Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share
Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
Software Development :: Object Brokering
About: BerkeleyDB Backend Storage Engine for DURUS provides a storage
engine for DURUS, a persistence system for the Python programming
language.
Changes: "get_size()" is now instantaneous. When creating a database, you
can choose between "hash" and "btree". Documentation updates. Under some
circumstances, some garbage could leak and sit there forever. This release
makes sure that garbage collection does progress even if the process is
heavily restarted.

[003] - Bitgate Server Software Environment 0.2.1
by Ken Hollis (http://freshmeat.net/users/Tsuichi1/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 02:23
Internet
About: Bitgate Server Software Environment aims to build a multi-protocol
environment in which server protocol handlers can be eventually loaded and
unloaded on the fly using a center console or controller Web page. It aims
to have 99.9% uptime, and have high-availability (Java 6) compliance. It
is written in Java 5, and relies completely on Java's I/O functionality to
provide non-blocking support for both SSL and non-SSL sockets
(transparently). All configuration is done via XML files, as this is
easier to maintain. It includes a minimal demonstration HTTP server.
Changes: Updates were made to ByteString and XML settings in the
services.xml file. ByteUtilities was removed, and the beginnings of code
for handling clustering technology with an internal way to pass
instantiable objects between servers in XML format was added. A simple
protocol handler was added for an example service.

About: BSPonMPI is a platform-independent communication library for
developing parallel (SPMD) programs. It implements the BSPlib standard and
runs on all machines which have MPI.
Changes: The main data structure has been rewritten, which resulted in a
big performance increase. Now it is ready for the real world, as it offers
BSP communication at almost the same speed as the Oxford BSP Toolset.

Security
About: Charon aims to make it easy to start reselling Internet access via
WiFi access point. It installs onto a Linksys WiFi access point (or
similar Linux device) and manages automatic price and access negotiation
with local wireless customers, charging them via the mikolaj.cx
settlement/micropayment system. It will ultimately provide secure and
fraud-resistant access by utilizing cash-based settlement, reputation
tracking, and PKI-based non-repudiable contracts, to protect both the
end-user and the access provider.
Changes: Charon now supports a completely Web-based interface for both
administration and user logon (including credit card transfers, crypto/XML
contracts, and mikolaj.cx account creation). This requires Firefox or a
similarly capable non-IE browser, but support is included for a local
uncharged download site. Pre-built firmware images for direct installation
onto OpenWRT-compatible routers are also provided, allowing for
establishment of a functional ISP in minutes.

[008] - DKMS 2.0.13
by Matt Domsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/mdomsch/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 10:15
System :: Systems Administration
About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since
a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a
blocking mechanism for distributing code.
Changes: Version comparison for all 2.6 kernels has been fixed.
README.dkms has been added to %doc.

System :: Networking
Utilities
About: e-U Connect is a WPA Supplicant text mode user interface based on
bash+dialog for connecting to the e-U network (www.e-u.pt) under Linux.
Changes: Some tweaks and code cleanups were done. Support for dhclient and
pump was added. iwlist is now used. New functions were added: net_scan(),
which detects e-U networks before establishing a connection, and finish(),
which deletes temporary files and exits. Two annoying error messages that
showed up sometimes in stat_refresh() were fixed. The authentication
timeout process for connect() is now shown by a progress bar. Before
taking any actions, load_supp() waits five seconds to let the supplicant
finish up first. New dynamic message types were added to echo_log(): 0=OK,
1=INFO, and 2=ERROR.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
About: K-Yamo is an MP3 and Ogg Vorbis tagger with ID3v2 support. It can
store ID3v1, ID3v2.3, or ID3v2.4 tags. It also stores pictures in the
tags. K-Yamo supports multi-file editing. It can guess tags out of
filenames, and fetches the missing parts from musicbrainz. It also cleans
up your files into a structured filesystem tree which makes use of the
tags in the files. Finally, it is a CD ripper with FreeDB support. A MySQL
database can optionally be used for tagging.
Changes: This release features new version numbers to make updating
possible and support for the MusicBrainz XML service. The database is now
modular and will be exchangable in the future. Tagguesser now replaces all
underscores with spaces and keeps old tags if their value is empty. Length
was included in mediafile-wrapper so that the MusicBrainz interface can
check track lengths. Dialogs were prettied up. Ripper now shows the
correct track length again. A settings dialog with sub-menus and more
options was provided along with more encoder engines.

[037] - Plan 9 From User Space 20060628
by ems (http://freshmeat.net/users/ems9/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 03:15
Software Development
About: Plan 9 From User Space is a port of the bulk of the Plan 9 software
build environment to Unix. While the libraries make an attempt to play nice
with the rest of the system (by using the Unix rules for printf verbs and
Unix system headers, for example), this port tries to reproduce the Plan 9
build environment as faithfully as possible, providing u.h and libc.h, and
blithely redefining tokens such as open, dup, and accept in order to
provide implementations that better mimic the Plan 9 semantics. The result
is a more complicated and less Unix-friendly environment, but Plan 9
programs can typically be compiled with little or no changes.
Changes: Major bugfixes and feature enhancements were made. A major
redesign of the graphics code was undertaken in a new application called
devdraw.

data types and easy extensibility of Postgres, it replaces the PostQuel
query language with an extended subset of SQL.
Changes: The server has been changed to reject invalidly-encoded
multi-byte characters in all cases. This release rejects unsafe uses of \'
in string literals. libpq's string-escaping routines have been modified to
be aware of encoding considerations and standard_conforming_strings.

