Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

  by John Bowman (http://freshmeat.net/users/jcbowman/)

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering

About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: The graph tick labelling commands were fixed. A workaround was
implemented for the broken libsigsegv-2.3 library that caused a premature
exit(1). 3D array transpose and copy functions were added. The example
embeddedmovie.asy, showing how to embed movies within PDF files, was
added. A "twice" setting was added to resolve LaTeX references. The
settings module is now globally accessible. Debugger breakpoints can now
be set using a matching substring instead of a line number. Conditional
breakpoints are now supported. Runtime errors and interrupts no longer
reset the interactive environment.

[004] - bit 0.2.2
  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Thu, Jul 6th 2006 16:17

Software Development :: Libraries

About: bit is a library that makes it easier to dynamically manipulate
data buffers containing fields that do not have octet (byte) boundaries.
An example is the IP header, which is generally dealt with at compile time
via bit fields in a structure. A key feature of the bit library is support
for loading data formats described in XML files and dynamically parsing
those fields at run time. This library was initially created to support
reading various kinds of robotic device I/O (IR sensors, motors), but it
has also been used for run time parsing of IP, TCP, UDP, and RTP headers.

Changes: A potential type-punning issue when changing endianness for
doubles and floats has been fixed. The documentation distribution has been
cleaned up a bit.

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The bitgtkmm library contains a set of gtkmm widgets supporting
data structures in the bit library. These widgets include BufferTable and
 BufferList, which will automatically lay out a data structure visually.

Changes: The only change to the code in this release is a move from the
bitgtk namespace to bitGtk. The remainder of the changes include cleanup
of the distributed documentation. Additionally, since the bit library is
now stable enough to start using proper libtool versioning, the bitgtkmm
library has started using it as well.

  by harteg (http://freshmeat.net/users/harteg/)
  Thu, Jul 6th 2006 16:24

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: CMSimple is a simple content management system for simple
maintainance of small commercial or private sites. It has a simple
installation, is easy to modify, and offers an unique combination of
features. It uses an HTML-file for storing the entire site, which can be
edited in your favorite editor. It has a dynamic TOC and document locator,
a WYSIWYG editor (no plugin--functions in IE and Mozilla), a search
function, link validation, image handling, and automatic backup. It is
easy to set up your own layout; just edit the template and stylesheet.

Changes: Incorrect 401/404 headers on Linux have been fixed. A "Page not
found" error has been fixed. Readable URLs for other charsets: login, adm,
search, mailform, and guestbook split into individual files making it
easier to modify or run CMSimple without these parts. The built-in editor
OEdit has been placed in an external file, and the code has been cleaned
up. CMSimple scripting has been made non-greedy, and it is possible to
configure CMSimple scripting with config variables. There are several
minor fixes, and a Spanish language translation is now included.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: GNU polyxmass features an integrated mass spectrometry framework
where users are able to define brand new polymer chemistries (within the
polyxdef module), and use these definitions in order to make simple mass
calculations (within the polyxcalc module) or perform complex simulations
of polymer chemistry with related mass data computations (within the
polyxedit module). The framework allows full customization of every aspect
of the polymer chemistry being defined, and of the way the polymer
sequences are graphically displayed. This program was formerly called
"polyXmass".

Changes: The dependency on libpolyxmass was removed, since its code was
integrated in polyxmass-bin. A function to insert a sequence from a raw
text file was added, with automatic detection of non-code characters and
the ability to correct the errors. This code compiles correctly under
MS-Windows, but the binary still has problems on some machines.

[023] - Mr. Persister 3.2.2
  by Jakob Jenkov (http://freshmeat.net/users/jjenkov/)
  Thu, Jul 6th 2006 05:11

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: Mr. Persister is a POJO persistence API for Java. The main focus of
Mr. Persister is to handle all the trivial JDBC work, and leave the
non-trivial parts up to you. It uses plain SQL as the query language, it
can auto-map objects to the database, and it can generate SQL for a lot of
trivial tasks by itself (such as insert, update, and delete). Mr. Persister
also has support for easy batch updates of collections of objects,
connection and transaction handling, and many other features.

Changes: This version contains connection and transaction scoping.

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 18, which contains 7,146 foods and
136 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release incorporates minor bugfixes and changes to defaults.

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Octod is a "download manager daemon", i.e. a daemon that listens at
the network interface for incoming download jobs and performs them
(simultaneously) in the background. It is intended to run on desktop
systems as a reliable and fast download manager without the overhead of a
graphical user interface, but it can also be used as a centralized
download station running in network environments with multiple users. To
control the daemon, an easy and self-explanatory network protocol has been
defined, so cross-platform, cross-language graphical clients (based on
ncurses, Qt, Gtk, or even HTML/PHP) can be implemented.

Changes: This release adds command line configuration support using
startup parameters and more verbose (but optional) debugging information.
Due to internal changes, the code is much more readable and easier to
understand. Additionally, efficiency problems have been faced, so critical
regions are faster now. Finally, many bugs have been fixed and security
flaws wiped out.

money. You are required to feed your people and army, and to pay to
maintain your planets and army. If you fail to do these things, disastrous
results may occur. You are given several turns of protection, during which
you cannot attack or be attacked, and cannot perform covert operations.
This provides a way for smaller empires to build up their defenses and
planets before they enter the real world.

a set of generic RTOS services. Any number of RTOS personalities called
"skins" can then be built over the nucleus, providing their own specific
interface to the applications by using the services of a single generic
core to implement it.

About: XMMS2 is a redesign of the XMMS music player. It features a
client-server model, allowing multiple (even simultaneous!) user
interfaces, both textual and graphical. All common audio formats are
supported using plugins. On top of this, there is a flexible media library
to organize your music.

Changes: This release introduces a new Plugin API that will remove a lot
of problems with the old model. Expect some problems with the first
release of Xforms.
