Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

  Wed, Jul 5th 2006 13:49

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: BFilter is a smart filtering HTTP proxy. Its primary purpose is
removing banner ads. Unlike the majority of similar tools, it doesn't rely
on a list of blocked URLs, but instead parses HTML on the fly, and detects
ads using a set of heuristic rules. BFilter has a built-in Javascript
engine that detects js-generated ads.

Changes: Forwarding to SOCKS proxies is now supported. HTTPS forwarding
(but not filtering) was implemented. A small bug that could prevent some
ads from being detected has been fixed.

[011] - Contact Conductance Estimator 0.5 beta
  by ido50 (http://freshmeat.net/users/ido50/)
  Wed, Jul 5th 2006 10:45

Scientific/Engineering

About: Contact Conductance Estimator (CoCoE) is a program that estimates
the conductance (or resistance) between two surfaces in contact. It is
meant to be used by designers and analysts of physical systems where heat
transfer by means of contact is of importance. CoCoE is written in Perl,
and uses a self-contained SQLite database and Tk for the user interface.

Changes: Many new entries in the database. Many fixes to existing entries
in the database (correlations are now much more accurate). The CoCoE
window now has a status bar that displays help messages. CoCoE will now
ask for contact pressure input method (Direct or via Load and Area)
instead of the older way. It is now possible to input as many contact
pressures as wanted, instead of having to start over every time you want
to try a new value.

Database
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: dao-zero is a tiny Java bean used to reduce the source of a
persistence tier based on Spring's iBatis support. The usual way to use
iBatis in Spring is to write code and invoke the iBatis API explicitly.
dao-zero invokes the iBatis API for the developer automatically, without
the need to write implementation code. It will implement DAO interfaces
automatically and invoke iBatis SQL mapped statements for you. You can use
it to replace your DAO bean class directly.

Changes: Dynamic statements which contain $value$ are supported. A bug
where a namespace with more than one level is not considered was fixed.
queryForList(String statement, Object param, int skip, int max) and
queryForPaginatedList() are supported. the java.util.List returned from
iBatis can be transformed to other types, such as []/Iterator/Set. The
documentation was updated. A simplified sample called "HelloWorld" was
added, and the documentation uses this sample to explain basic issues.
Chinese messages were added.

Desktop Environment :: Application Themes
Desktop Environment :: Gnome :: GTK 2.x Themes

About: Gtk-Qt Theme Engine is a GTK+ theme engine meant for GTK
applications running in KDE. It applies all Qt settings to the GTK
application and uses Qt style plugins directly.

Changes: The theme no longer tries to override widget-specific colours set
by applications or user RC files. This allows applications to change the
colours of buttons and other widgets. Widget background pixmaps are cached
instead of constantly regenerating them. This fixes a large memory leak and
improves app startup speeds and responsiveness. Tooltip text is always
black when using another text color. A workaround has been added for a bug
in OpenOffice where menus and toolbars were drawn incorrectly. There are
many other various bugfixes.

[026] - HTML Forms generation and validation 2006.07.04
  by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
  Wed, Jul 5th 2006 01:39

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: HTML Forms generation and validation is a PHP class that generates
HTML forms supporting many built-in validation types on server and client
sides. It prevents security attacks by discarding spoofed values, has
multiple submit protection, outputs HTML for fields displayed as fully
accessible or in read-only mode, and has field value filtering and
reformatting. It can be extended with custom input control plug-in
classes. AJAX based form submission, auto-complete text input, automatic
vertical layout renderer, Calendar date, CAPTCHA, Google Maps world
location selection, and linked select plug-in controls are available.

Changes: A new plug-in was made available to attach auto-complete behavior
to a text input. It can present a menu with suggested words to complete the
first few letters that the user types in a text input, in a similar way to
Google Suggest. The list of auto-complete words can be loaded all at once
within the Javascript generated by the plug-in, or loaded on demand from
the server using an AJAX request.

