  by unDEFER (http://freshmeat.net/users/undefer/)
  Tue, Jun 20th 2006 23:20

System :: Filesystems
System :: Recovery Tools

About: anyfs-tools allows you to recover and convert filesystems while
using minimal extra disk space. Unlike other recovery tools, anyfs-tools
doesn't copy all the files found on other disks (or partitions), but only
saves information about the location of the file blocks to an external
inode table. After recovery, a user may mount the damaged filesystem with
anyfs and the external inode table and then interact with all recovered
files with any program.

Changes: Bugs in the Bzip2 and Zip rescuers were fixed. In build_it,
realloc is now used for gradually allocating memory for inode_table. A bug
in write_it() which caused it to always return 0 was fixed.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: BFilter is a smart filtering HTTP proxy. Its primary purpose is
removing banner ads. Unlike the majority of similar tools, it doesn't rely
on a list of blocked URLs, but instead parses HTML on the fly, and detects
ads using a set of heuristic rules. BFilter has a built-in Javascript
engine that detects js-generated ads.

Changes: Two crash bugs were fixed. <img onclick=...> ads are now handled.
Ad-detection heuristics were improved. It's now possible to build BFilter
with external boost and SpiderMonkey libraries.

[010] - Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse 1.3.37
  by Vernon Schryver (http://freshmeat.net/users/vjs/)
  Tue, Jun 20th 2006 11:18

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse (DCC) is a system of clients and
servers that collect and count checksums related to mail messages. The
counts can be used by SMTP servers and mail user agents to detect and
reject bulk mail. DCC servers can exchange common checksums. The checksums
include values that are "fuzzy", or constant across common variations in
bulk messages.

Changes: Optionally in dccm, and by default in dccifd in proxy mode, this
release will temporarily reject SMTP recipients that might be forced to
have spam discarded instead of rejected because it must be delivered to
other recipients. /var/dcc/libexec/updatedcc should automagically fetch,
build, and install this version, unless you have installed a version of
Linux with the broken default `sort` collating sequence since last
upgrading. If so, an easy way to get the old updatedcc script working is
to delete the entire /var/dcc/build/dcc directory before running
updatedcc.

[014] - Gecode 1.2.0
  by Guido Tack (http://freshmeat.net/users/odiug/)
  Tue, Jun 20th 2006 00:05

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Gecode is a portable, accessible, and efficient environment for
developing constraint-based systems and applications. Gecode is radically
open for programming, meaning that it can be easily interfaced to other
systems. It supports the programming of new propagators (as implementation
of constraints), branching strategies, and search engines. New variable
domains can be programmed at the same level of efficiency as finite domain
and integer set variables that come predefined with Gecode.

Changes: This release makes quite some drastic changes to how propagators
and branchings are deleted: instead of using destructors they use a
dispose that allows a home space to be passed during deletion. This
infrastructure measure will eventually be used to speed up cloning
considerably. The directory structure was changed so that all include
files are to be found in a gecode subdirectory. There were also some small
fixes and extensions.

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: maildirproc is a program that processes one or several existing
mail boxes in the maildir format. It is primarily focused on mail sorting,
which means moving, copying, forwarding, and deleting mail according to a
set of rules. It can be seen as an alternative to procmail, but instead of
being a delivery agent (which wants to be part of the delivery chain),
maildirproc only processes mail which has already been delivered.

Changes: This release fixes a minor race condition. It has improved
documentation.

Security

About: MIMEDefang is a flexible MIME email scanner designed to do all
kinds of email processing, including anti-virus scanning, anti-spam
scanning, replacing parts of messages with URLs, adding boilerplate
disclaimers, and so on. It can alter or delete various parts of a MIME
message according to a Perl-based policy filter. It can also bounce
messages with unacceptable attachments and modify SMTP response codes on
the fly. It works with the Sendmail 8.11 and newer "Milter" API, which
makes it more flexible and efficient than procmail-based approaches.

Changes: The multiplexor has a new scheduling algorithm that tries to
reuse the same set of slaves for a given command. A new "md-mx-ctrl hload"
command shows the load over the last 1, 4, 12, and 24 hours, providing a
complement to the shorter-timeframe "md-mx-ctrl load" command. Several
minor bugs were fixed.

[041] - Sendmail filter for SpamAssassin 1.2.1
  by Eugene Kurmanin (http://freshmeat.net/users/smfs/)
  Tue, Jun 20th 2006 11:22

Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: smf-spamd is a Sendmail filter for SpamAssassin. It aims to be
lightweight, reliable, and simple rather than have a myriad of options. It
only scans the messages less than defined size, has a hosts/networks
whitelist, performs subject tagging if SPAM is detected, adds an
information header, copies SPAM messages to the defined "garbage" mailbox,
rejects SPAM messages at the SMTP DATA stage, and logs all filter
activities to syslog. The code is small (does not exceed 580 lines), fast,
stable, and few resources are required. No temporary files are created.

Changes: A workaround for the Sendmail socket unsafe error on some
platforms was implemented. Configuration file, default user, and working
directory were changed. The format of log records was changed. Some
samples of start-up scripts were added. The new TODO tasks were added.
Cosmetic enhancements were made.

About: xen-tools is a collection of scripts that allow you to manipulate
virtual images for the Xen virtualization software. With the tools
installed, you may create new instances of Debian, complete with
networking, OpenSSH, and user accounts, with one simple command. Images
may also be easily updated, listed, or deleted.

Changes: This release is built from a modularised codebase, which includes
many more unit tests, improving reliability and confidence. There are now
several additional installation methods for use in installing guest
domains. In addition to the rpmstrap and debootstrap methods it is
possible to untar, or copy a previous installation into a new image.
Support for Ubuntu's Dapper release was added.
