[006] - bit 0.2.0
  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 22:51

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: bit is a library that makes it easier to dynamically manipulate
data buffers containing fields that do not have octet (byte) boundaries.
An example is the IP header, which is generally dealt with at compile time
via bit fields in a structure. A key feature of the bit library is support
for loading data formats described in XML files and dynamically parsing
those fields at run time. This library was initially created to support
reading various kinds of robotic device I/O (IR sensors, motors), but it
has also been used for run time parsing of IP, TCP, UDP, and RTP headers.

Changes: Significant changes were made to the Record/Field layout classes
and XML interface, including initial support for typed fields. The field
and record concepts were extended to support vectors as well. The Buffer
class was cleaned up, and extensive unit tests based on cppunit are now
available. Finally, the bitgtkmm library has been split into a separate
project.

[009] - Books 3.0alpha10
  by Chris Karr (http://freshmeat.net/users/cjkarr/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 00:20

Utilities

About: Books stores, sorts, and searches a "virtual card catalog" for a
personal library. It makes it simple to enter new books, edit the
information of older books, and sort the books by attributes such as title
and author. Books also includes built-in searching for quick book
information retrieval, and XML support for importing and exporting
collection information in HTML and XML.

Changes: This release introduces new plugins that allow users to export
book data as PDF files and J2ME midlets. A number of fixes were made to
the Quickfill plugins, including adding Library of Congress Control Number
lookups. The main app was extended to allow file associations with records
and the Quickfill interface was altered to allow user cancellation.

[013] - Conary 1.0.11
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 21:45

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: User definitions can include hashed passwords. The --replace-file
option has several file management bugs fixed, including fixes involving
rollbacks. The new ccs2tar script converts a changeset into a tar archive.

[014] - contenite 0.30-beta1
  by contAire (http://freshmeat.net/users/contaire/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 18:02

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: contenite is an embedded content management system that makes it
easy to update Web sites. It includes a number of content types that are
extensible through a simple, object-oriented programming interface. Its
architecture makes it well suited for brochure sites with little
interaction and few editors. It works well for adding a little extra
flexibility to an existing CMS and doesn't insist on managing complete
pages, though it can be used to manage an entire site.

Changes: A new, stream-based access mechanism to its internals allows you
to distribute the CMS as a single file. A management console gives
centralized access to content objects. The standard configuration is to
use MySQL-based storage. The file-based storage is still there and can be
configured in as an alternative. This release works with PHP5. PHPTAL is
no longer included. As an alternative, a simple PHP template engine is
integrated. A simple controller framework has been integrated to support
MVC-based Web site construction.

Vim's own extensibility to improve menus, keyboard shortcuts, and editing
behavior. Cream seamlessly maintains Vim's insertmode to access all the
power of the original Vim plus many custom Cream extensions.

Changes: This minor release features a new Print Selection feature, a

[016] - DenyHosts 2.3
  by Phil Schwartz (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_schwartz/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 01:11

About: DenyHosts is a script intended to help Linux system administrators
thwart ssh server attacks. DenyHosts scans an ssh server log, updates
/etc/hosts.deny after a configurable number of failed attempts from a
rogue host is determined, and alerts the administrator of any suspicious
logins.

Changes: This release fixes a potential security problem which previously
ignored purged denied hosts when they should have been re-added (unless
the daemon was restarted). DenyHosts daemon-mode users are urged to
upgrade to this release.

  by dotDefender (http://freshmeat.net/users/dotdefender/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 03:00

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: dotDefender secures Web sites against a broad range of HTTP-based
attacks, including session attacks (e.g. denial of service), Web
application attacks (e.g. SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and known
attack signatures), as well as requests originating from known attack
sources (e.g. spammer bots and compromised servers). dotDefender installs
within moments on the Web server along with a predefined, configurable
rule-base, enabling it to secure the Web environment from the moment it is
deployed, with virtually no administrator intervention.