[029] - Jameleon 3.3-M1
  by Christian Hargraves (http://freshmeat.net/users/engrean/)
  Wed, Jul 5th 2006 08:34

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing

About: Jameleon is an automated testing framework that can be used by
technical and non-technical users alike. One of the main concepts behind
it is to create a group of keywords or tags that represent different
screens of an application. All of the logic required to automate each
particular screen can be defined in Java and mapped to these keywords. The
keywords can then be organized with different data sets to form test
scripts without requiring an in-depth knowledge of how the application
works. The test scripts are then used for both testing automation and test
case document generation.

Changes: This is a milestone (beta) release which includes a new HtmlUnit
plug-in and a refactor of the test case doc generator and the results.

System :: Networking :: LDAP
System :: Systems Administration

About: LDAP Account Manager makes it possible to manage various account
types (Unix, Samba, and Kolab) in an LDAP directory. It also features an
external script for managing quotas and home directories.

Changes: This release closes some security related bugs. There were two
problems in 1.0.2 with Unix passwords. The invalid password option did not
work, and users could log in with the password "*". This option has been
removed. The second issue is related to disabled passwords. When editing
users without changing to the Unix page, the password was silently

About: LogMiner is a powerful log analysis package for Apache/IIS (or
other Web servers using the "combined" or Extended W3C log formats). It
can produce detailed reports about visits, hits, traffic, navigation
paths, browsers and operating systems used by users, and so on.

Changes: The navigation graph has been improved. From the query reports,
you can see the navigation graph originated from a search. A filter on
response code has been added to the "View log" page. When parsing logs, if
they've already been passed through logresolve, the hostnames will be
resolved to IP addresses again. Support for the cs-version field has been
added to the Extended W3C parser.

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the  Internet.

Changes: The latest available NX client packages are provided and can be
integrated into any Web site together with the NX Builder. By customizing
the builder, it is possible to generate the per-user basis session files
needed by the Web Companion, providing end-users with the possibility to
run sessions via the Web without the need for any configuration on the
client.

the GTKmm toolkit. It enables one to query search engines and display as
well as analyze and locally index the returned results. Supported sources
are search plugins, the Google SOAP API and Xapian indexes. Supported
document types include plain text, HTML, PDF, RTF, MS Word, XML,
OpenDocument/StarOffice, mbox, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. Its goals are to make
Web search engines easily available to end users and to harness Xapian to
index the user's personal documents. Pinot is moving towards what Beagle
and Kat do, while still retaining a focus on metasearch.

Changes: Pinot now supports user-configurable cache services. The new
"More Like This" feature extracts representative terms from the selected
documents. The language of several documents may be changed at once.
Results are viewed on double click. Most tree columns can be sorted. One
can search for documents with language "Unknown". History items older than
one month are removed at startup. pdftotext is now used, which seems to
support more files than pdftohtml. A bug that causes a segfault when
creating a query that indexes and labels results based on a language
filter was worked around.

About: SISC is an extensible Java-based interpreter of the algorithmic
language Scheme. It uses modern interpretation techniques and handily
outperforms all existing Java interpreters (often by more than an order of
magnitude). In addition, SISC is a complete implementation of the language.
The entire R5RS Scheme standard is supported. This includes a full number
tower including complex number support and arbitrary precision integers
and floating point numbers, proper tail recursion, hygienic macros, and
full support for first-class continuations (not just the escaping
continuations found in many other systems).

Changes: Support for tail-recursion compatible stack traces. This release
improves most debugging messages and reduces unnecessary information. It
adds functions to inspect and modify breakpoint arguments, and to obtain
breakpoint continuations. Support for SSL and TLS sockets. Support for

  Wed, Jul 5th 2006 23:51

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: Traverso is a lightweight multitrack audio recording and editing
tool. Traverso uses a contextual interaction user interface. Instead of
using only the mouse to operate on certain objects, the mouse and keyboard
are used together to control the program. The mouse only has to move on an
object and all functions become available by pressing a key on the
keyboard. This is more efficient and requires less interaction than
selecting the object and choosing the function from a menu.

Changes: Highlights of this initial release are a rewritten audio engine,
core/GUI separation, a lockless (soft) real time audio rendering thread, a
