Communications :: BBS

About: alph implements and analyzes historical and traditional ciphers and
codes, such as polyalphabetic, substitutional, and mixed employing
human-reconstructable algorithms. It provides a pipe filter interface in
order to encrypt and decrypt block text to achieve transparency. The
program is meant to be used in conjunction with external programs that
transfer data, resulting in transparent encryption or decryption of
information. The program can thus be used as a mail filter, IRC filter, IM
filter, and so on.

Changes: Two new cyphers were added, the Nihilist cypher and the M Del
Vayo. The latter implements the straddling checkerboard technique. The man
page was updated accordingly.

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Arphound is a tool that listens to all traffic on an ethernet
network interface. It reports IP/MAC address pairs as well as events such
as IP conflicts, IP changes, IP addresses with no RDNS, various ARP
spoofing, and packets not using the expected gateway. Reporting is done
to stdout, to a specified file, or to syslog in a format that can be
easily parsed by scripts.

Changes: Fixes many 'glitches' that prevented 1.3 from compiling with gcc
3 or 4. Fixes bugs that prevented arphound from running on 64-bit
architectures.

  by lausser (http://freshmeat.net/users/lausser/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 06:30

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: check_logfiles is a plugin for Nagios which checks logfiles for
defined patterns. It is capable of detecting logfile rotation. If you tell
it how the rotated archives look, it will also examine these files. Unlike
check_logfiles, traditional logfile plugins were not aware of the gap
which could occur, so under some circumstances they ignored what had
happened between their checks. A configuration file is used to specify
where to search, what to search, and what to do if a matching line is
found.

Changes: Minor modifications were made to tracing. Duplicate file
detection was added to prevent scanning the same file twice. Examples were
added to the README file with nagios configuration snippets.

  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 01:03

System :: Monitoring

About: collectd is a small daemon which collects system information every
10 seconds and writes the results in an RRD-file. The statistics gathered
include: CPU and memory usage, network interface traffic, and system
temperatures (using lm-sensors). In network mode, clients multicast their
values over the network to servers which write the RRD-files.

Changes: The harddisk-temperature plugin has been improved to handle
Linux's major-numbers more intelligently.

  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 10:54

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring

About: DirSync is a directory synchronizer that takes a source and
destination directory as arguments and recursively ensures that the two
directories are identical. It can be used to create incremental copies of
large chunks of data. For example, if your file server's contents are in
the directory /data, you can make a copy in a directory called /backup
with the command "dirsync /data /backup." The first time you run it, all
data will be copied. On subsequent runs, only the changed files are
copied.

Changes: This release fixes a bug, compiles on Sun, and adds support for
symbolic links.

[026] - HTMLatex beta-1.2
  by jayed (http://freshmeat.net/users/jayed/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 01:02

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: htmlatex does on-the-fly rendering of LaTeX source to HTML
documents. htmlatex is a mod_python application that uses memcached to
reduce the massive overhead of repeatedly rendering the same equation. It
has an option to sanitize the LaTeX source, removing any potentially
dangerous code. It is fairly generous about the HTML and LaTeX it accepts.
LaTeX source code is typed directly into an HTML file. The file is left
unchanged, and the output is filtered, replacing raw source with images.

Changes: Refactoring has resulted in much more stable performance. Unusual
changes no longer require restarting memcached. A special MIME-type
(.htmlx) is no longer required. HTML pages without equations are passed
through. HTMLatex is verified to work on mod_python 3.2.8 with Python 2.4.
Matrices have their own div-class and only require element and row
separators to be entered in the HTML file; the {equation*} and {matrix}
environments are automatic, as are the surrounding brackets.

  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 13:37

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing

About: K3b is a CD and DVD burning application for Linux systems optimized
for KDE. It provides a comfortable user interface to perform most CD/DVD
burning tasks, such as creating an audio CD from a set of audio files or
copying a CD. While the experienced user can influence all steps of the
burning process, the beginner may find comfort in the automatic settings
and the reasonable defaults which allow a quick start. The actual burning
is done by the command line utilities cdrecord, cdrdao, and growisofs.

