[004] - amavisd-new 2.4.0
by Mark Martinec (http://freshmeat.net/users/mmartinec/)
Mon, Apr 3rd 2006 11:14
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: amavisd-new is a high-performance and reliable interface between
MTAs and one or more content checkers, including virus scanners, and/or
the Mail::SpamAssassin Perl module. It talks to an MTA via (E)SMTP or
LMTP, or by using helper programs. No timing gaps exist in the design,
which could cause a mail loss. It is normally positioned at or near a
central mailer, not necessarily where the user's mailboxes and final
delivery takes place.
Changes: Delivery status notifications (DSN) are now supported, both as an
SMTP protocol extension and in notifications. Header fields like X-Amavis
and X-Spam are now treated as mail headers for DomainKeys compatibility.
Configuration variables can be chosen based on the mail contents category,
which is now represented explicitly. A built-in macro expander is enhanced,
providing new macros and call types. Support has been added for passive
operating system fingerprinting with the use of p0f, supplying collected
information as a header field to SpamAssassin. Compatibility with
Net::Server 0.91 and later is provided.

Mon, Apr 3rd 2006 11:16
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: AMIDI-Plug is a MIDI input plugin for XMMS/BMP/Audacious. It
processes MIDI files and sends their events to one or more ALSA sequencer
client ports. Any hardware or software synthesizer, as long as it provides
ALSA sequencer ports, can be used to play MIDI with AMIDI-Plug. Playback is
fully functional: play, stop, seek, pause, and song information are
available. For example, AMIDI-Plug can send MIDI to the emu10k1 hardware
synth or to software synths such as timidity and fluidsynth. AMIDI-Plug
supports MIDI files in SMF (Standard MIDI File) format type 0 and type 1,
as well as RIFF MIDI containing SMF 0 and 1.
Changes: This release adds an option to pre-calculate the length of each
MIDI file (when get_song_info is called, i.e. when files are added in a
playlist). A volume checking function has been added (LIRC and other
remote control plugins should work correctly when changing volume now).
There are internal improvements and fixes.

[014] - DictEm 0.7
by Aleksey Cheusov (http://freshmeat.net/users/vle/)
Mon, Apr 3rd 2006 08:25
About: DictEm is an extremely customizable DICT client for (X)Emacs. It
implements all functions of the client part of the DICT protocol
(RFC-2229). Unlike dictionary.el, it widely uses autocompletion that is
used for selecting a dictionary and search strategy. It provides several
hooks that may be used for buffer postprocessing. Built-in hyperlinking
and a highlighting mechanism are based on this ability. It supports the
mechanism of virtual dictionaries that can be used for grouping
dictionaries from different DICT servers into the client-side virtual
dictionary.
Changes: DICTEM can handle dictionaries defined by the user. This allows
dictem to be used not only for accessing DICT servers, but also for
accessing a user's databases. The dictem-client-prog-args-list variable
was added, which keeps a list of additional arguments to the command line
"dict" client. The dictem-option-mime variable was added. The
dictem-run-show-strategies function was added, and is similar to
dictem-run-show-databases.

About: HSC (HTML Sucks Completely) is a developer tool for HTML projects.
It is mainly intended for creating and maintaining larger Web sites, with
a focus on compact and standards-conforming code. Its source texts are
HTML files that use an extended syntax allowing for macros, conditionals,
variables, expressions, etc. These sources are transformed into static
(X)HTML pages. HSC checks the result for many common errors such as
missing end tags and nesting mistakes, both in the markup and, to a
limited extent, in CSS. As a commandline tool, it can be used together
with "make", and a dependency generator is included. The macro library
features things like navigation menus, LaTeX-style sections, footnotes and
bibliographies, semiautomatic table-based layout, and database/scripting
interfaces.

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
About: Koppermine is a KDE client for Coppermine Photo Gallery. Koppermine
allows you to upload multiple images from the desktop to your Coppermine
installation. Koppermine allows you to upload multiple photos to your
Coppermine installation and to add information for each photo (like title,
description, and keywords). It displays a list of categories and albums
from your Coppermine installation and allows you to choose an album where
you want to upload the photos. Currently, uploads can be done only to
public category albums.
Changes: Support for saving multiple server settings was added. A user can
then choose the server to uplaod the files. Support for uploading images to
different albums was added. If no album is selected, the default album
given in settings is used. Support for resizing the images before
uploading was added. The application tries to retain the aspect ratio of
the image while resizing. A "Whats This?" help system was added.

Mon, Apr 3rd 2006 14:35
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.
Changes: Adds a colors cheme for log4j, Lines ending with '\' can now be
reconnected into one line. When multitail switches from one log file to
the other in one window, a marker line can be printed (like the original
tail does). A couple of segfaults have been fixed. There are some fixes in
the "write script" functionality, and fixes for CygWin compilation issues.
Scrolling in the scrollback window has been improved. The example
multitail.conf is now copied to multitail.conf.new so that your own
personalized version is not overwritten.

About: Qmail-Scanner, (also known as scan4virus) is an addon that enables
a Qmail Email server to scan all gatewayed Email for certain
characteristics. It is typically used for its anti-virus protection
functions, in which case it is used in conjunction with commercial virus
scanners. but also enables a site to react to Email (at a server/site
level) that contains specific strings in particular headers, or particular
attachment filenames or types (e.g. *.VBS attachments). It also can be used
as an archiving tool for auditing or backup purposes. Qmail-Scanner is
integrated into the mail server at a lower level than some other
Unix-based virus scanners, resulting in better performance. It is capable
of scanning not only locally sent/received Email, but also Email that
crosses the server in a relay capacity. It also has SpamAssassin support.
Changes: Many changes were made, including the ability to quarantine
high-scoring spam along with viruses and policy blocks, a new format for

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: Unimaginatively-named Calendar produces useful, printable calendars
on a Web site. It draws nice, stretchy bars across multi-day events, so you
can understand what's going on. It puts all of the information you enter
onto one screen, so you can print it. The printed copy is just as usable
as the on-screen version. It allows you to schedule a single event on
multiple, arbitrary dates (even if they don't form a pattern). It supports
repeating events and private calendars, and allows iCal/Sunbird users to
subscribe. It allows you to categorize events and limit what the user sees
using themes.
Changes: Some code cleanup and some bugfixes. See the new UPGRADING.txt
file for instructions on upgrading an existing installation. Multiple
submissions are prevented within the admin tool (imagine clicking "Save",
then refreshing the page). The iCal subscription feature has been fixed to
actually produce a file iCal can import. The way categories are selected in
the admin tool after an edit has been fixed so that it makes sense.
