Despite begging, cajoling, writing FAQs, and renaming our "report problem"
link to "broken links", we've never been able to convince everyone that
http://freshmeat.net/contact/ is for writing us with problems with
freshmeat itself. We still get a few messages each day from people asking
why BloggyBlog 3.17 won't post their parakeet photos or telling us about
misspellings in the Swedish translation of our firewall script. Until now,
we've had to express our regret that we only list information about the
40,000 projects on our site, and can't provide tech support for them all.
Today, we're happy to announce that's all changing.

[010] - Construct 1.10
by ganges master (http://freshmeat.net/users/gangesmaster/)
Sat, Apr 1st 2006 10:53
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Construct is a Python library for declaratively defining arbitrary
data structures, called "constructs". These constructs can both parse data
into an object or build an object into data. Constructs work at the
bit-level, so there are no issues with byte-alignment. It supports fields,
structs, unions, and repeaters; adapters and validators; switches,
pointers, and other meta-constructs, like TLVs. Many primitives are
provided, as well as an "inventory" of ready-made protocols and file
format parsers.
Changes: New features include Embed, Pass, If, IfThenElse, LazyBind,
Float, and get_size(). RepeaterError and NoDefaultCaseError were defined.
LV was improved. TLV was removed. LazyBind now allows recursive
definitions. Float only supports parsing and not building, since it's too
complicated.

Sat, Apr 1st 2006 11:49
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
About: gnormalize is a front end to the "normalize" tool, a ripper, an
encoder, and an audio converter. It decodes MP3, MP4 (or M4A or AAC), MPC
(or MPP or MP+), OGG, APE, or FLAC files to wave, then normalizes the wave
and re-encodes it. It can also rip audio CDs, encode audio data, convert
audio formats between MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, APE, and FLAC, and change the
encoding properties and edit Meta Info (like title, artist, album, etc.)
of the final normalized files.
Changes: The possibility to change the Remaining Time color was added. A

[018] - Gnumeric 1.6.3 (Stable)
by J.H.M. Dassen (Ray) (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdassen/)
Sat, Apr 1st 2006 00:14
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
About: Gnumeric is a powerful and easy to use spreadsheet using GNOME. Its
goal is to provide a full featured spreadsheet and a smooth migration path
for people and organizations currently using proprietary applications. It
provides more sheet functions and greatly improved accuracy when compared
to Microsoft's Excel. A plugin system lets you extend Gnumeric, adding
functions, I/O formats, and real time data capabilities. The existing
Python, Guile, and Perl plugins let you define complex functions. Gnumeric
is capable of reading and writing MS Excel, and reading Lotus, Applix,
Quattro Pro, OpenCalc, XBase, DIF, SYLK, HTML, Psion, MPS, oleo, sc, misc.
text formats, and its native XML. It can also generate Latex, HTML, and
others.
Changes: This release fixed the exporting of scaled axes, XLS import of
pie outlines, printing when the sheet is zoomed, DBF import, an stf text
import speed regression, XIRR issues, a printing issue with wrapped,
right-aligned text, and the position of the cursor after F2. Adding an
autofilter now dirties the sheet. XML and XLS saving/loading of
"protected" attributes was added.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing
About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.
Changes: The "View Student Activity" functionality now processes 30 to 60
times faster than before. Courses that have a large number of conditions
are processed faster. The system deals better with concurrent access to
data files. The search mechanism once again catalogs all online resources
in a given domain. In anonymous grading of bubble sheet exams, the
identifying CODEs are checked for uniqueness. Uploading of CSV files with
grades now correctly ignores blank lines.

Changes: This release fixes a couple of important bugs. The "-m" option
was broken, and the EXCLUDE paths were not always taken into account.
There were also some minor bugs in gpaco and paco that were fixed. There

About: Sdictionary is a dictionary that uses its own dictionary format.
Unlike ptkdic or gtkdic, MySQL isn't needed; you can work with dictionary
files directly. It uses Unicode, meaning that words and articles all are
in UTF-8. There are two index levels, compression, and tools to convert
from text files to .dct and vice versa. A Perl/Tk version, libsdict, a C
library framework, and a Symbian version are available.
Changes: Some small bugs were fixed. Multiple dictionary directories are
implemented. Word selection is now cleared when 'Left' is pressed. There
were also code cleanups and some small fixes.

Information Management :: Document Repositories
About: SiSU (Structured information, Serialized Units) is a command line
driven document creation and management framework. With minimal markup of
a plaintext file, it produces: plain-text, HTML, XHTML, XML, ODF
(OpenDocument), LaTeX, PDF, and populates an SQL database (PostgreSQL or
SQLite) at an object/paragraph level for "atomic searches". Prepare
documents using your text editor of choice, then use SiSU to generate the
desired output formats. A vim syntax highlighting file for SiSU markup is
provided.

with (a)synchronous replay support. It runs on Linux, FreeBSD/PCBSD,
OpenBSD, and NetBSD.
Changes: Polling functions were added to the BSD rpldevs. This fixes high
CPU usage (which is due to the implementation of pthreads on OpenBSD)
observed with rpld/OpenBSD.
