Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: A convenient presentation slide package was developed. The
misalignment of TeX and PostScript layers was fixed. The tension atleast
command and a clipping bug in unfill were fixed. Locale support and custom
page settings were added. A Ticks specifier draws ticks on both sides of
the path. Color names were systematized. Selected special functions from
the GNU scientific library, DESTDIR support, and a Python module to access
Asymptote commands were added. The legend skip is based on the actual
legend entry height. The add and attach commands take arguments in the
same order as label.

by Fabrizio Parrella (http://freshmeat.net/users/dnfnva/)

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Bug Tracking
About: bib_errors can be used to intercept runtime errors of PHP scripts.
It registers a PHP error handler function that outputs the details about
the errors to a given log file. The errors can be displayed as part of the
current script output or sent to a given email address to let the site
administration or developer react promptly.
Changes: From now on, the class will check if the error_reporting() is set
to report that kind of error. The _WEBMASTEREMAIL variable and the third
parameter from the function for the log function have been deleted.
$f_error_log is not required anymore, and the default values have been
changed to read the site configuration. Those changes will allow you to
just include the class in the project without having to change anything in
the file.

by Olivier Beyssac (http://freshmeat.net/users/obeyssac/)
Mon, Apr 24th 2006 10:17
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: BLD stands for "blacklist daemon" and is intended to serve a
blacklist. The blacklist is built by simply inserting IP addresses or by
using submission rate limits based on a maximum number of submissions of
the same IP address within a minimum time interval. A BLD cluster can be
built by configuring the daemon to notify other similar daemon(s) every
time an IP address is added to the blacklist. BLD was primarily designed
to fight against dictionary-based spam (by making the MTA report to BLD
any host that tries to send email to an unknown user), but can be used by
any program.
Changes: This release fixes bugs in the notification process and the
Postfix policy daemon. It also contains updates and fixes to the
documentation.

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux

as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: This version completes the move to separate all code (other than
inline functions) from the header files, making EasyBMP more compatible
with projects that contain several or many cpp files. Two functions have
been added to get the vertical and horizontal DPI values. This release
also includes bugfixes relating to potential memory leaks, uninitialized

About: Freenet is a peer-to-peer network designed to allow the
distribution of information over the Internet in an efficient manner,
without fear of censorship. It is completely decentralized (there is no
person or computer essential to its operation), meaning that Freenet
cannot be attacked like centralized peer-to-peer systems such as Napster.
Freenet also employs intelligent routing and caching to learn to route
requests more efficiently, automatically mirror popular data, make network
flooding almost impossible, and move data to where it is in greatest
demand.
Changes: This release operates over UDP rather than TCP. It can
transparently operate through firewalls. The core architecture and
algorithm have been redesigned for simplicity and efficiency. A new and
even simpler API allowing the rapid development of third party software
that interacts with Freenet has been added.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing
About: Jameleon is an automated testing framework that can be used by
technical and non-technical users alike. One of the main concepts behind
it is to create a group of keywords or tags that represent different
screens of an application. All of the logic required to automate each
particular screen can be defined in Java and mapped to these keywords. The
keywords can then be organized with different data sets to form test
scripts without requiring an in-depth knowledge of how the application
works. The test scripts are then used for both testing automation and test
case document generation.
Changes: Six features were added to the HttpUnit plug-in, the Jiffie
plug-in, and the Jameleon core. A bug in the HttpUnit plug-in that was
introduced in the previous release was fixed. Those using the HttpUnit
plug-in should download this release.

About: KBarcode is a barcode and label printing application for KDE 3. It
can be used to print everything from simple business cards up to complex
labels with several barcodes, such as article descriptions. KBarcode comes
with an easy-to-use WYSIWYG label designer, a setup wizard, batch import of
labels (directly from the delivery note), thousands of predefined labels,
database managment tools, and translations in many languages. Even
printing more than 10,000 labels in one go is no problem for KBarcode.
Additionally, it is a simple xbarcode replacement for the creation of
barcodes. All major types of barcodes like EAN, UPC, CODE39, and ISBN are
supported.
Changes: If you had problems printing articles from the SQL database, you
should upgrade to this release, which fixes some problems in this area. It
also includes some other minor bugfixes.

Software Development :: Libraries
About: libease is a shared library containing easing algorithms that can
be used for graphical effects or mathematical calculations. The main goal
of this project is to try and create a centralised library for easing
effects within the window manager environment.
Changes: The easing library now accepts and passes on variadic methods.
This lets you pass variables into the ease function and have these
variables passed onto the callback function. For each iteration of the
callback function, a copy is created of the va_list, and this copy is
passed into the callback function. All previous callback functions will
need to be rewritten to accept variable type va_list and then use va_arg
to extract the variables. An example is given in the ease.c test file.

About: Photovault is an image archiving and organization application for
photographers. It supports easy searching, annotation, and organization of
images.
Changes: The biggest change is support for external volumes. Previously,
Photovault could only manage images stored in its own database. This was
not a convenient way to work with large existing archives, since
Photovault created a new copy of each image file and thus doubled disk
usage. This can now be solved by defining the existing archive directory
as an external volume. Then Photovault stores only metadata and a
thumbnail of the photos in its database. The actual image files are
accessed from the original directory.

