System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: Argo is a monitoring system for the Xen hyperviser, comprised of a
network server which runs upon your Xen host and any number of clients
which connect to that server over a socket. Supplied with the server are
two clients: a simple Web-based client and a graphical desktop client. The
clients allow you to start, stop, pause, or query available Xen virtual
instances.

Changes: This is the first release which easily generates Debian packages
and installs the server cleanly. The Perl client works correctly when
connecting to the server and allows all the basic operations to be carried
out.

  by Thomas Obermair (http://freshmeat.net/users/thomasobermair/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 00:01

Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge". It supports "all service load
balancing" based on client IP address which allows almost any protocol to
be supported. It supports single legged operations, either on IP-Level or
as DSR (Direct Server Return / "nPath") configuration.

Changes: The syntax of the "gateway" command was extended to a block to
prepare for upcoming extensions. The old syntax is automatically
converted, maintaining backward compatibility. A bngagent implementation
for Windows has been added to the "contrib" directory of the distribution,
being a customer contribution without any warranty or support. It's called
"BngAgentService" and implements a Windows Service. The manual has been
updated to release 1.450.0.

  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 15:38

Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat

About: bbs100 is a BBS in the style of DOC and/or YAWC. DOC is a style
that remotely resembles Citadel. What's special about bbs100, is that it's
a single process daemon that handles all connections at once, while
consuming very low cpu resources ( < 1%). It can handle over a thousand
simultaneous users. It is highly customizable, is easy to setup, and has
many configurable features. bbs100 is almost a must-have for people that
want to run a DOC-style BBS.

Changes: IPv6 support has been added. There are many new options for
users: improved color editing; uploading and downloading of profile and
room info; automatic coloring of messages; and users may choose a Modern
or Classic color scheme. Admins can now change many things from within the
BBS without the need for external shell access. Numerous bugs have been
fixed, and code has been rewritten for both cleanliness and efficiency
reasons.

[009] - C++ Regex Engine 1.04
  by unr_stuart (http://freshmeat.net/users/unr_stuart/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 11:28

Text Processing

About: C++ Regex Engine provides a robust regular expression library for
use in C++. The syntax of the regular expression language is very close to
the Perl 5 standard. The classes given somewhat mirror those found in
Java's regular expression library, but have several improvements. The
intended audience of this package is anyone who does a lot of data parsing
(e.g. sysadmins), people tired of trying to decipher Perl scripts, and
regular expression beginners who know C++. Some knowledge of the STL's
vector and string will come in handy, but isn't necessary.

Changes: Functionality in UnicodePattern and UnicodeMatcher regarding
character classes and non-capturing groups has been fixed. A runtime error
occurring when getGroup(int) is called (both in Matcher and UnicodeMatcher)
with an empty group has been identified and fixed.

  by constans (http://freshmeat.net/users/constans/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 23:45

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.

Changes: Preparser functionality through external, user-defined scripts
was included. This makes it possible to use the many available conversion
tools to ease reference extraction from within a cb2Bib session. Two
sample scripts based on the BibUtils Package, isi2bib and ris2bib, were
added. The copy/rename functionality now acknowledges the original file
extension, the embedded editor has had a few minor improvements, and a
contributed regexp was included.

[012] - Citadel 6.72
  by Art Cancro (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajc/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 07:30

Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email

About: Citadel is an advanced messaging and collaboration system for
groupware and BBS applications. Users can connect to Citadel using any
telnet, WWW, or client software. Among the features supported are public
and private message bases (rooms), electronic mail, real-time chat,
paging, shared calendaring, address books, mailing lists, and more. Unlike
other collaboration servers, Citadel provides its own data stores and is
therefore extremely easy to install; you don't have to "bring your own"
email and database because they're built in. The server is multithreaded
and scalable. In addition, SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 servers are built-in for
easy connection to Internet mail. Citadel is both robust and mature; it
has been in production since 1987.

Changes: Significant improvements were made to the handling of messages in
foreign character sets. Support for upstream smart-hosts that require
smtp-auth was added.

[013] - CoaSim 0.4 (Python)
  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 06:59

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: CoaSim is a tool for simulating the coalescent process with
recombination and gene conversion under the assumption of exponential
population growth. It efficiently constructs the ancestral recombination
graph for a given number of individuals and uses this to simulate samples
of SNP and micro satellite haplotypes/genotypes. The generated sample can
afterwards be separated in cases and controls, depending on the states of
selected individual markers. The tool can accordingly also be used to
construct cases and control data sets for association studies.

