  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 21:52

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Aardvark Topsites PHP is the premier PHP/SQL topsites script.
Members' ranks can be shown on their button, and there are 6 different
ranking methods, including pageviews. Powerful anticheating protection is
included. It supports categories. You can use up/down/neutral arrows. The
admin allows you to approve new members, edit existing members, delete bad
members, and much more.

Changes: Version 5.1.0 used Unicode for all the translations. This caused
lots of problems for people, so the translations were converted back to
their old character encodings.

  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 10:16

Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
about 700 print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains over 300 profusely commented illustrative examples, and a number
of tables. Not just a shell scripting tutorial, this book also provides an
introduction to basic programming techniques, such as sorting and
recursion. It is well suited for either individual study or classroom use.
It covers Bash version 3+.

Changes: Significant reorganization of parts of the book. Cleanup of
markup tags. A cross-linked "commands" section. Some bugfixes and a fair
amount of new material, including a couple of new example scripts.

[005] - Ampache 3.3.2-Beta3 (Development)
  by Karl Vollmer (http://freshmeat.net/users/vollmerk/)
  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 01:21

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Ampache is a Web-based MP3/Ogg/RM/Flac/WMA/M4A manager. It allows
you to view, edit, and play your audio files via HTTP/IceCast/Mpd or
Moosic. It has support for downsampling, playlists, artist, and album
views, album art, random play, song play tracking, user themes, and remote
catalogs using XML-RPC.

Changes: This version includes a major re-write of the Localplay code. MPD
and other daemons are now controlled through a standardized Localplay
wrapper, which should make it considerably easier to add support for
additional applications. Ampache can now play music through XMBC.
Transcoding logic has been improved and a long standing bug with HTTPS and
Localplay has been resolved. The personal statistics page has been relinked
as well. Tag reading has also been rewritten and now allows the file
pattern to take priority over the tags in the files using the tag_order
option in the config file.

[007] - astGUIclient 1.1.12
  by eflonet (http://freshmeat.net/users/eflonet/)
  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 10:14

Communications :: Telephony

About: astGUIclient is part of a suite of programs that are designed to
interact with the Asterisk PBX Phone system at a client computer level to
extend the functionality of your phone and system. The main GUI
application, astGUIclient, is a set of PHP Web-based scripts utilizing
Javascript and XMLHTTPRequest functions that work through a browser to
give realtime information and functionality with nothing more than an
Internet browser on the client computer. Another component included with
the astGUIclient package is the VICIDIAL auto-dialer, a list dialer which
can dial one-call-at-a-time or be put in auto-dial mode to act as a
predictive dialer. It can function as an ACD for inbound calls or for
Closer calls coming from VICIDIAL fronters, and allows for remote agents
that may only have a phone.

Changes: This release adds security enhancements of PHP scripts to reduce
SQL-injection and other threats, a completely-redesigned local call time
system in VICIDIAL for more flexibility, drop-call and safe-harbor options
for campaigns and inbound groups, a rewritten multi-language translation
for more flexibility and easy of use, more user permission
options/restrictions for both agents and admins, the option of using
app_conference instead of the meetme engine, an internal DNC list for
Do-Not-Call entries across the system, automatic lead recycling to call
back, and busy calls at definable intervals.

[008] - Asymptote 1.09
  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)
  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 16:16

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: The workaround for the gv-3.6.1 option handling bug now supports
gv-3.5.8. Ghostscript version 8.54 is used by the MSWindows version to
produce PDF files. Resolution problems in the contour routines were
fixed; null contour labels are now suppressed. The help command again
uses the correct location of the manual. In the slides package, some
stepping bugs were fixed, an institution field was added to the title
page, and vbox support (e.g. for aligned equations) was added. A
colorless(pen) function that strips pen color attributes was added. A
clean copy of the source files is now shipped.

  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 14:34

About: barvinok is a library for counting the number of integer points in
parametric and non-parametric polytopes based on polylib. For a parametric
polytope, the number of points is represented by either a piecewise
quasi-polynomial or an Ehrhart series.

Changes: This release adds some documentation, a new polymake client, and
an application for computing the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a polytope.

