Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share
Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

by SlotGazer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slotgazer/)
Tue, Jul 4th 2006 06:25
Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent.
Changes: This release adds Metalink version 3.0 support. The current
implementation only supports HTTP/FTP downloading for Metalink.

[004] - BMP 0.20beta1 (Development)
by Milosz Derezynski (http://freshmeat.net/users/queuerunner/)
Tue, Jul 4th 2006 06:25
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: BMP is a media player that partially uses GTK+2 and partially uses
a skinned interface which supports Winamp 2.x compatible skins. It
combines efficiency with simplicity to enable users to perform tedious
tasks with ease. The primary goals of BMP are not lots of features, but
usability and effectiveness for handling music.
Changes: Stability has been greatly enhanced since the previously
announced version. The library interface has been improved, and library
functionality has been enhanced to make it even easier to manage music,
where individual tracks as well as albums remain first-class objects (in
contrast to e.g. XMMS where tracks are the first-class objects, or
RhythmBox where an album is a first-class object). This release is the
final testing release before 0.20.

read and write data on disk instead of in the classes' instance fields. It
is distributed (through RMI), transactional (with the 4 ANSI isolation
levels supported), garbage collected (backed by an on-disk heap called
"heapspace"), and has persistent versions of the Collection classes. It
aims to provide a full-fledged solution for enterprise application

[017] - gpgdir 0.9.8
by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
Tue, Jul 4th 2006 10:13
Security :: Cryptography
About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not
to encrypt hidden files and directories.
Changes: Updated to use GnuPG::Interface instead of GnuPG module. This
should fix the incompatibility issues seen between the GnuPG module and
some GnuPG installations. Perl module installation code from fwknop has
been added. This allows gpgdir to preferentially use any Perl modules that
are already installed on the system.

Software Development :: Libraries
About: Harminv is a free program and C library for harmonic inversion:
decomposing a time-series into a sum of sinusoids, including exponentially
decaying sinusoids. It is based on the "filter diagonalization method"
(FDM) of Mandelshtam & Taylor, which maps the harmonic inversion problem
onto a small eigen-problem (size proportional to the number of sinusoids).
The FDM is often able to obtain much more robust and accurate solutions
than alternative methods.

[022] - InspIRCd 1.0.5
by Brain (http://freshmeat.net/users/braindigitalis/)
Tue, Jul 4th 2006 10:22
Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
About: InspIRCd is a modular C++ IRC Daemon for Linux, BSD, and Windows
systems created to provide a stable, modern, lightweight ircd from
scratch, and provide a vast number of features in a modularised form using
an advanced module API. By keeping the functionality of the main core to a
minimum, stability, speed, and customizability should be increased. It is
designed primarily to be a custom IRC server for the chatspike IRC
network. It has been written from scratch to avoid instability under heavy
load.
Changes: Optional ACCOUNT support operates in an identical way to ircu,
asuka, and nefarious (and others of this ilk) by attaching a username to
each user when they log in. As usual, this is a module: you must choose
between m_services.so or m_services_account.so. At present, one services
package can use this account feature, Atheme. Advanced connection
throttling: m_connflood.so provides InspIRCd with an equivalent feature to
the UnrealIRCd ConnThrottle (which you have to pay for, if you use theirs).

Tue, Jul 4th 2006 10:29
Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Java Parallel Processing Framework is a set of tools and APIs to
facilitate the parallelization of CPU intensive applications, and
distribute their execution over a network of heterogenous nodes. It is
intended to run in clusters and grids. It features platform independence
thanks to Java 1.5, does not require you to deploy your application
classes to a server, scales up to thousands of nodes, has a built-in
fail-over mechanism on all the framework's components, and has a
monitoring and administration GUI tool to enable remote monitoring of the
server health and server shutdown/restart operations.
Changes: A bug was fixed where a node would go into an infinite loop if
its security policy file was missing. A new node data provider was added
to allow the nodes to access files of arbitrary size through an HTTP or
FTP URL. The preferences in the administration tool are now persisted.
Many enhancements were made in the UI builder.

About: NuFW is an authentication firewall suite: the gateway authorizes a
packet depending on which remote user has sent it. It can also set quality
of service on a per-user basis and log user activities into a SQL database.
Furthermore, it can use an external authentication source such as an LDAP

Software Development :: Compilers
About: phc is a compiler for PHP that will translate PHP code directly
into Linux assembly code. At the moment it does not yet generate code, but
can be used as a (C++) framework for developing refactoring tools, aspect
weavers, script obfuscators, and any other tools that operate on PHP
scripts.
Changes: This version introduces an improved tree transformation API,
featuring pattern matching, a more flexible interface for replacing and
deleting nodes, and the ability to define generic tree visitors. The PHP
and Dot unparsers have been rewritten as visitors so that they can easily
be extended. To accommodate developers who wish to process PHP using the
abstract representation in a programming language other than C++,
exporting and importing XML is supported. Compile time expansion of
"include" statements has been added, as well as numerous other minor

Communications
Communications :: Conferencing
Communications :: Internet Phone
About: Sfront compiles MPEG 4 Structured Audio (MP4-SA) bitstreams into
efficient C programs that generate audio when executed. MP4-SA is a
standard for normative algorithmic sound, that combines an audio signal
processing language (SAOL) with score languages (SASL, and the legacy MIDI
File Format). Under Linux and Mac OS X, sfront supports real-time,
low-latency audio input/output, local MIDI input from soundcards, and
networked MIDI input using RTP and SIP. A SIP server hosted on the
Berkeley campus manages sessions. The documentation includes a book about
SAOL programming.
Changes: Most core opcodes now use band-limited interpolation, with a
configurable interpolation function. 64-bit integer arithmetic is now used
for most phase pointers, to support high-quality playback of long samples.
24-bit and 8-bit WAV and AIFF files are now supported for audio input and
output and for wavetables. Wavetables now read stereo WAV and AIFF files.
The networking library conforms to the final version of the RTP MIDI
standard. Bugs related to oparrays and to the startup instrument have been
fixed. Sfront has been re-licensed to use the BSD license (without the
advertising clause).

About: Stunnix Perl-Obfus is a unique solution for protecting your
valuable intellectual property from possible Perl source code
piracy/studying/rework. It's an advanced and extremely reliable obfuscator
for the Perl source code. It converts the Perl source files (.pl and .pm)