Changes: Writes more metadata tags in the default setup of the external
encoder plugin. Fixes on-the-fly Video DVD creation. Fixes data project
verification in case filenames have to be shortened due to Joliet
limitations. Uses the -dvd-compat parameter to close DVDs in on-the-fly
mode. Fixes libdvdcss handling (again); there are no crashes anymore.
Fixes the "invalid URL" bug. Uses SG I/O for SCSI commands with newer
Linux kernels. This should fix problems with SCSI device detection. Warns
about shortened filenames due to Joliet restrictions before starting the
burning process.

  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 15:08

About: LDMUD is an LP-class MUD engine, meaning it is object-oriented,
with all object clases stored in unique files. The engine runs compiled
bytecode to manipulate those objects, and the underlying simulated
processor is a stack machine. It is a 3rd-generation LP-class MUD, being
derived from Amylaar, which in turn was derived from the original LPMud.
The game has no limitations on the nature of the game space other than the
limits of your coding.

Changes: This release adds support for International Domain Names and
SQLite. TLS is now more robust. There are numerous minor bugfixes, scoping

[039] - lesspipe.sh 1.53
  by Wolfgang Friebel (http://freshmeat.net/users/friebel/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 06:10

Text Processing

About: lesspipe.sh is an input filter for the pager less as described in
less's man page. The script runs under a ksh-compatible shell (ksh, bash,
zsh) and allows you to use less to view files with binary content,
compressed files, archives, and files contained in archives. Viewing files
by accessing a device file is implemented to some extent (DOS filesystems
and tar files). It supports many formats (both as plain and compressed
files using compress, gzip, bzip2, or zip). Syntax highlighting for many
languages is available through a helper script, "code2color".

Changes: lesspipe now includes support for viewing the contents of rar and
7-zip archives and to display an ASCII representation of the contents of
Openoffice documents. For images (PNG, GIF, JPEG, and other formats), the
file's format and characteristics are shown. Debian packages can now be
viewed without installing dpkg. Various small bugfixes and optimizations
were done. The documentation and the test suite have been enhanced.

  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 15:47

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Version Control

About: The LibXDiff library implements basic and yet complete
functionalities to create file differences/patches to both binary and text
files. It uses memory files as file abstraction to achieve both performance
and portability. For binary files, it implements (with some modification)
the algorithm described in "File System Support for Delta Compression" by
Joshua P. MacDonald. For text files, it follows directives described in
"An O(ND) Difference Algorithm and Its Variations" by Eugene W. Myers.
Memory files used by the library are basically a collection of buffers
that store the file content.

Changes: This release improves the text diff prepare stage to allow a
better selection of the lines to be marked as changed.

[043] - linSmith 0.9.5
  by John (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcoppens/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 11:01

Communications :: Ham Radio
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: linSmith is a Smith charting program. Users can enter either
discrete components or transmission lines, see the results on screen,
and/or generate Postscript output. Component values can be changed
numerically or using scrollbars. Problems can be solved on-screen, and
high-quality Postscript can be output for publication.

Changes: This release adds a 'Clear' button to the load and element lists.
It replaces the large 'Recalculate' button with a smaller version, and
moves it to the left. The Rotate list has been added to select rotation to
generator or to load. Note that though transmission lines already rotate
correctly, the connecting line is still wrong. Setting the Zo box on
startup caused errors in the (not yet existing) log_list. There is a minor
bugfix in the configuration window. After configuration, the chart must be
in non-logo mode, or else an error message is produced when trying to
update the SWR circle.

[049] - MIME Email message class 2006.04.10
  by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 00:57

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: The MIME Email message class composes and sends MIME encoded email
messages. It features user-definable headers and body parts, support for
plain text and HTML body, headers with non-ASCII text, HTML messages with
embedded images, file attachments with content type detection, forwarding
of messages as attachments, setting the error delivery address with the
Return-Path header, and sub-classes for different delivery methods: mail,
SMTP, Qmail, Sendmail, and Microsoft IIS or Exchange pickup folder. It
also supports sending personalized bulk mail by replacing the message
parts that differ for each recipient.

Changes: This release adds a couple of work-arounds to the encoding of
body message parts using quoted-printable to escape certain character
sequences that may cause certain buggy email clients to decode the
messages incorrectly. The workarounds escape lines starting with the dot
(.) character or the word "From".