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Bigloo is an implementation of the Scheme programming language. It
relies on an optimizing compiler from Scheme to C. Bigloo enables
connections between Scheme code and C code. It proposes many extensions to
Scheme such as a regular parser compiler, an lalr parser compiler, pattern
matching, an object layer, etc.

Changes: The highlights of this minor release are an important fix to the

[011] - Blossoc 1.0.2

  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 16:11

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Blossoc is a linkage disequilibrium association mapping tool that
attempts to build (perfect) genealogies for each site in the input, score
these according to non-random clustering of affected individuals, and
judge high-scoring areas as likely candidates for containing disease
affecting variation. Building the local genealogy trees is based on a
number of heuristics that are not guaranteed to build true trees, but have
the advantage over more sophisticated methods of being extremely fast.
Blossoc can therefore handle much larger data sets than more sophisticated
tools, but at the cost of sacrificing some accuracy.

Changes: This change adds calculations of single marker association scores
to the GUI. These scores are shown in a graph widget beneath the
clustering scores.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Exaile is a media player aiming to be similar to KDE's AmaroK, but
for GTK+. It incorporates many of the features from AmaroK (and other
media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large
libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via the wikipedia,
last.fm support, and optional iPod support (assuming you have python-gpod
installed). In addition, it includes a built in shoutcast directory
browser, tabbed playlists (so you can have more than one playlist open at
a time), blacklisting of tracks (so they don't get scanned into your
library), downloading of guitar tablature from fretplay.com, and
submitting played tracks on your iPod to last.fm.

Changes: iPod write support. Drag and drop support. WMA file support. The
track information update has been removed from the track timer (caused

[028] - getmail 4.6.3 (Stable)

  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 08:08

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: A regression was fixed in which spurious errors were thrown when
the required multidrop retriever parameter "envelope_recipient" was not
present in the getmailrc file. A regression was fixed in which
getmail_fetch no longer properly supported external MDAs because of
problems parsing the arguments to them. getmail's handling of regular
expressions in the "locals" parameter of MultiSorter destination was
change to allow it to handle backslashes correctly. Unfortunately, this
means complicating the configuration syntax slightly. Filters were updated
to use new configuration code. Obsolete code was removed.

[030] - GNU Common C++ 1.4.2
  by David Sugar (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidsugar/)
  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 08:41

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Common C++ is a highly portable C++ class library meant primarily
for the development of portable threaded applications. Support is provided
both for POSIX platforms and native builds under Win32. The goal is to
provide a truly common C++ framework for writing portable threaded
applications that do not require a huge amount of runtime overhead to
support, and hence can make C++ and threads suitable even for the
development of trivial servers and applications.

Changes: A possible race condition in detached threads was fixed.
URLStream handles relocated pages a little more cleanly. MSG_NOSIGNAL is
used in socket send operations to assure that SIGPIPE is never received,
which can break threaded applications on some platforms.

Information Management

About: Gourmet Recipe Manager is a simple but powerful recipe managing
application that is intended for the GNOME desktop environment, but
should work on any platform that Gtk supports. It allows you to collect,
search, and organize your recipes, and to automatically generate shopping
lists from your collection. It aims to make it easy to enter and
organize your recipes with an intuitive interface.

Changes: This version continues to stabilize the development branch. This
version fixes some Unicode-related bugs in the code that updates old
versions of gourmet to the new database. This version also fixes some i18n
related problems, allows the user to turn off fractions (and does so by
default for locales where fractions are not commonly used in recipes), and
makes the screen layout more small-screen friendly.

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the  Internet.

Changes: The new NX Builder now comes with the client, for running
sessions via the Web without need for any configuration by the end-user.
Relevant improvements to the client include better integration on all

[054] - Plan 9 20060622
  by ems (http://freshmeat.net/users/ems9/)
  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 01:29

System :: Operating System

About: Plan 9 was born in the same lab where Unix began. Underneath,
though, lies a new kind of system, organized around communication and
naming rather than files and processes. In Plan 9, distributed computing
is a central premise, not an evolutionary add-on. The system relies on a
uniform protocol to refer to and communicate with objects, whether they be
data or processes, and whether or not they live on the same machine or even
similar machines. A single paradigm (writing to named places) unifies all
kinds of control and interprocess signaling.