Changes: This version adds simulation callbacks to the Python interface.
Callbacks are provided through class methods of an object passed to the
simulate function as an optional argument.

[014] - compFUSEd 200605021
  by 1bitmemory (http://freshmeat.net/users/1bitmemory/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 00:07

System :: Filesystems

About: compFUSEd is a simple FUSE based compressed overlay filesystem that
provides both read and write operations. Files are compressed and
decompressed on-the-fly, but the actual storage is done in the directory
of an underlying filesystem. This underlying filesystem takes care of
space allocation, fragmention, and other operations not related to
compression. It features a configuration file, the ability to use multiple
compression formats, a blacklist of extensions that should not be
compressed, and more.

Changes: This release was updated to comply with the new FUSE 2.5.x API,
so FUSE 2.5.x is required. A bug was fixed in cf_getattr() for files which
were not compressed by compFUSEd. Numerous fixes were made to the statfs
related code. The code for path names was protected. A small strcmp hack
was made for lookups. The Makefile was restructured to build a cf library
(libcf.a), to compile compFUSEd with fewer compression libraries, and to
add more variables to specify the include path and library path.

About: cPige is a backup tool designed for Web radio. Its main goal is
backing up one day of streaming on an icecast / shoutcast MP3 stream. It
can also be used as a standard stream ripper (artist - title.mp3).

Changes: This release adds a config file parser to avoid long command
lines. It adds the ability to back up a complete week of streams in pige
mode. It adds the ability to skip the first "n" songs of the stream. There
are minor bugfixes.

About: DBBrowser is a program that can be used to run queries and view
the structure of databases. It was designed to work with as many RDBMS
systems as possible using JDBC. It uses a plugin API and can connect to
any system for which a JDBC driver exists.

Changes: This release adds support for scripting using BeanShell. Scripts
can be created that have full access to the database connection. There are

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Documentation
Information Management

About: Emdros is a text database engine for annotated or analyzed text. It
is applicable in linguistics, publishing, text processing, and other fields
dealing with annotated text. Emdros has a powerful query language for
asking relevant questions of the data. It is middleware, acting as a layer
between a client (written by the user), and an underlying database.
PostgreSQL and MySQL are supported.

Changes: Mac OS X support was added. An importer for Penn Treebank Format
was added and export to Annotation Graph format was implemented. The
Emdros Query Tool was given a facelift. A new Chunking Tool was example.
Various bugfixes were made. Various statements received a speed increase.
NOTEXIST is now possible again even if it is not the only block in its
context. An importer was added for the Unbound Bible format.

[023] - Excelsior JET 4.1 MP1
  by Dmitry Leskov (http://freshmeat.net/users/dleskov/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 05:56

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Excelsior JET is a Java VM enhanced with an Ahead-Of-Time (AOT)
compiler and deployment toolkit. It is certified Java Compatible on
Windows and Linux on Intel x86 hardware. Excelsior JET Optimizer
transforms your classes and JARs into high-performance binary
executables. Excelsior JET Runtime includes a licensed Sun implementation
of the Java API and Excelsior's proprietary JVM, which is responsible for
Java memory management, threading, synchronization, security, and JIT
compilation of classest that could not be precompiled. The Excelsior JET
Installation Toolkit makes it possible to prepare your optimized
application for deployment to end-user systems.

Changes: Excelsior JET itself and all but a few optimized applications did
not work under Windows XP SP2 or Windows 2003 Server SP1 on AMD64/EM64T
systems with hardware Data Execution Prevention (DEP) enabled. EJB3 and
JBoss 4.0.3 and up did not work due to a flaw in the implementation of
annotations. 32-bit color icons could not be selected in JET Control
Panel. On some projects, Excelsior JET could possibly hang for several
minutes during compilation with CPU usage at 100% and the progress
indicator at 0%. All of these problems were fixed.