[054] - Nuface 1.0.3
  by Vincent Deffontaines (http://freshmeat.net/users/gryzor/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 15:09

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Nuface is a Web-based administration tool that generates Edenwall,
NuFW, or simple Netfilter firewall rules. It features a high level
abstraction on the security policy set by the administrator, and works
internally on an XML data scheme. Its philosophy is to let you agglomerate
subjects, resources, or protocols into meta-objects, and use those meta
objects to generate ACLs, which are then interpreted as netfilter rules by
Nupyf, the internal XML parser. This tool may easily be extended to support
firewall implementations other than Netfilter.

Changes: Fixes a 1.0.0-rc4 small regression that prevented users from
using the "save to new file" feature.

[055] - octod 0.1
  by Diozaka (http://freshmeat.net/users/Diozaka/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 13:26

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Octod is a "download manager daemon", i.e. a daemon that listens at
the network interface for incoming download jobs and performs them
(simultaneously) in the background. It is intended to run on desktop
systems as a reliable and fast download manager without the overhead of a
graphical user interface, but it can also be used as a centralized
download station running in network environments with multiple users. To
control the daemon, an easy and self-explanatory network protocol has been
defined, so cross-platform, cross-language graphical clients (based on
ncurses, Qt, Gtk, or even HTML/PHP) can be implemented.

Changes: This release understands most of the commands from the network
protocol. Users can monitor their downloads with the LIST, INFO, and
STATUS commands and have total control with ADD, PAUSE, RESUME, and DEL.
The daemon is able to perform a user-defined amount of transfers
simultaneously.

[056] - OMake 0.9.6.9
  by Aleksey Nogin (http://freshmeat.net/users/nogin/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 14:16

Software Development :: Build Tools
System :: Shells

About: OMake is a build system with a similar style and syntax to GNU make
but with many additional features, including support for large projects
spanning multiple directories, default configuration files simplifying the
standard compilation tasks, support for commands that produce several
targets at once, fast, reliable, automated, scriptable dependency analysis
using MD5 digests, portability, and built-in functions that provide the
most common features of programs like grep, sed, and awk. It also
provides active filesystem monitoring that restarts builds automatically
when source files are modified. A companion command interpreter that can
be used interactively is included.

Changes: This release includes significantly improved C++ support, minor
improvements in OCaml support, a significantly updated default (sample)
OMakefile, significantly improved performance of the built-in find
command, several other bugfixes and improvements, and a number of
documentation fixes and improvements.

[057] - Open Metaheuristic 0.2.4
  by NoJhan (http://freshmeat.net/users/nojhan/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 08:03

About: Open Metaheuristic (oMetah) is a library aimed at the conception of
metaheuristics (e.g. genetic algorithms, tabu search, simulated annealing,
ant colony algorithms, etc.). It is focused on the conception, testing,
and comparison of metaheuristic algorithms. It uses several communication
interfaces (network, python) to link the optimization algorithms to
problems. It is designed so that you can easily add your own problem or
algorithm or interface. Moreover, it comes with a complete set of scripts
to test your algorithms and produce reports (LaTeX, HTML) with many
graphics (PNG, PS).

Changes: In oMetahLab, a latex report template, an all-in-one histogram
plot for end optimums, a simple GUI for tests and stats, and a gaussian
kernel estimation of the end optimums distribution in the solution space
were added. Also, the plugins were renamed. In oMetah, clean exception
management is used, problems written in Python can be called with the
communication client, a network protocol that uses unix sockets was added,
and a silent mode was added.

  by Michael Lang (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuddelaug/)
  Tue, Apr 11th 2006 14:21

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: SquidClamAV Redirector is a Squid helper script which adds virus
scanning for defined filename extensions. It has been tested with Python,
pyclamav, ClamAV, and Squid. Squid has to be configured to use
"redirect_program" and to either deny access to a URL defined in the SCAVR
configuration or to redirect to a remote Site which displays an error (and
some information). SCAVR handles the request as given from Squid,
downloads the URL, and scans it for known viruses. It rewrites the URL
from Squid to a blocked URL or an information page with information about
the scanning results.