Changes: Major bugfixes and some new features.

System :: Monitoring

About: pscpug will graph the CPU percent usage of a given process. Since
you can see changes in usage over time, it is often more useful than other
utilities, such as top, for checking on a specific errant process.

Changes: pscpug now drops setuid/setgid privileges when they are
unnecessary.

bridge. It acts as an HTTP gateway server for any JMS messaging provider,
and provides a RESTful equivalent for most of the non-optional portions of
the JMS API. It is distributed with a few demo scripts that show it being
used with WebSphere MQ, Swift MQ, Active MQ, and JBoss Messaging.

Changes: This release transmits all types of JMS messages, allows the
configuration of any JNDI-based JMS provider, and allows management of JMS
connections, sessions, consumers, producers, browsers, and durable
subscribers.

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.

Changes: A new example program (castle) was added. Castle was inspired by
the castle adventure from 1984. The graphics driver for Windows has been
improved for circle, arc, chord, pieslice, and fellipse.

[063] - sudoku-perl 1.00
  by jdb1 (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdb1/)
  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 16:08

Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games

About: sudoku-perl is a Sudoku player that offers a board, assistance, and
solving using a (text based) ANSI screen. It offers a simple alphanumeric
board display that supports the 9x9 matrix. It does not generate a Sudoku
puzzle; for this, the user must look on the Internet, newspapers, Sudoku
booklets, etc. and take over the sudoku initial setting from there.
However, it assists the user in solving the Sudoku by providing some
functions, up to and including solving the Sudoku from the current board
setting. It can find all solutions up to 10.

Changes: Updated release, minor changes, and one enhancement: if the
option -d is set, the program, when solving the sudoku, does not stop at
the first solution found, but tries to find other solutions up to a
maximum of 10. Solving the sudoku is invoked by entering Ctrl-x. Thus,
the program can be used to test a given sudoku for having one solution or
more. A log file is used to store found solutions.

  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 03:35

Artistic Software
Communications
Text Processing

About: Textbender is a distributed system of collaborative writing, with a
basis in genetic theory. As a distributed system, it differs from the
typical centralized approach (e.g. of a Wiki) where writers push
contributions to a single, central copy of the text. By contrast,
textbender has no central copy; instead, each writer has a separate copy
of the text, and selectively pulls contributions from other writers. As a
consequence, there are multiple variations of the text. Collectively, the
text has spatial diversity.

Changes: Support for authorship claims was added. A claim generation tool
(staker) was introduced to the Recombinant Desktop toolkit.

  Thu, Jun 22nd 2006 08:53

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet

About: Transmission is a lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a
simple, intuitive interface on top on an efficient, cross-platform
back-end. Transmission runs on Mac OS X with a Cocoa interface,
Linux/NetBSD/FreeBSD/OpenBSD with a GTK+ interface, and BeOS with a native
interface.

Changes: This version lets you limit the download rate. It automatically
bans peers who send bad data. It can keep a copy of the torrent file, so
the original can be deleted. Also, many bugs have been fixed since 0.5. On
Mac OS X, the look of the interface has been reworked. The rate limits can
be changed directly from the main window. It can automatically stop
seeding when a given ratio is reached. Transmission can automatically
update itself with Sparkle. In the GTK+ interface, the handling of long
filenames has been improved. You can also open torrents from the command
line.

About: The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly scalable, secure
two-factor authentication system consisting of a server, a token client,
and network clients that connect a service such as a VPN or Web page to
the WiKID server to validate one-time passcodes. The user enters their PIN
into the token client, where it is encrypted and sent to the server. If the
PIN is correct, the encryption valid, and account active, the one-time
passcode is generated, encrypted, and returned to the user. It is simple
to implement and maintain, allows users to be validated automatically,
requires no hardware tokens, has a simple API for application support via
a COM object and Java component, supports multiple domains, and supports
replication for fault tolerance and scalability.