[025] - fairly fast packet filter 1.5.0
  by Willem de Bruijn (http://freshmeat.net/users/wdebruij/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 11:32

System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: FFPF is a stream-based networking subsystem for Linux that spans
from hardware to userspace to offer high-speed communication paths
tailored to individual applications. It transparently supports specialized
hardware resources and in-kernel processing through safe functional units.
The base system comes bundled with functions for pattern matching (Aho
Corasick, RegEx), accounting, selection (BPF and FPL), stream reassembly,
and more. Applications can request graphs of functions to preprocess their
data. Obvious uses are intrusion detection, network address translation,
and media streaming.

Changes: The most fundamental additions are TCP stream reassembly and
accompanying continuous stream handling (as opposed to only per-packet).
Additionally, the framework has been overhauled to squash hard-to-reach
bugs, allow more complex processing and increased performance.

[026] - FBZX 1.6
  by Raster (http://freshmeat.net/users/scostas/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 16:24

System :: Emulators

About: FBZX is another Sinclair Spectrum emulator for Linux, but with an
special feature: it works with the framebuffer, so it can work at full
speed and full screen. Its main features are extremely accurate emulation
of screen and sound (both speaker and AY-3-8912 sound chip), emulation of
joysticks (kempston, cursor, and Sinclair), and emulation of 48K (both
issue 2 and issue 3), classic 128K, Plus 2, and Plus 2A. It supports Z80
snapshot files (both loading and saving) and TAP files (allowing normal
loading or fast-speed loading).

Changes: This release fixes a stupid bug that could crash FBZX. It adds
support for rotated 480x640 screens (like PDAs). It adds direct support
for 8, 16, 24, and 32 bpp (more performance), contended memory emulation,
support for ',' and '.' keys, a fullscreen X11 mode, a picture with the
keyboard layout, and support for computers without function keys. It asks
for confirmation before exiting. The version number has been fixed.

About: Ghost In The Mail (also known as gitmail) is a very simple
graphical email client for Linux. It allows you to send email with
attached files (using MIME and Base64 specifications). It can be used with
low capacity hardware thanks to its minimal resources needs.

Changes: A full review of the code in order to improve stability and
performance. A rewrite of all functions that contained malloc(CONST_VAL).
The functions gitm_malloc and gitm_realloc that check pointers after
allocating them have been added. Some commentary to describe functions.
New sources files: functions are distributed into files in a more logical
way. Files cbbentries.* are removed (functions in cbbentries.* are now in
history.*) Better core/GUI splitting. A constant GITM_VERSION to hold the
version number. MIME boundary is now randomly generated. Server errors are
fully displayed.

  by balamm (http://freshmeat.net/users/balamm/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 23:44

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Gif Disassembler is a Web script that lets you upload any GIF
animation and will attempt to return the individual frames, along with the
image information from your animation. That info can then be used to
reassemble the animation after frame editing.

Changes: The permitted file upload size was lowered to 250KB. A redundant
file size check was added prior to image processing. Existing upload size
limits were not being enforced, which caused ImageMagick to consume all
available server memory. Only the index.php file in the temp folder is
affected. Updating is recommended.

[037] - Ibis 1.3
  by Rob van Nieuwpoort (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvannieuwpoort/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 07:03

Scientific/Engineering
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking

About: Ibis is an efficient and flexible Java-based programming
environment for Grid computing, in particular for distributed
supercomputing applications. It boosts RMI performance using several
optimizations, especially to avoid the high overhead of runtime type
inspection that current RMI implementations have. It therefore comes with
a highly efficient serialization implementation. The project also
addresses the lack of expressiveness of Java RMI, which provides only
synchronous client-server communication.

Changes: This release adds MPJ/Ibis, a pure Java implementation of the MPJ
programming interface that has been defined by the Java Grande forum to
provide MPI-like message passing for Java applications. Shared objects for
Satin were added. This is a replacement (and major improvement) of the
TupleSpace. The TupleSpace is still there, but it is deprecated and will
probably not be there anymore in the next Ibis release. The connection
setup code was improved and rewritten. Various scalability issues were
fixed, mostly in the nameserver. Ibis now scales up to at least a thousand
nodes.

  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 23:47

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The MIME Email message class composes and sends MIME encoded email
messages. It features user-definable headers and body parts, support for
plain text and HTML body, headers with non-ASCII text, HTML messages with
embedded images, file attachments with content type detection, forwarding
of messages as attachments, setting the error delivery address with the
Return-Path header, and sub-classes for different delivery methods: mail,
SMTP, Qmail, Sendmail, and Microsoft IIS or Exchange pickup folder. It
also supports sending personalized bulk mail by replacing the message
parts that differ for each recipient.

