Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share
Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

Sun, Jul 9th 2006 04:46
Multimedia
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: AQuoSA is an open architecture for the provisioning of Quality of
Service related functionality into the Linux kernel. The project features
a flexible, portable, and lightweight software architecture for supporting
QoS-related services on top of a general-purpose operating system as Linux.
The architecture is well founded on formal scheduling analysis and control
theoretical results. At the core of the software is an adaptive Resource
Reservation layer that is capable of dynamically adapting the CPU
allocation for QoS-aware applications based on its run-time requirements.
Changes: The architecture now supports kernel 2.6.x series. Source
configuration is now performed through "standard" autoconf scripts. Debian
binary packages have been released for the patched kernel and various
AQuoSA components.

Scientific/Engineering
About: DB Visual Architect (DBVA) is a powerful tool that provides
support for Object Relational Mapping (ORM) and Entity Relationship
Diagrams (ERD), which assist with realizing UML designs as relational
database implementations. By drawing a class diagram for the system, you
can generate the required database tables and persistent source code for
database manipulation. It can also be used with existing software.
Changes: A stored procedure is a program which is physically stored within
a database. After reversing the database, the generated code from the ORM
engine can call strored procedure in the database. All the databases
supported by DB-VA now support stored procedures. The Foreign Key Name
Mapping feature can help you update the foreign key column name according
to Foreign Key Pattern, including Relationship name and referenced table
information in the ER Diagram. You can define the constraint name for
primary key, unique constraint, and check constraint. A user can specify
the default value for each column.

[046] - OpenDBX 1.1.2
by Norbert Sendetzky (http://freshmeat.net/users/nsendetzky/)
Sun, Jul 9th 2006 14:28
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries
About: OpenDBX is an extremely lightweight but extensible C library for
accessing databases with a single API. It provides a clean and simple
interface across all supported databases that leads to an elegant code
design automatically. Currently, Firebird/Interbase, MySQL, PostgreSQL,
SQLite, and SQL Server (MS and Sybase) are supported, and backends for
more native database APIs can be written easily.
Changes: This release contains a fully featured and stable backend for
Firebird database servers that works well with both, the classic server
and the newer Firebird threaded server. Using the Firebird client library
correctly is one of the more challenging tasks, and therefore great news
for the this project. This version also introduces a new function called
odbx_error_type(), whose primary goal is to distinguish fatal from
non-fatal errors. This is especially important for client programs to be
able to recover from errors instead of just fail.

[052] - powernap 30
by khirbee (http://freshmeat.net/users/khirbee/)
Sun, Jul 9th 2006 21:17
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Powernap is a small Python extension for accurate sleeping.
Python's time.sleep() function is fairly inaccurate. It is definitely not
accurate enough for music, games, or graphics. It can sleep too long or
too short, and usually does. Using Linux's real-time clock (RTC) allows
for more accurate timing. This extension wraps all the messy RTC stuff and
provides nap(), which performs the same job as sleep(), but more
accurately. Even more usefully, it provides rnap(), which is a padding
nap. That is, if you call rnap(30), it will nap for however many
milliseconds are required to make the time since the last nap 30
milliseconds. rtc_on() sets up the real-time clock, and rtc_off() turns it
off. It also switches the scheduler to SCHED_FIFO.
Changes: This is the second public release. Most of the timing was moved
into the C extension. rnap(), the rolling padding nap, is provided.

[068] - sudoku-perl 1.41
by jdb1 (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdb1/)
Sun, Jul 9th 2006 18:34
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games
About: sudoku.pl that offers a simple alphanumeric board display that
supports the 9x9 matrix. It can generate a sudoku puzzle, but manual input
by the user is also possible to use a sudoku from a newspaper, the Internet
etc. It assists the user in solving the sudoku by providing some functions,
up to and including solving the sudoku from the current board-setting. If
the option -d is set, all solutions are found and logged, up to a maximum
of 10. This option enables the program to test a given sudoku for having
one solution only, which is a generally preferred sudoku property. Also
included is a sudoku generator that supplies the single solution type
sudokus.
Changes: This release adds a Sudoku generator that produces single
solution sudokus. Although it is expected to run on Win32, support for
Windows has stopped due to a fatal crash of the author's Windows
partition.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat and mpstat,
commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. The sadf command may be used to display data collected by sar
in various formats (XML, database-friendly, etc.). The iostat command
reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The
mpstat command reports global and per-processor statistics. The
information collected by sar can be saved in a file in a binary format for
future inspection. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O transfer
rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts, network
activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization, kernel
activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP and SMP machines are
fully supported.
Changes: The S_TIME_DEF_TIME environment variable was added for sar, sadc,
and sadf. The sysconf() function is now used to get the number of clock
ticks per second (HZ value) instead of using the kernel include file
sys/param.h. The sysstat installation process was updated to use chkconfig
if available.

About: xjobs runs several jobs in parallel and limits the number of jobs
running at once so that every processor of the machine is busy, but not
overloaded. A batch of long-running processes invoked from the shell are
normally executed one after another, no matter how many processors are
available. xjobs allows batching those jobs while still keeping the
machine busy. The interface of xjobs is similar to that of xargs.
