Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Hash, and Least
Resource) and a customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It
supports VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to set up high
availability configurations on multiple nodes. It integrates pcap packet
dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge". It supports "all service load
balancing" based on client IP address which allows almost any protocol to
be supported. It supports single legged operations, either on IP-Level or
as DSR (Direct Server Return / "nPath") configuration.
Changes: SNMP support was added, introducing the BalanceNG MIB. BalanceNG
now integrates nicely into the standard Net-SNMP environment on Linux and
Solaris 10. A new command ("softdisable") has been added that allows you
to remove a target softly from the load balancing distribution. The manual
has been updated to release 1.503.0.

by constans (http://freshmeat.net/users/constans/)
Sun, Apr 2nd 2006 17:59
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX
About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.
Changes: This release fixes some issues found regarding the internal
<<NewLine>> tag on Mac OS X platforms. It is expected that cb2Bib regular
expressions will be more transferable among different platforms, although
some minor changes might be required for older expressions.

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: Crossfire+ is a friendly fork of the crossfire multi-user RPG game.
Unlike the original project, it focuses mainly on stability and
playability, while also adding more maps and better scriptability and
graphics.
Changes: The map editor now features auto-joining and a large number of
minor bugfixes. The server underwent some rebalancing: draining effects
have been severely reduced, and playerkilling is now only possible when
both players are hostile. Furthermore, rods are now limited to the
use_magic_item level of the caster (plus a rod-dependent bonus so that
high-level rods are still worthwhile for lower-level players). Staffs and
wands stay as they are, so they can potentially become more useful again.
A generic Perl evaluation event plug-in is available to map builders now.

Sun, Apr 2nd 2006 00:46
Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.

legacy systems that need full-text search, without changing existing
systems. It's based on the high-performance Lucene API. All parameters are
configurable through Web UI for configuring data retrieval, content
indexing, and displaying templates.
Changes: Bugfixes were made for MySQL. getColumnLabel() is used instead of
getColumnName() for MySQL. The setFetchSize exception thrown by MySQL in
some drivers is now caught. An indexing startup error which occurred when
directory names have empty space was fixed.

by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
Sun, Apr 2nd 2006 07:19
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: GeneRecon is a software package for linkage disequilibrium mapping
using coalescent theory. It is based on a Bayesian Markov-chain Monte
Carlo (MCMC) method for fine-scale linkage-disequilibrium gene mapping
using high-density marker maps. GeneRecon explicitly models the genealogy
of a sample of the case chromosomes in the vicinity of a disease locus.
Given case and control data in the form of genotype or haplotype
information, it estimates a number of parameters, most importantly, the
disease position.
Changes: This version fixes an incorrect prior on the coalescent tree that
resulted in very long convergence times. The fix greatly improves both
accuracy and number of iterations needed for accurate mapping.

balancer which provides cookie-based persistence, automatic failover,
run-time regex-based header control, advanced logging contents to help
trouble-shooting buggy applications and/or networks, and a few other
features. Its own event-driven state machine achieves 10,000 hits per
second on modern hardware, even with thousands of simultaneous
connections. It currently lacks SSL and keep-alive, both of which are
planned.
Changes: Many fixes since 1.2.8. The epoll code was so broken that it's
amazing it worked at all. Enhancements in health checks scheduling. Hot
reconfiguration facilities, source-based load balancing, automatic
limiting of file-descriptors, support for load-balanced backup servers,
and support for multi-line headers. Many code cleanups.

[031] - Kalva 0.8.75
by Seebaer (http://freshmeat.net/users/Seebaer/)
Sun, Apr 2nd 2006 17:52
Multimedia :: Video :: Capture
About: Kalva is a KDE video recorder that is simple to use and easy to
setup. You can use it to schedule a single movie recording by choosing the
date from a calendar. A serial recording may be scheduled by choosing the
days of the week. You can store recording options in various profiles for
different hardware and quality levels. Kalva can import channellists from
programs like xawtv or xawtv4, and can generate a new one using scantv.
Changes: The profiles and the channel list are configurable from the main
window; there is no longer a need to open the prefs dialog for each
recording session if You want to use a special profile set. There is no
need for a channel to be set when recording from composite (i.e. input =
1). A bug has been fixed in the movie manager when the daytime contains
the searched string (the filter regex was too aggressive). Initial code
cleanups. Improved file handling. Fixes for some syntax issues.

About: Kat's Sudoku is a simple helper program for solving Sudoku puzzles.
It starts with an empty board and prints all possible numbers in each
field. After setting a certain field to a number, it deletes all
occurrences of this number in the corresponding row/column/block so that
scanning of rows/columns/blocks for possible entries is unnecessary.
Otherwise, there is no logic, which means that finding the solution is

[055] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 5.6
by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
Sun, Apr 2nd 2006 00:35
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into C,
C++, Objective-C, or D code. It allows the programmer to embed actions at
any point in a regular language and to control non-determinism in the
resulting machines. It understands concatenation, union, kleene star,
subtraction, intersection, epsilon transitions, and various other common
operators. Through the use of labels and epsilon transitions, Ragel
supports the building of state machines using a named state and associated
transition list paradigm. Its finite state machines are closed under all of
its operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular languages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.
Changes: A left-guarded concatenation operator was added. This operator
"<:" is equivalent to ( expr1 $1 . expr2 >0 ). It is useful if you want to
prefix a sequence with another sequence of a subset of the main sequence.
Dead code was eliminated and documentation was updated.