System :: Systems Administration
About: pyDirStat is a small tool to view statistical information about a

(and subdirectories) with rectangles. Each rectangular area is
proportional to the file sizes. It's useful for viewing disk usage with
graphics. It's a non-interactive command-line tool that will generate HTML
or SVG or SWF files. On Windows, it also runs as a shell extension.
Changes: This release uses a unique "pydirstat" script instead of a
gazillion small scripts using the new plugin architecture. This allows the
use of the old SVG and Ming backends under Windows. Therefore, Windows
users can now generate an HTML file, an SVG file, or a Ming (Flash) file

[050] - ReleaseForge 1.0

Mon, Apr 24th 2006 10:15
About: ReleaseForge is a GUI application designed for project
administrators and release engineers of projects that are hosted at
SourceForge. It is intended to make it easier and faster to create a new
release and edit existing releases rather than using the SourceForge Web
interface. It streamlines the release effort by prompting you for
information regarding your new release (version info, change log, release
notes, files to include, etc). It then seamlessly negotiates with the
SourceForge Web server, creating your release, posting your release
notes/change log, uploading your files to the SourceForge FTP server,
selecting the files for inclusion in your release on the SourceForge Web
server, updating the file attributes of each of the files and then, if
appropriate, notifying monitoring users of the new release.
Changes: Handling of some Sourceforge responses was optimized, which can
conserve substantial bandwidth when releasing a larger number of files. A
new preference was added for enabling or disabling Auto Login. A new
command line option, --noauto, was added to disable automatic login.

It presents most of the important metrics on a single VT100 80x24 screen.
It's a little bit like "top" or "prstat -a" and vmstat, but with
everything visible at a single glance.
Changes: Metrics indicating possible bottlenecks are now highlighted.
Support for Solaris 9 was added. sysstat was made aware of psradm. A minor
bug concerning refresh was fixed.

[062] - Systrace 1.6d
by Niels Provos (http://freshmeat.net/users/nielsprovos/)
Mon, Apr 24th 2006 01:01
Security
About: Systrace enforces system call policies for applications by
constraining the application's access to the system. The policy is
generated interactively. Operations not covered by the policy raise an
alarm, allowing the user to refine the currently configured policy. After
a policy has been sufficiently constructed, further alarms often indicate
security problems. Policies can also be generated automatically for
sandboxing purposes.
Changes: Translations were added for new system calls under OpenBSD,
NetBSD, and Linux. Zombies are correctly reaped when they get reparented
under ptrace by allowing waitpid to execute in more cases.

[064] - textbender 0.0.5
by Michael Allan (http://freshmeat.net/users/mcallan/)
Mon, Apr 24th 2006 13:22
Artistic Software
Communications
Text Processing
About: Textbender is a distributed system of collaborative writing, with a
basis in genetic theory. As a distributed system, it differs from the
typical centralized approach (e.g. of a Wiki) where writers push
contributions to a single, central copy of the text. By contrast,
textbender has no central copy; instead, each writer has a separate copy
of the text, and selectively pulls contributions from other writers. As a
consequence, there are multiple variations of the text. Collectively, the
text has spatial diversity.
Changes: The component hame.xquery has been introduced. It implements an
XQuery interface to the gene pool. Both sides of the pool (filebase and
database) are now automatically kept in sync.

About: The Kiwi Toolkit is a foundation class library containing many
useful classes that complement the Java Foundation Classes (JFC). It
includes many classes and components that were not provided with the JFC,
such as a TreeTable component, a DateChooser, an MVC charting package (bar
charts, line charts, pie charts), a plugin framework for Java, an
application resource manager (for loading images, icons, HTML pages, audio
clips, and other resources from JAR files), a better internationalization
API, and much more.
Changes: Minor code cleanup and documentation fixes.

[066] - Twindy 0.45
by NiallM (http://freshmeat.net/users/NiallMoody/)
Mon, Apr 24th 2006 05:11
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: Twindy is a window manager inspired by Tracktion, the multitrack
audio editor/sequencer for Windows and OS X. It tries to apply Tracktion's
workflow, in which everything is on the screen at once, to a window
manager. There are two panels, a main panel in which new windows/programs
open by default and may be selected using tabs, and a lower panel, which
can only hold one window/program at a time. It uses a modified version of
the JUCE library (included), resulting in relatively few dependencies and
a fairly unique appearance.
Changes: The code now works when compiled with GCC 4. Some minor feature
additions and a number of bugfixes were made, mostly related to the
preferences pages.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: Wt is a C++ library for developing Web applications with an API
that is widget-centric and inspired by existing C++ graphical user
interface APIs. To the developer, it offers complete abstraction of any
Web-specific implementation details. Under the hood, the library uses the
latest techniques (AJAX) to handle user events and update the Web page.
Changes: Two new validator classes (WDoubleValidator and WRegExpValidator)
were added. Some improvements were made in the WFileUpload API and
implementation. session management is more robust, and no longer uses evil
cookies. Several bugfixes were made.

[069] - xajax 0.2.4
by J. Max Wilson (http://freshmeat.net/users/jmaxwilson/)
Mon, Apr 24th 2006 11:09
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: xajax is a PHP class library that allows you to easily create
powerful, Web-based, Ajax applications or plugins using only HTML, CSS,
JavaScript, and PHP. Applications developed with xajax can asynchronously
call server-side PHP functions and update content without reloading the
page. xajax is object oriented, supports passing single and
multidimensional arrays and associative arrays, easy asynchronous form
processing, and supports a wide range of Unicode characters and languages
encoded with UTF-8.
Changes: New functionality to permit calling Javascript functions from PHP
and passing PHP variables, arrays, and object properties to the Javascript.
It's kind of like JSON, but employs a custom XML format, and is native to
xajax. This release also fixes various bugs and adds some other minor
feature enhancements.