Changes: A log description fix was made. All logs set as default may be

[019] - Dual DHCP DNS Server 2.0
  by Achal Dhir (http://freshmeat.net/users/achaldhir/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 01:11

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
System :: Networking

About: Dual DHCP DNS Server is a combined DHCP/DNS server for small LANs.
Dynamic DHCP allocates/renews host addresses, while the caching DNS server
first tries resolving from DHCP-allotted names, then from cache, and only
then forwarding to external DNS servers. It has built in dynamic updates,
and also supports BOOTP PXE network booting and client specific options.
It is self-configuring, doesn't require the creation of zone files, and
uses little memory and CPU.

Changes: This version supports aliases, MX-records, and Zone Web Servers.
The DHCP functionality now supports client specific options and Hex
options.

  by Sebastiano Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/vigna/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 10:54

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: fastutil extends the Java Collections Framework by providing
type-specific maps, sets, lists, and queues for Java with a small memory
footprint and fast access and insertion; it also includes a fast I/O API
for binary and text files. The classes implement their standard
counterpart interfaces (e.g., Map for maps) and can be plugged into
existing code. Besides the usual features, fastutil provides
reference-based containers (which do not use equals() to compare objects)
and linked structures. Most iterators provided by fastutil classes are
bidirectional, or even implement the standard list iterator interface.

Changes: A pernicious bug in BinIO, which affected all methods allocating
arrays, has been fixed.

About: jDTAUS is a Java implementation of the German DTAUS file format as
specified by Zentraler Kreditausschuss. It implements the DTAUS
specification version 2.0 (dated November 2005). The API was written with
mass-data support in mind and provides all possible kinds of operations on
a DTAUS file. Performance or memory critical sections of the code can be
hand-tuned via a property file without rebuilding the code. The API is
based on an abstraction layer for I/O operations, so implementations can
be adopted to other persistence mechanisms.

  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 02:53

Office/Business
Utilities

About: kchmviewer is a CHM (Winhelp) files viewer written in Qt/ KDE. It
can be build as a stand-alone Qt-based application or a KDE application.
The main point is compatibility with non-English CHM files, including most
international character sets. It has the features set of standard viewer:
search (including non-English CHMs), bookmarking, font size changing,
index/content browsing, codepage support, and more.

Changes: Support for tabbed browsing was added. You can now open pages in
new tabs by using the appropriate items in the right-click context menu,
or by using the Shift-click and Ctrl-click shortcuts. Tooltips were added
to show the whole string in content, index, and search windows if those
strings are truncated by view. Bookmarks are now also shown in the menu.
Back-forward navigation now stores not only the page, but also the cursor
position. An "Extract CHM content" feature was added. A lot of bugs were
fixed.

  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 10:55

System :: Operating System Kernels
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static type
checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

Changes: A serious bug in the signal handling routine on AMD-64 was fixed.
Bugs that prevented kernel compilation for IA-32 and AMD-64 were fixed.
This version has been merged with the 2.6.16 Linux kernel.

[035] - KernelKit 0.4.4
  by Michael Opdenacker (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelo/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 21:53

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based

About: KernelKit is a Knoppix derivative dedicated to developers of Linux
device drivers and Free Software embedded systems. In particular, it
includes uClibc cross-compiling toolchains for several embedded
architectures (currently arm, armeb, i386, mips, mipsel, PPC, m68k and
sh4) and emulators (currently qemu and SkyEye). It can be used for
demonstration or training purposes, or by developers who cannot install
GNU/Linux on their workstations.

Changes: This release adds the following new packages: nfs-user-server
(2.2beta47-22), subversion (1.2.3dfsg1-3), and gxemul (0.3.8-1). It also
ships with calcc 0.1.1, a 32 and 64 bit number calculator and converter.
It fixes the hand-made install of qemu, which lacked the /etc/qemu-ifup
script. The default Knoppix bookmarks were replaced with more useful ones
(particularly a link to LXR Web sites). The uClibc toolchains were
updated.