Changes: The encoding of header values using q-encoding was fixed to

About: MTX is a set of programs for controlling tape drives and the
robotic mechanism of autoloaders and tape libraries.

Changes: This release changes to using the SG_IO ioctl on Linux rather
than the write/read SG interface, adds a test for SG version to make sure
that the version of the SG driver it's running against is what it was
compiled to handle, and has some code cleanups. The main mtx tool (as
compared to other programs in the tarball) should be fairly stable, but
please test carefully before rolling this version into production.

[052] - MultiTail 3.9.6 (Development)
  by Folkert van Heusden (http://freshmeat.net/users/fvh/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 11:36

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: This release adds color schemes for Oracle and ntpd. It can check
whether values in the input are lesser, greater, or equal, and choose a
color based on the outcome. Scrolling left/right has been added to the
scrollback menu. One can now set the linewrap from within multitail; if
there are more color schemes than will fit in one view, it will scroll.
The "write script" functionality has been rewritten to include all command
line parameters. Previous versions would segfault on black and white
terminals. Scrolling up and down in the scrollback menu has been fixed.

  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 15:39

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: NLog is a .NET logging library designed with simplicity and
flexibility in mind. With NLog you can process diagnostic messages emitted
from any .NET language, augment them with contextual information, format
them according to your preference, and send them to one or more targets.
The API (application programming interface) is similar to log4net, and the
configuration is very simple. NLog uses a routing table while log4net uses
a logger hierarchy with attachable ppenders. This makes NLog's
configuration very easy to read and maintain.

Changes: This release adds a new Trace level, which is more verbose than
the Debug level. It adds a new conditions language that lets you write
powerful filtering conditions while keeping the syntax natural and
readable. It adds a global log threshold and configurability at the config
level. it adds support for variables in configuration files. It adds an
infrastructure for compound targets and wrapper targets. It adds detailed
documentation with examples for many targets, both on the Web site and in
the help file.

[082] - SSH Filesystem 1.5
  by Miklos Szeredi (http://freshmeat.net/users/mszeredi/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 06:57

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Filesystems

About: SSH Filesystem uses the SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), which is
supported by most SSH servers. It is based on Filesystem in Userspace
(FUSE), and hence root privilege is not required for mounting a remote
filesystem. No setup is necessary and it is very easy to use.

Changes: Due to a bug in all known OpenSSH versions, download speeds with
sftp and sshfs could suffer considerably, depending on the circumstances.
This release contains a workaround for this, so throughput in both
directions should now match that of scp.

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups
to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables
software developers to create new communication tools with built-in
privacy features. It provides the foundation for a range of applications
that allow organizations and individuals to share information over
public networks without compromising their privacy. Individuals can use
it to keep remote Websites from tracking them and their family members.
They can also use it to connect to resources such as news sites or
instant messaging services that are blocked by their local Internet
service providers (ISPs).

Changes: This version fixes a crash bug for servers that enable
hibernation. Windows servers now scale better. The bandwidth overhead from
the old-style directory protocol is reduced. Both clients and servers are
encouraged to upgrade.

for setting text attributes, and a powerful, dynamic list box that handles
a mix of widget types. It is flexible, modular, and leaves the developer in
control.

Changes: This is the first release with UTF-8 input and display support. A
new raw_display module was added to enable UTF-8 display. This module also

[095] - Validate_fields Class 1.34
  by olaf (http://freshmeat.net/users/olaf2/)
  Mon, Feb 20th 2006 05:52

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The Validate_fields Class is an easy-to-use form field validation
PHP script. This class can be used to validate database inputs or mail
forms. It can validate simple text, numbers, dates, urls, email addresses,
and the presence of HTML tags. Invalid form fields will be reported inside
a detailed error message.

Changes: A small improvement in the create_msg() method makes it possible
to switch between the XHTML version and the simple HTML version. In the
fields array one key was named "name", and it has been renamed to "value"
to make it more clear. The variable declarations at the beginning of the
validation method was removed. Because the value of a checkbox (radio)
type field is only available if the element is checked, there are new
functions to validate this elements.