[039] - Prometheus QoS 0.6
by Michael Polak (http://freshmeat.net/users/xchaos/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 10:42
System :: Networking
About: Prometheus QoS (Quality of Service) is an ISP-oriented tool for
easy manipulation of the IP traffic shaping and sharing features of the
Linux kernel. It generates multiple nested HTB traffic control classes
with fine-grained rate and ceiling values and implements optional daily
(or simply periodical) data transfer quotas and data transfer statistics
(as HTML). It is compatible with NAT (both asymmetric and symmetric), yet
still provides good two-way shaping and prioritizing for both uploads and
downloads.
Changes: The most important feature enhancement is improved performance
(packets-per-second throughput) in heavy-duty configurations, where
Prometheus QoS is used to allocate the capacity of a shared Internet
uplink among thousands of individualy configured IP addresses in a local
network. Networks with a small number of individually configured hosts
won't see any difference.

[040] - pure::variants 2.2.1 (Community Edition)
by pure-systems (http://freshmeat.net/users/puresystems/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 06:28
Software Development
About: The pure::variants Eclipse plugin supports development and variant
management for software product lines with many product variants.
pure::variants is completely model-based. It uses feature models for
variability and commonality modeling. It supports creation, management,
and evaluation of all necessary models, and uses XML based data formats.
It includes a model transformer, which permits the creation of product
variants directly from customizable components.
Changes: This release provides support for expressing modeling constraints
and a new, simplified language for restrictions and constraints, including
graphical and textual editors with syntax highlighting and automatic
completion. Extended consistency checks for models, including support for
user-defined checks, help users to create and maintain high quality
models. For instance, type model violations can be checked online during
model manipulation. Domain specific rules can be integrated easily. The
improved model evaluation provides better conflict resolution and user
interaction.

by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 03:17
System :: Boot :: Init
About: runit is a cross-platform Unix init scheme with service
supervision; a replacement for sysvinit and other init schemes. It runs on
GNU/Linux, *BSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris, and can easily be adapted to other
Unix operating systems. runit implements a simple three-stage concept.
Stage 1 performs the system's one-time initialization tasks. Stage 2
starts the system's uptime services (via the runsvdir program). Stage 3
handles the tasks necessary to shutdown and halt or reboot.
Changes: svlogd was changed to also prepend the optional timestamp to log
messages sent to the network through via UDP, just as it does for log
messages written to a log directory or standard error. A bug where svlogd
did not clean up incompletely processed log files after rotation under

Thu, Jun 29th 2006 10:15

About: sshutout is a daemon that periodically monitors log files, looking
for multiple failed login attempts via the Secure Shell daemon. The daemon
is meant to mitigate what are commonly known as "dictionary attacks," i.e.
scripted brute force attacks that use lists of user IDs and passwords to
effect unauthorized intrusions. The sshutout daemon blunts such attacks by
creating firewall rules to block individual offenders from accessing the
system. These rules are created when an attack signature is detected, and
after a configurable expiry interval has elapsed, the rules are deleted.
Changes: This release adds the -u command line option to enable blocking
of "Illegal user" login attempts. This option is also configurable via the

Security
About: TinyCA is a simple GUI written in Perl-Gtk to manage a small
certification authority. It works as a frontend to OpenSSL. TinyCA lets
you manage x509 certificates. It is possible to export data in PEM or DER
format for use with servers, as PKCS#12 for use with clients, or as S/MIME
certificates for use with email programs. It is also possible to import
your own PKCS#10 requests and generate certificates from them. It also
lets you create and manage SubCAs for more complex setups. The most
important certificate extensions can be configured with the graphical
frontend. English, German, Spanish, and Czech translations are included.
Changes: Invalid filename encoding with German umlauts in base64 has been
fixed. Corrupted display of UTF-8 characters in the GUI has been fixed.

[064] - TuxCards 2.0 (2.x)
by amitc (http://freshmeat.net/users/amitc/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 05:43
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
About: TuxCards provides a hierarical notebook similar to CueCards under
Windows. Every kind of note and idea may be managed and sorted within a
tree structure.
Changes: File encryption was implemented. This encrypts all the entries in
the file and requires a password on load. This feature is accessible
through the toolbar, the File menu, and a shortcut (Ctrl+E). The text
color for a single note or subtree of notes was changed. New entries get
the subtree color of the parent, if set. A statusbar item was added for
total number of notesitems. A dialog box was added under the About menu to
show current keyboard shortcuts. Multiple bugs were fixed.

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking
About: The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly scalable, secure
two-factor authentication system consisting of a server, a token client,
and network clients that connect a service such as a VPN or Web page to
the WiKID server to validate one-time passcodes. The user enters their PIN
into the token client, where it is encrypted and sent to the server. If the
PIN is correct, the encryption valid, and account active, the one-time
passcode is generated, encrypted, and returned to the user. It is simple
to implement and maintain, allows users to be validated automatically,
requires no hardware tokens, has a simple API for application support via
a COM object and Java component, supports multiple domains, and supports
replication for fault tolerance and scalability.
Changes: apacheds has been updated. Moving toward a stable release.

[068] - XINS 1.5.0-alpha2 (Development)
by Anthony Goubard (http://freshmeat.net/users/agoubard/)
Thu, Jun 29th 2006 10:23
Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.
Changes: This release adds the _hex type. The XINS front-end framework is
now part of the core library. A new demo name, "fileupload", has been
added. It's now possible to call an API using the network (in JVM call).
Some bugs were also fixed.

About: The zen Platform is a Java development environment for J2SE/J2EE.
It eases and accelerates the Java application development by visual
methods (RAD). Complete applications can be modelled in an intuitive
fashion without the need for technical expertise. The complexity of Java
and J2EE programming is tremendously hidden - reducing the learning
curve for Java novices. Java experts are by no means restricted - they
may apply their knowledge without limitations. Application flexibility is
a core feature of the platform, which is delivered as an Eclipse plugin.