[070] - Rhizome Wiki 0.6.0

  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 01:04

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Wiki
Text Processing :: Markup :: XSL/XSLT

About: Rhizome is a Wiki-like content management and delivery system that
exposes the entire site including content, structure, and metadata as
editable RDF. This means that instead of creating a site with URLs that
correspond to a page of HTML, you can create URLs that represent just
about anything. It was designed to enable non-technical users to create
these representations in an easy, ad-hoc manner. For developers, this
allows both content and structure to be easily repurposed and complex Web
 applications to be rapidly developed.

Changes: This release adds "shredding": a framework (including GRDDL
support) for extracting RDF from content and maintaining the relationship
between them over time. It also includes better support for viewing and
editing RDF directly with most RDF formats. There are also several UI
enhancements, including a new UI for managing users and roles, more Wiki
features, and page and comment spam detection via the Akismet service.
Last but not least, it is several times faster than previous releases.

  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 01:02

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Rx4RDF is a set of technologies designed to make W3C's RDF less
complex and easier to use. It includes RxPath, which enables one to use
familar XML technologies like XPath, XSLT, and XUpdate to query,
transform and update an RDF model, Raccoon, an application server that
uses an RDF model for its data store and RxPath to translate arbitrary
requests to RDF resources, and ZML and RxML, alternative text formats for
XML and RDF that were designed to allow novices to write XML and RDF with
(nearly) the same ease as a Wiki entry.

Changes: The RxPath data engine now uses a simple but optimizing query
engine and is much faster. It also now supports RDF named graphs (RDF
contexts). It is now easier to use RxPath in XML contexts, such as an XSLT
page. Other improvements include better support for 3rd-party RDF libraries
and RDF stores. Finally, Rhizome-Wiki has many new features based on these
changes.

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: A function to close a graph_file was added. The drw_win.c driver
was extended to support writing graphic text under windows. The parse
operator for bitsets was defined (therefore reading of bitsets is allowed
now). The hashCode and compare functions have been added to allow hash

About: The SMS Server Tools (smstools) were made to send and receive SMS
from one or many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some
sample scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL
database. The daemon waits for files in an outgoing spool directory and
sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification. This
software support text messages in 7 and 16 bits (UCS2), as well as 8 bit

  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 21:37

System :: Systems Administration

About: VNCTracker is a tool to keep track of mostly dynamic hosts on
various dial-up accounts. Rather than call each user whenever you need a
current IP address for connecting with VNC, you visit the Web page
generated by VNCTracker which shows the updated IP address for that host.
You can then build .vnc files for easily starting VNC with the settings to
connect to the host.

Changes: The date on top of showip.php was changed. The "Remove Host" link
in the table was added. Code cleanup and logic changes were made. The
verbose option now works. config.cfg and config.php now hold all options.

[094] - Zort 1.0.1
  by CJ (http://freshmeat.net/users/darkglassdolleyes/)
  Wed, Apr 5th 2006 21:40

About: Zort is a Web-based RSS aggregator based on MagpieRSS. It features
a clean, minimal interface, some nice CSS/Javascript to hide
feeds/categories you don't want to look at, and all the usual caching,
etc., you'd expect from a MagpieRSS-based app. By default, all feeds are
returned on a single page. It does not feature a database backend, support
for multiple users, a set of administrative screens, an authentication
system of any kind, or flagging of RSS items as read/saved/etc., nor is it
likely to include those things in the future. It was written in a very
minimalistic frame of mind, and such features are on an explicit "do not
support" list.

Changes: This release features improved support for Atom feeds (Atom text
will now properly show up), improved support for Opera (previously there
were some artifacts while hiding areas of the screen), improved handling
of in-feed images, and other various CSS and interface tweaks. This
release was also tested against a wide variety of browsers to make sure
everything was valid. The only browser requiring code changes was Opera.
