and
Lisp s-expressions.

Information Management :: Document Repositories
About: SiSU (Structured information, Serialized Units) is a document
creation and management framework. It manages electronic texts and
document collections with minimal markup requirements, and provides an
"atomic search" and text positioning system. It can produce output as
plain-text, HTML, XHTML, XML, ODF (OpenDocument), LaTeX, PDF, or SQL (for
PostgreSQL or SQLite). SiSU is a command line tool/batch processor and a
markup syntax. Documents are prepared by marking them up for SiSU with
your favorite text editor and then generated in the desired output
formats. A vim syntax highlighting file for SiSU syntax is provided.

Sun, Feb 12th 2006 06:53
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Widget Sets
About: Todays applications tend to be skinnable: cdplayers, email
notifiers, even operating systems. SkinLF provides a skin system for Java
programs.
Changes: This release fixes an issue with the editable JComboBox when
running JDK 1.4 or 1.5, and provides a better JFileChooser implementation.
A German resource file was added. NativeSkin support for JDK1.3 was
dropped. This release also fixes a minor bug in NativeSkin where a window
was 1 pixel wider than it should have been. The version number scheme has
been changed to YEAR.MONTH. With the old version number scheme, this
version would have been named 1.2.13.

[068] - SmallSQL 0.11
by SmallSQL (http://freshmeat.net/users/smallsql/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 19:35
Database :: Database Engines/Servers
About: SmallSQL is a pure Java DBMS, a relational database for Java
desktop applications. It has a JDBC 3.0 interface and offers many ANSI SQL
92 and ANSI SQL 99 features. It is very small and fast because it does not
have a network interface.
Changes: An NPE was fixed in the method DatabaseMetaData.getTables(). The
NPE occurred in unconnected mode with the tool JDBC Navigator. This
release will free the cached resources of a database if all connections to
this database are closed. There is a more helpful exception if a connection
is closed instead of a NPE. There is a fix for the error "Invalide column
size:-1" for the data types LONGVARCHAR, LONGVARBINARY, VARCHAR larger 127
characters, and VARBINARY larger 127 bytes.

[070] - sshdfilter 1.4.3
by Greg (http://freshmeat.net/users/grg/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 00:45
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: sshdfilter automatically blocks ssh brute force attacks by reading
sshd log output in real time and adding iptables rules based on
authentication failures. Block rules are created by logging on with an
invalid user name, or wrongly guessing the password for an existing
account. Block rules are removed after a week to maintain a small list of
blocks. It also comes with a LogWatch filter.
Changes: Custom ports and options such as -j REJECT are a configuration
option. A hanging email command no longer delays sshdfilter. The result
code from system() calls is checked when adding block rules. The SSHD
chain name is now a config option, so multiple instances of sshdfilter can
have their own chains. Support for multiple configuration files was added.
Support for Gentoo and Debian sid was added. The LogWatch installer for
Fedora Core 4 was improved. The LogWatch script's compatibility with other
versions of LogWatch was improved. Man pages were added for sshdfilter and
sshdfilterrc.

by Dumbkiwi (http://freshmeat.net/users/dmbkiwi/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 00:52
About: Su-per-Doku is a sudoku puzzle game for superkaramba. It generates
its own 9x3x3 puzzles, and has four levels of difficulty. Hints can be
toggled on or off. Possible candidates for cells can be entered and
displayed. Status messages to let the user know what's going on. An
auto-solver is included. This is a simple but robust implementation of
this very popular puzzle.
Changes: Games are now automatically saved as you go, so they are restored
when you restart. Cells are now green until the ENTER button is pressed.
This gives a better clue about unentered cells. Deleted cells are now
handled correctly.

by jimmy Zhang (http://freshmeat.net/users/jzhang2005/)
Sun, Feb 12th 2006 00:33
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: VTD-XML is an XML parser that goes beyond DOM and SAX in terms of
performance, memory, and ease of use. Currently, it only supports built-in
entity references (" &s; ' > <). Its innovative features include
XML indexing (due to inherent persistence of VTD) and incremental
updating. Its memory usage is typically between 1.3 to 1.5 times the size
of the XML document.
Changes: The core parsing routine was rewritten for modularity and
improved performance. XPath Evaluation performance was significantly
improved. The maximum UTF-8 document size was increased to 2GB (without a
namespace). A Buffer reuse option was added to further improve core XML
parsing performance. Various bugfixes and code quality enhancements were
