Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[003] - ATutor 1.5.3
  by Greg Gay (http://freshmeat.net/users/greggy/)
  Sat, Jul 8th 2006 13:10

About: ATutor is a standards-compliant Web-based Learning Content
Management System (LCMS) designed with accessibility and adaptability in
mind. Administrators can install or update ATutor in minutes and customize
it with their own look and feel. Educators can quickly retrieve repository
content, assemble, package, and redistribute their own content, and
conduct their courses online. Students learn in an adaptive learning
environment.

Changes: ACollab group functionality was integrated into ATutor, creating
a new group user level. Collection group level tools were developed.
ACollab users can now configure ATutor to provide most of the
functionality ACollab had been providing. Another key feature is the File
Storage utility, a personal file manager for students, groups, and
instructors. It includes an Assignment Drop Box extension, where students
can submit assignments and instructors can manage them. As always,
features are accessible to assistive technology users.

About: JayOS is a live CD distro intended for use as a more secure mobile
environment. It integrates in-RAM filesystem encryption with plausible
deniability for a system that can be difficult to alter without
rebuilding. This offers a user with a high degree of data integrity; since

physical attacks. Features 2.6 kernel, unionfs, many network security and
filesystem tools, UML, and QEMU. It runs well on low-end x86 hardware, and
requires only 128MB RAM and a bootable CD drive to get started. There is
some PowerPC support. Also included is standard desktop software. It is
based on Linux From Scratch.

[016] - Memory Allocation Checker 0.2.1 (Stable)
  by Hal Duston (http://freshmeat.net/users/hald/)
  Sat, Jul 8th 2006 14:12

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: Memcheck provides the ability to fault on pointer overrun (read or
write) or freed pointer deference (read or write), logs double free and
realloc of already freed pointers and memory not freed on exit, checks for
pointer underrun on free and realloc, optionally reverses the behavior of
overrun and underrun, "churns" reallocations to always return a different
pointer, and logs pointer overruns instead of faulting. It has a very
small performance impact, with the tradeoff of a large memory footprint.
It includes a validation test suite to verify correctness of the library.
It is tested on a variety of architectures, including Alpha, ARM, HPPA,
PPC, ix86, IA64, rs6000, S390, SPARC, and SPARC64. It is tested on a
variety of platforms, including OSF, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Linux,
HP/UX, Mac OSX, AIX, SCO, and Solaris.

Changes: Some missing backtraces were fixed. An atexit replacement was
implemented to catch allocations that are freed by previously installed
atexit handlers. Deeper backtraces are stored, and internal recursions are
handled.

[017] - PulseAudio 0.9.2
  by Mezcalero (http://freshmeat.net/users/poettering/)
  Sat, Jul 8th 2006 14:15

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: PulseAudio is a sound server for Linux and other Unix-like
operating systems. It is intended to be an improved drop-in replacement
for the Enlightened Sound Daemon (esound or esd). In addition to the
features esound provides, PulseAudio has an extensible plugin
architecture, support for more than one sink per source, better
low-latency behavior, the ability to be embedded into other software, a
completely asynchronous C API, a simple command line interface for
reconfiguring the daemon while running, flexible and implicit sample type
conversion and resampling, and a "Zero-Copy" architecture.

Changes: The project was renamed to PulseAudio. The maximum number of
concurrent connections was increased. Latency interpolation was fixed.
Support for reverse endian sound cards was added. Support for recording in
padsp was added. The CPU load limiter was reenabled. Other bugfixes were
made.

[021] - Stickloader 0.4
  by Groer (http://freshmeat.net/users/groer/)
  Sat, Jul 8th 2006 14:08

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: Stickloader is an easy solution for copying music files from your
hard disk to your USB stick and re-encoding them at a lower bitrate for
more efficient usage of your MP3 player disk space. Single MP3 and WAV
files and whole directories can be easily dragged on the Stickloader
window (which always stays on top), and they are automatically re-encoded
using LAME and copied to your USB stick by using a temporary directory to
avoid blocking the encoding process.

Changes: A new dialog was created for encoding parameters. ID3 tags are
copied if MP3 files are re-encoded. A bug in which the progress bar was
only shown if progress was greater than 10% was fixed.

  Sat, Jul 8th 2006 13:02

Communications
Internet
Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups
to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables
software developers to create new communication tools with built-in
privacy features. It provides the foundation for a range of applications
that allow organizations and individuals to share information over
public networks without compromising their privacy. Individuals can use
it to keep remote Websites from tracking them and their family members.
They can also use it to connect to resources such as news sites or
instant messaging services that are blocked by their local Internet
service providers (ISPs).

Changes: This release fixes reachability testing for servers as well as
partial directory downloads. Servers should upgrade. Clients who have

  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Sat, Jul 8th 2006 03:59

About: XML_PullParser moves the API of the PHP XML facility from an
event-based model to a token-based model. Instead of processing data as it
is passed from the parser to callbacks, a script using PullParser requests
"tokens" from XML_PullParser_getToken() and a number of helper functions.
Tokens are arrays representing XML structures, which become available in
the order in which they appear in the document being parsed. Methods are
provided both to get tokens and to extract their data.

[026] - zsync 0.4.3
  by Colin Phipps (http://freshmeat.net/users/cph/)
  Sat, Jul 8th 2006 13:03

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: zsync is a implementation of rsync over HTTP. It allows updating of
files from a remote Web server without requiring a full download or a
special remote server application. It uses a metafile, which is created on
the server, to determine which parts of a file the user already has; it
then downloads the remaining parts via HTTP. No special server or Web
server module is needed. It also works with gzip files, and content on the
server can be compressed to further reduce download times.

Changes: HTTP basic auth support was added. The -s option was made more
effective.
